Seriously, why this remains one of Falcom's only older titles they haven't dipped back into boggles my mind.

Which version did you play? Keep in mind that Popful Mail for SFC (which is a remake by Falcom themselves) is significantly different from the other versions.
The Mega-CD version is also different from the PC-8801, PC-9801 and PC Engine versions. At least graphically (it does not feature different maps like the SFC version).

I have both the PC-Engine and Sega CD versions. The Sega CD version is awesome (I almost wonder if Westone had a hand in it, it's almost TOO similar to their Monster World games) but the PC-Engine has some kind of charm about it that still makes it appealing even if it's got kind of wonky gameplay in comparison. I'd really love to see a game like this on the DS. A company called Way Forward was making a game called Shantae for the GBA that seemed like it would've fit the bill but it seems to have disappeared. Edit: Actually it looks like it may be heading to both the DS and PSP at some point.. but the new looks old so I'm not counting on anything yet.. and they also mention trying to move it to 3D.. which would suck compared to the 2D screenshots they have posted all over their site. www.shantae.com/ |

Shantae is fun but it was hard for me to play for some reason even though it was, by formula, a game I should have been absolutely in love with. I think it had to do with how large the characters were and how small the screen was.. it felt cramped. I plan to give it another try at some point as long as my friend who has it didn't lose it.

I've only played the Sega-CD version. I loved that game and its humor though! Popful Mail kind of reminds me of Lina Inverse.
