People are getting annoyed by guests posting here. Some guests also come here to spam (there have been several guest posting ads here - for example).
What do you think? Should guests be able to post here at Ancient land of Ys? Or should they be able to post in a certain board? Perhaps a board specifically for guests? Or should they be able to post in the Ys boards but not the others? Any suggestions?

They should be able to read, but not post. I mean, what's so hard about registering? This is actually the only board I come to that allows guests to register. I vote for no guest posts.

I think a few boards should be allowed.
Here're a few thoughts:
Current situation: No reg require... anyone can post, literally, idiotic comments
Reg a must: you'll get 70% of registered member with ONE post and never come back
Selected boards to be open: The Official stuff, The Marketplace and the Archive should be viewable and postable for guests.
Official - this is where guess should be able to read and post general questions about the board. You may even consider adding one section just for guests.
The Marketplace - because there are people here just selling stuff or want to buy stuff and not talk about the game.
Archive - old stuff that no one HERE reads... so, they can read but not reply OR start a topic there.
I think everything else should be members only.
I would also suggest that the download section requirement should be raised to 50. Or even to an undetermined amount based on posts comments/behaviour. I think I've seen people say "Ok, I've made 25 posts!! Can I have the password?" thing. To have an undetermined amount that will encourage good behaviour. How 'bout 25 post and email the download guy for behaviour checking? That way just because you have 25 post, it does not guarentee access.

Those are some good points - but do you mean guests shouldn't even be able to view topics? There are many lurkers, and I think it's important to let guests be able to read everything, but maybe not post everywhere.

Which are you talking about? They should only be able to view the boards I mentioned.
It's really up to you. I think it's ok to let people read it and not post it (the Ys section). The decision is yours...

see the problem with not allowing guest to post at all is that there are a select few that will register just for the soul fact to advertize or to spam. Thus the user count is really null and its a pain. Ive admin at 3 boards in the last five years and I found that having one or two boards for guests is great. one being the "minea town" and possibly the Ys general board...some people probably just want to come here to make a comment about the series but dont want to go as far as to register. Personally if you come to this board (which is totally themed around one entity) you should really only have Ys in intrest. I mean we have the other gameing boards and entertainment bla bloa bhla...but this is for Ys mostly, and for the fans. I think we should all remember that we were all guests once, and we really want to entice more fans to come here so lets make the guests feel welcome. k...im done ranting lol!

I vote yes. My first few posts here were simply to share some links for remixes. I found it quite handy to simply post them up without having to bother with registering. I registered later when I felt that I would be coming here often enough to make registering worthwhile. I might not have stayed had I been required to register.

I don't mind having random guests posting couple of times, but when finding someone posting on regular bases, it gets annoying from that point. So, let all the boards be open for guests and just delete guest posts that are pure spam/advertising and ban guests by their IP when they're found posting on regular bases AND not registering when asked. Just suggesting. That's more or less exacly as it is already. Sort of. But I like the idea. Personally, I think it's a good feature.. But I wanted to know what you all think. Discuss this further and I'll see what I'll do about this. |

I havn't been here that long but here is my opinion. I didn't mind registering whatsoever, i found this place to be rather intresting and i learned about the Y games upon coming to this forum. Personaly i think that guests should not be able to post unless they register. Letting them read the posts is ok but if they have no real intrest in this place or the games then they are not fans, in my opinion this place was created for the fans of the games i registered and found out about the games and instantly became a fan lol. I don't know if that counts but im just gona say it does lol. But yea i say they should register if they want to reply to our posts, i only see a few of you and i consider you all friends already simply because we can talk and such. But yea that is my two cents about this topic it may seem cruel to the guests for some people but i guess its really all on what people think is right and wrong.

no. anonymous posts always bring down the quality of forums (from what i've seen).
if this board ever got really popular and guests were still allowed to post, there would likely be a dramatic decline in standards.

I say 'yes.' Ban the spammers without warning, first of all. You already limit access to the downloads, so that alone should tone down BS Guest requests (I would hope.) With those taken care of, what's the harm, really?

Well Seldane-san, this is how I feel about the matter, hehe...*places his hands on top of one another, putting his "serious" look on*  . Alright..now I'm ready XD. Well..I feel as if guests should be allowed to view topics, well..any topics for that matter. I believe that if they see something that they would like to discuss, then they should be required to register. I mean...how would this person benefit from just visiting such a wonderful site and trying to get involved with the fellow members of Ancient Land of Ys as a guest? Why not become a Newcomer, then an Esterian, etc. ? I used to be a guest too at one point in time. I looked through all the different threads...liked what I saw...noticed becoming a member was free, so I was like, "Hey =O!" and I signed up faster than the swing of Adol's sword (after Ys I and II of course  ). I just honestly think that if guests find such an interest here, don't come every now and then..post something here and there, and have nobody know who you are or anything like that..become a member! Become involved with something you take an interest in! Overall, I feel as if you should NOT make a new board just for guests. If they wish to visit your site and post remarks/opinions about topics, then so be it..but do not let them take advantage of this wonderful site by making them think you are doing them a favor and they shouldn't have to join..if you were to create a "guests" board. The whole purpose of becoming a member is to have your own avatar, a little title below your avatar, the post count system of becoming different titles, a signature, I mean..I just don't think guests should feel almost the same privelege as we do when we post to each other, with them just missing the avatar and everything else I posted about earlier about the benefits of becoming a member. So..with this last statement, I respect whichever choice you feel is the best in this matter Seldane-san, but as I have voted "no" with 6 other people so far..I feel as if guests should not have the same privelege as members here. As I said before..if they find an interest and they wish to discuss about it, then just how hard would it be to register? It's fast, it's free, and you become involved with having friends within this wonderful Ys community. With that being said..to our future members...welcome to the neighborhood  |

I will allow them to see most - if not all - posts. I personally hate boards that doesn't allow this, since they seem incredibly uninteresting.
