Faxanadu for the NES was a Falcom game? How did I not know this?
I came in here ready to say Ys book 1 and 2 for the TurboCD.
But I didn't know this. I wonder if I still have that game....

It's quite likely my first was Legacy of the Wizard, but I only noticed the Falcom name after playing Sorcerian that was put out by Sierra back in the day. I only knew of Ys from Gamepro magazine since I didn't have a Turbo CD.

Legacy of the Wizard was my first Falcom game too. I didn't realize it then but Falcom would later become a legend to me.

For me, growing up I never owned a NES myself untill much later, but I had a PC and was a big fan of the games of Sierra. Sierra had ported over a few gamearts games (thexder, silpheed, zeliard) and I played and enjoyed them all.. then I saw another game that they ported over called Sorcerian and was completely blown away. I still have the original box and manual, though sadly the 3.5 disks are useless.
Many years later I picked up a turbo duo and ys1&2 , and later Ys3. It wasn't until I played Ys3 that I made the connection and realized that it was developed by the same company.. ever since then though, I kept an eye out for the name Nihon Falcom and usually picked up a game based on that alone (Popful Mail for the segacd, faxanadu and Legacy of the Wizard for NES)

My first Falcom game was Ys... Ys Book I & II (but I think everyone is also fed up to be hearing this, everybody knows :x).

Ys 4: Mask of the Sun, lol. I'd heard of the Ys series before that through Parn uploading To Make the End of Battle up on synbios.net quite a while back (along with Grandia 2's battle theme, which made me a fan of that series too. Have to thank the guy for at least that much) but Mask was the first I actually played, using the original translation patch. I liked it quite a bit, but after that I kind of forgot about the series entirely except for occasional music hunts on Perfect Zero until I stumbled on news of Ys 6. Didn't have a clue how to go about importing it so settled on lurking nunuu's livejournal hoping she'd reupload some of the ogg files. Skip a few years later, and an older, wiser me stumbled upon Felghana while having another look for Ys 6 (which I ended up playing after Felghana in the end) which exceeded my expectations in just about every possible way, as has just about every Falcom game I've played since. You did post btw wyrdy, a page back

Wow, old threads rising from the dead... but I'm pretty sure I never posted in this one. First brush with Falcom for me was Ys III for the SNES. I randomly rented the game a couple of times because it seemed to be an RPG, which I was falling in love with at the time. I had no idea what the heck it was... nor did I realize it was related to my first more in-depth play of a Falcom game a few years later: Popful Mail. ..Y'know, the Sega CD one that Working Designs brought over here? MANY years later, with my acquisition of the internet, I started finding out about the company again via the music and all the glowing reviews it usually got, then I saw some art and went "HEY! I know this stuff!!" ......and erm, got hooked, yup.

Haha. A geezing old thread has arisen from its grave!
Dur, I can't even remember how I discovered Falcom. I think it was through some 'Net friend that squeed over Ys Eternal. Thing is, I can't remember the chronological order of whether or not I played THAT first or Ys IV: Mask of the Sun. >_>;
Regardless, it was around 1989 - 1990 where I'm PRETTY SURE I played my first Falcom game. XD After that, I was buying up all the Ys PC games that have come ut as well as a few others like Zwei!!, Gurumin, and The Rhapsody of Zephyr. Oh, and some random Falcom printed merchandise too.

If we're gonna be technical about these things, the first Falcom game I played was probably Legacy of the Wizard. I didn't make much progress in the game as a child, and I actually think I may have made less the last time I played it as an adult.
So, uh, the first Falcom game I played and liked was Ys III for SNES! And then I fell into the rest of the series years later as a result of nunuu's own squeeing inspired by another friend's squeeing!
It's kinda funny, Ys fandom seems to spread like a chain letter. Hey, try this series! It's fun! Now tell 8 friends to tell 8 friends!

Let's see.....
I do remember seeing screenshots of the older versions of Ys I back in the day. Those, along with THAT western boxart of Ys III for the Sega Genesis (I think I saw it on a 1992 issue of Gamepro with the Street Fighter II cover feature) took away any interest I could possibly have in checking out the Ys franchise.
However, somehow the name "Ys" got imprinted in my mind and made me go "it's that game from way back when" everytime I hear it ever since. But I never pronounced the title correctly until....
....a couple of years later, I accidentally stumbled upon Nightwolve's Ys Complete translation site, saw the screenshots, and BOOM!
I ended up checking Ys out, and from the moment I made that tree monster explode into bloody bits accompanied by one of my most favorite sound effects when killing things, I was hooked.
Strange as it seems, Ys Complete was the first Falcom game I've ever played. I think Popful Mail followed after that along with Wanderers from Ys for the Genesis.
It was like a chain reaction from there, and not even the fact that Japanese PC games are very expensive stopped me from shelling out all that dough.

The first time I've played a Falcom game is not that long ago. It was Ys 3 - 2 years ago iirc. Maybe because here in the EU they didn't really release that much back in the days. I started importing games like 10 years ago and heard of falcom from time to time, but I haven't bought something until I finally decided to play some Ys in 2006

My first falcom game was Wonderers from Ys3 for the snes when I was a little lad. My big brother rented it a long time ago and he couldn't beat galbalan. Eventually a couple of years later we bought the game off some fat guy across the street and the whole family loved it ever since.

I was always aware of Ys III back in the day, what with it being one of the early SNES games and thus always showing up repeatedly in Nintendo Power. I didn't actually play it until a few years ago. I thought it was kind of "eh." Weird movement and combat controls. Beat it in one sitting, traded it up, but later found myself thinking fondly of it. It was flawed, but had an odd charm, something that set it apart.
Rented Ys VI for PS2. At first I heard the English voice-acting and saw the horrifying CG cutscenes and thought "I... I can't do this." But I found the code to switch to Japanese VA/original anime cutscenes, and dodged that bullet. At first I was kind of "Hmmmm" about the game, but it had really grown on me by the end, and I went out and found a used copy.
Finally did something I'd been meaning to do for a while and imported Ys I+II Complete and Ys: Oath in Felghana. Awesome stuff. Grabbed Origin as well.
But just recently I looked over the Classic Gaming 101 article on Falcom, and realized that Ys III was NOT my first Falcom game. Way back, my friend down the street had Faxanadu and Legacy of the Wizard. We particularly played Legacy of the Wizard every now and then. In fact, I actually picked up used carts of both games a while back and still didn't even realize they were Falcom games.

Faxanadu isn't exactly a Falcom game though, as they had no part in the actual.... "making" of it. They just sold the license (the name, basically) to Hudson (who then made the game - by themselves). That's pretty much it.

Oh really? I cannot even think of any other "Hudson-Falcom" game, except Ys IV which only somewhat feels like a real Ys.
