It seem like ages since I've watch any good anime and "no" i do not consider yu-gi-oh as good anime. They seem to just make it up as they go along. -.-

Try some 80s anime like Gunbuster or Macross.
Those kind of shows bring me back to my sanity^^

Honayori Dango (aka Boys Over Flowers, like a soap opera, but highly addicting!)
There's also the hilarious Kodomo No Omocha. (aka Kodocha in English over here in the U.S.). These aren't action oriented, but they awesome shows.
Kodomo doesn't really sound like what you're looking for, but it really is funny.
Honayori Dango is a pretty serious High School drama. I recommend these because they are different, and not like some of the more popular animes out there.

GitS: Stand Alone Complex. I'm doing my second run of the first season, it's really good.

I gotta say, I AM really enjoying Naruto. I wasn't at first sure what to expect. But I was pleasantly surprised. Samurai Champloo rocks. Personally, I usually pretty late on anime, as I wait to hear lot's of things about particular shows. So, basically, I got into shows like Trigun, waaaaaay after it being localized.

There's always FullMetal Alchemist, which actually turned out to be a pretty good series.

I suggest finding Samurai 7 if you haven't already done so. If you don't mind the tampering done with Kurosawa's original Seven Samurai, you'll enjoy it.

I've seen a few eps of Samurai Seven, and it seems quite good. And let's face it, we all need to see samurai kick ass from time to time. We had the Inquisitions and Imperialism due to a lack of this.
Also: I like Visions of Escaflowne. =(

Wyrdwad -- how about editing the first post (and the topic) so that it makes sense? I don't know what to write myself, so I won't touch it.
