Hi everyone!
I've been lurking about for a couple of days and decided this seems like a nice place to inhabit, so here I am, all signed up.
Ys is slowly saving this jaded gamer... read on!
I'm almost a complete Falcom newbie. Way back in the dim past I remember a friend playing Ys on his Master System, but all I saw of it was the very beginning and funnily enough the end fight. I certainly couldn't afford the £40 for the game myself so it passed me by at that time.
It didn't help then that the series disappeared completely from UK shores after that. I happily ploughed through the Megadrive, SNES, the 32-bits, and onto the current gen of consoles and finally a decent gaming PC. I knew there were Ys games out there but I just never got round to visiting them.
Now 30 years old and getting somewhat tired of gaming in general. Fed up with bloated, random-encounter filled RPGs and yearning for something simpler and just plain fun.
Well, the thing that finally brought me to the Ys games was the music. I'm a big fan of VGM but ironically didn't know much at all about Falcom and the JDK Band - I just always went after the stuff I knew. However, reading sites like Chudah's Corner and Hardcore Gaming 101 on Classic Gaming got my interest up in this legendary music beloved by fans everywhere. A few downloads later and I was sold. A few visits to ebay later and I was forever smitten. The Perfect Collections of Ys 1, 2 and 3 cemented their places at the top of my all-time favourite game music (and to think I never expected there to be anything out there to match FFVII, Final Fantasy Tactics, Soukaigi, etc.)
I love it when you happen upon something new that swiftly becomes a firm favourite. How did I ever live without it?
So of course I had to seek out the games.
Ys on the Master System was an obvious start point... but... it's just a little too archaic for me now. Eternal thanks to Nightwolfe then for his work on Ys I and II Complete! I've had such fun with Ys I. It's almost everything I've been looking for in a game. Big, but not monstrously so (no padding out). A nice simple, quick combat system, lovely crisp visuals (I'm a big fan of nice 2D pixelart), and most of all a wonderful soundtrack.
I've since got myself Oath in Felghana and Ark of Napishtim, but I'm not going to play them until I've beaten I and II (I'm just up to Darm Tower in I).
For a long time I've been stumbling around the gaming wasteland looking for something fresh and fun, something that I can play for minutes or hours.
Time to hit the 'bay for those PC Engine versions!
Ys has come along and given me a new enthusiasm for gaming
