If you don't use Vista, it's easier than it sounds. xD And the soundtrack gets so much better in-game.

If you don't use Vista, it's easier than it sounds. xD Yeah.. see that's the problem. xD I think my parents still have an old computer running Windows 95 stacked away somewhere at their house. But I don't want to get my hopes up.

Oh, wow, you're screwed then. XD
I heard you can try running Windows 98 using a VirtualPC software, and that way you wouldn't even have to use DOSBox since you'd have access to a genuine DOS.
I didn't try this since I didn't have to, but I guess if you do some research about it, maybe you can run it that way.

I will definitely look into that if I have to.

Ryo Yonemitsu, I, made this game. With DOS and a keyboard facing. While vacation in Korean. That is why only in Korean you can buy...

I made Falcom, I made the world, I am the creator of Ys. And I never hired anybody named Ryo Yonemitsu. You, Mr. Dood, are an impostor!

Okay, so I've been scouring many different Korean sites this evening for Falcom stuff to see what all I could dig up and I manged to find two things that might be of interest, that is if they haven't already been posted before: A) Ys 2 Special Manual/Guide?Just a text file I found on someone's site that seems to be a guide in Korean with ascii maps? possibly? Not sure how helpful that may be, but if it makes sense to those who have played it, maybe it could be useful later on for anyone that would want to work on an English FAQ for the game. B) Ys 2 Special Patch A patch for Ys 2 Special? I never noticed this before. Wonder what it does? Think it makes the game a bit more stable with less chances of it crashing perhaps? That'd be nice! Maybe it's that elusive patch that Red mentioned in the previous page that adds voices to the game.

Hmm, who knows. That would be cool if it was the one in the same, but I'm just hoping it makes the game more stable. That would make it completely worth it!
I'm not at my PC or I'd try it. Then again, I think I've lost the original file for it too, so I'd probably need to find that again first! : 0

Search this thread and you'll find the game. You can also download it through Hardcore Gaming 101.

First of all, independently, thanks Skye. Well, about that Walkthrough, actually there has been one (probably that one) that has already been posted here (or maybe Seldane just showed it to me back then, I'm not sure). Anyway, it might be handy in the future. Thanks. As for that patch, it pretty much likely isn't the voice-acting patch. (I hope it is though... I also can't test it either right now.) Ys II Special had several bug fixes patches. The very first version of Ys II Special even prevented you from entering the game's last dungeon. xD Though as Seldane once mentioned in his Ys II Special article, most of those patches fixed some bugs, but also created new ones. xD Though, don't worry: the game already is fully playable as it is: many of the bugs actually happen because of the emulators, and even using i.e. DOSBox, you can still bypass them all. Still, thanks for the link. Also, you two should play it! xD I'm saving my serious playthrough for that game for last. I still have many Ys games to finish.

Thanks I managed to find it with your help.
So, upon reinstalling dos-box with d-fend and getting it to link to the install file and the YS2.exe file, the game launched fine with the original YS2.exe file. However, upon overwriting that YS2.exe file with the one that was found in the patch file, (which is bigger in file size by just a bit) it provides a different checksum for the game and the game doesn't launch. However, the game still launched fine after overwriting all the other files other than the YS2.exe file.
Just wanted to give a heads up in case someone else has problems getting it to work after installing that patch.

I see.
By the way, if I recall correctly, d-fend isn't actually required. Just a detail. xD

Yeah, kind of a shame really. I was hoping for well... more than a simple crash. : )
But yeah, one day I'll go through it, though I'd prefer to wait until there is a nice FAQ available for the game. Seems like there is a ton of information here, but I thought I passed some posts and such where people seemed to be permanently stuck or screwed because of some action they did in the game. I want to make sure that my chances of that are slim to none when I finally get ready for a playthrough. : )
I am hoping that this Ys II Special translation project might take off again. That would be amazing! And hey, anything is possible. If the folks over at BS Zelda can fix up a broken dump of a Satellaview only Zelda 3 sequel over time, ANYTHING is possible.
That rom dump of Inishie no Sekiban (Kodai no Sekiban is what they call it... but they are reading the kanji wrong) was so messed up and corrupted, it was amazing they got as far as they did!

Actually, Zelda 4 is a sequel to Zelda 3. xD It's the GB/GBC game "Link's Awakening", though you probably knew that. But yeah, anything is possible. But the main problem about this one project is that we don't know anyone who can hack a DOS game. By the way, there's no way you will get stuck in Ys II Special without being able to turn back or whatever: Hide N' Seek, for example, has finished it by himself, also by taking peeks in this thread, and he did so absurbly fast. If you get stuck anywhere, we will help you, especially him. Seldane also got to the final dungeon, but he didn't feel like playing it to the end, even though he was near.

So I decided to take the plunge on this game, despite the technical headaches it may give me. So far it's run surprisingly well, but I have a couple of questions:
How I do use items? I got the secret book that lets you save anywhere, but I'm not sure how to use it. I go to it in the item screen, and press alt, which I guess means I equipped, but then I'm not sure what button to push to actually use it. Pressing space makes some kind of noise, but doesn't use the item.
Also, I've managed to find the first dungeon, but I'm wondering if I'm just supposed to go in there with a sword and no items, or is there a way to get some stuff beforehand?
Thanks.

For your first question, some inventory items are used automatically.
The Save option couldn't be highlighted before, but now it can. As for the dungeon, I'm not sure, but I'm sure you can go there just as how you start. Just play carefully. xD
And don't forget to save a lot.

Um, I don't think I've found any save option. Is it in one of the menus? I was just saving at inns. And just to clarify... When I get a usable items like herbs, to I equip it with tab, then use it with space?

I don't remember that much, sorry. xD
Also, yeah, you can save using one of the F keys. I think there is also that typical Ys menu on the top left corner of the screen you can bring up.
