In Febuary's issue of Electronic Gaming Month (US edition, I think). They list the greatest games... (I'm just listing TG-16 games)
#191: Devil's Crush 1990 #163: Military Madness 1989 #156: Legendary Axe 1989 #153: Ys I & II 1990 #59: Bomberman 1993 - the arcade version #42: R-Type 1987 - the arcade version (there was an arcade version??) #28: Galaga 1981 - arcade version (that was a fun game)
Just in case you're interested... #1 is Super Mario Bro. for NES in 1985

Yeah, R-type came out in the arcades first. Then was released on the PC Engine, on 2 seperate cartridges, but came out over in NA as one cart, then later they made the R-type Complete CD, which was cool, but they could've added more to it. Hmm, it says Bomberman 1993, & there was a game for Turbo called Bomberman 93, but yet they say the arcade version? The only arcade Bomberman I know of, is Bomberman World, which came out later for the PSX. Ofcoarse, Galaga 1981 isn't the same game that was released on the Turbo(Galaga 90)......which I happen to enjoy more, then the original There should be alot more Turbo games on there, like Bonk & Ninja Spirit. Super Mario Bros. the best game? Not IMHO, I think they're looking at it from the point of view of how these games were for their time. I look at them, as to how they stand up now, as there's more 2d games that I love, then 3d

If they would list their "current favorite games" they would only list newer games and ignore ultra classics like Tetris, SMB, etc because they don't look as good. Personally, I don't enjoy any new game as much as older ones. If I would make a similiar list, not a single new game would be in it.

Shadow of the Colossus is on there. I think it's around the 100 mark or something.
The problem with lists are that the creators are always biased. If they enjoyed a certain genre, you'll most likely see THAT genre on the list more then other. I was actually quite surprise to see Ys on the list. Considering not a lot of people may remember the game. Most people give you a "What?" answer.

For the most part I agreed with the whole thing...although I thought Castlevania:SOTN should have been above metal gear solid.

I personally rate game on how they stand up today. But I base how good games are, on the system, & what that system was capable of. I suppose it's sort of a confusing round about way, but, there's games that came out for the NES or even the 2600, that I also put up with games that came out on PS2, DS, etc.
And yeah, Galaga 88 was the original title, including what it was called on the PC Engine, but when they brought it over to the States on the Turbo Grafx, they renamed it 90 since it came out around 89-90.

Are you sure SOTN was a bigger hit? It seems more like a cult thing, I mean, most people go nuts over any MGS game, while it seems a smaller fraction go nuts over CV games. Just an observation, I personally haven't played thru SOTN yet, but, I'm sure I'd enjoy it like the rest of the Metroivania's.

SOTN wasn't a big success. It was a flop. Especially in Europe. It got its attention a couple of years after its release. That's why it's so expensive -- nobody bought it back then.

It wasn't a really good game either IMHO. Uninteresting plot, bad voice-acting, too easy difficulty level and awkward equip menu made it being far from perfect.Totally disagree with you SOTN has to be the best CV games thier is. I will admit it wasnt the hardest game, but i like how your Alucard instead of a belmont.

The voice acting is terrible, no doubt! But, if it flopped, I know the US got a Greatest Hits version, it couldn't of flopped too badly?

It didnt really flop....video game mags and sites didnt really make a big deal out of it. I thought the voice acting was kinda bad as well, but the japanese version wasnt that bad. The whole dracula X sidestory rules...and I am really sad to hear such bad feedback on SOTN.

Don't worry, SOTN is the best game I have ever played. Yes, I even think it's better than Ys! ....I don't like it as much as Ys, though.

Hey now, I enjoy Harmony of Dissonance, so, I'm sure SOTN is wonderful. I gotta say, for now, I LOVE Dawn of Sorrow, I wish I had a copy of SOTN, I do have a "burn" of the Saturn version, but it'd be nice to have the real thing

If you have a copy (one way or the other) of the saturn version of SOTN, then don't bother getting the PSX version, unless you want to play it in english. The differences are you get to choose between three characters instead of unlocking one of them (Maria isn't playable in the PSX version). And, the saturn version has two more areas; The Underground Garden (with a boss character in that area only) and The Cursed Prison (worthless areas, but still interesting to chek out) and there's also a boss fight between Alucard & Maria (in Alucard's storyline). The only downfall of the saturn version, Very SLOOOOOOOWWW loading times. Still worth finding though.

And don't forget -- when playing with Richter or Maria in the Saturn version -- all the adventure elements are removed. No stats. No items. No equipment. No "searching." Just plain action -- like in the earlier Castlevania games. Awesome.
