Seems like a friendly, close-knit group of Ys / Falcom fans here as I've observed by lurking around for a few days.
My display-name...well, I'm from Wisconsin, and some seem to like calling us 'cheeseheads' here...'Ys' and 'cheese'...close enough in rhyme. ^_^
To be honest, I have only scratched the surface of Ys when it comes to gaming. Blame it on my not persuing other consoles beyond the NES / SNES when those were the big thing. Ys 1 and 2 were only on the Turbografix 16 CD add-on (too expensive at the time), and I do not own a PS2 (I sort of got out of console gaming in the late 1990s..my 'fun money' goes to computer-related stuff and anime nowadays) to get the newest title, Ys VI.
My only exposure game-wise to this great series (so far), has been with the seemingly loathed SNES port of Ys III - Wanderers from Ys. Back in 1992 when I rented it the first time, I still vivdly recall being drawn into the story the moment I hit 'Start' and 'Opening Title 1' BGM faded in with the first cutscene. Looks very dated now, and is definitly not the quality to the anime cinemas of the PC-Engine/TG-16 version, but for the time, it was neat to see.
I'm sure for many, this was a jumping-off point.
Oh, and the music too...good stuff. Ys' music literally rocks. Been thinking of putting it to CD once time allows me.
For the record, when the same video rental store I rented Ys III from was selling off older rental inventory and the game was among them, I bought it. Still have it yet too.
I've played a couple other Falcom titles that were ported under other names here, but I'll save those for the appropriate forums.
I'm also into anime, so I was quite suprised when Media Blasters announced the licensing of the Ys I and Ys II OAV series back in 2001 (which really, I never thought would happen because I knew Ys just was not popular here in the U.S.) I got these as they were released. Just rewatched those recently as well. Here's hoping the forthcoming (or so I've read through the forums here) anime series is also licensed and released here.
Call me a newbie if you wish...I still feel like it, having only scratched the surface with Ys and Falcom's other works. Hopefully being around here will lead me to discover what else is out there that I have missed, and also to learn more about those games that I have played from the studio.
