As I understand it, there are two Dragon Slayer games on the Gameboy. One is just regular old Dragon Slayer, and the other is Dorasure Gaiden. I'd like to get a Dragon Slayer game for my Gameboy, but I'm not sure which one of these I should buy.
Does anybody know what Dorasure Gaiden is like? Is it better than regular Dragon Slayer? Do you need to know any Japanese to play it or is it straightforward like the first Dragon Slayer?

Acutally, Dorasure Gaiden is more like a Final Fantasy RPG. Beware of Dragon Slayer for GB, if you want to play the first game, play the one for Sega Saturn - the Game Boy version is awful. Dorasure Gaiden doesn't really releate to the "regular" Dragon Slayer games - hence the word "gaiden" (it means "side story" or "side quest" in japanese).
Anyway, if you want any of them, you can probably get ahold of the first one very easily, since it tends to be very common on the "32-in-1", etc. pirate carts. But of course, the original would be nicer, but harder to find. Get Falcom Classics for Sega Saturn and Dorasure Gaiden for Game Boy if you want to play both of them.

I actually happen to own Dragon Slayer: Dorasure Gaiden. I've only played it for about an hour, though. As Seldane says, it's more of a regular RPG than the original Dragon Slayer. I also have Falcon Classics. Haven't been able to play it yet, but both Dragon Slayer and Xanadu looks beautiful. So I agree - Falcom Classics seems to be a good choice!

Oh, I don't mind the graphics. They can't be too much worse than the PC-88 original, which is what I've been playing the past few days. I just think it's a fun game, sort of a mix of Ultima and Hydlide and Nethack/Rogue. I played the Falcom classics collection a long time ago, but at the time I was just a Ys fan so I didn't really bother with Xanadu and Dragon Slayer. I'll hunt it down again if I can find it for a fair price.
So if Dragon Slayer Dorasure Gaiden is a traditional RPG, I assume that means there's more dialog in it? Is there a lot of Japanese text in it?

No, there's not a lot of text in it, there's a lot of text in it. It starts out with a three-hour dialogue between some people.... Sort of. As for Falcom Classics, it may contain some interesting titles, but I assure you - it's not worth getting. If you already own a Saturn, you might as well get it, but it's not worth getting a Saturn just for this one. Dragon Slayer is very limited fun, Xanadu is hardly playable and the Ys remake, while being the best one of the three, it's a very very bad remake. Nowhere near Ys Eternal.

Hmm, I might just pass on both games, then. Neither sound like they're worth the effort and money of importing them.
Have you played the second Falcom collection? I forget what games are on that one other than Ys II. It seems harder to find than the first.

I forget what games are on that one other than Ys II. It seems harder to find than the first. You pass on these two - none of them are worth getting. As for Falcom Classics II, now that's something worth getting. It contains YsII and Asteka II~Taiyou-no-shinden. YsII is almost as bad as Falcom Classics I's YsI remake. It does not take advantage of the Saturn's hardware capabilities (the bosses are still as tiny as in the NES version, etc). But it does look good, overall. There are like three sound effects in the whole game. The music sounds moderately well, though - not as good as the TG-16 version, though. One cool feature is the videos - the animated anime-style videos are very nice looking, as well as it features voice acting for the most important characters (FC1 had nothing like this). The game also seems to make up for how bad the previous one was, since the extras features replays of the most important parts of YsI (from FC1), but with voice acting. It also features a video (anime) where you can see what happened in YsI. The second game is Asteka II - as Shadowgate-ish adventure game. It's good, but almost impossible to play unless you know Japanese. This is a must-play though, so I recommend you to get Tombs and treasure for NES - it's Asteka II - but released in America for NES. Get it for the music. Both Falcom Classics and Falcom Classics II were released in two different versions - regular and limited. The limited edition of FC1 included an interesting VCD with information about Falcom themselves, etc. The limited edition of FC2 included a music CD featuring the music out of YsII and Asteka II from the actual game. All that, nicely titled Falcom Classics II Music Colection. Yes, that's right - colection.

Huh, I had no idea Tombs & Treasures was a Falcom game. I'll pick this one up once I finish with Faxanadu.
I guess I'll just load an MSX emulator onto my GP32 and download some Dragonslayer and Xanadu ROMs for it. Much cheaper than buying the Gameboy cartridges.
