Oh wow, I'd have to say Symphony of the Night is an easy top 10 contender! Lousy voice acting? Yes. Lame story? Yes. Fun beyond fun? YES!
Good to see some TG-16 games on the list, although I would certainly add Lords of Thunder and Beyond Shadowgate as well.
And yes, Shadow of the Colossus. That and Final Fantasy X are the only real great games I've played in this current decade.
I hope Xenogears is number 1, but probably not.

SOTN wasn't a big success. It was a flop. Especially in Europe. It got its attention a couple of years after its release. That's why it's so expensive -- nobody bought it back then. It wasn't a really good game either IMHO. Uninteresting plot, bad voice-acting, too easy difficulty level and awkward equip menu made it being far from perfect.nothing matters more than fun factor. and so far, castlevania SoTN is not only the most fun and exciting castlevania yet, but its the most fun game on PSone. if you're constantly looking for story and plot, you'll miss out. it wasnt perfect, but i never enjoyed playing a game more than this on the PSone. and besides, no game is ever realy perfect. but as a game, i realy wouldnt say this was far from it. i actualy think a lot of the story-heavy popular games need to learn a lot from games like SotN and other 2D games. what you're doing most in a game, especialy an action one, is battling or taking part in some kinda gameplay. and thankfully in SotN, its always fun and always accompanied by awesome music and beutiful artwork. i actualy felt more immersed in it than any FF or MGS due to these things. it may have been an easy game for a lot of people, but isnt Ys mostly easy too, as as well as simplistic? i actualy have to say that Ys and castlevania are two series that i love for a lot of the same reasons. coming to this board, i knew i would find more castlevania fans here too. btw, what was wrong with the equip menu? i dont recall any problems with it. and im not saying you're wrong in your opinion or anything, i just thought id express mine too heh, and i for one loved the voice acting... especialy the english ones "have at you!" i was actualy surprised the first time i read that many people hated the voice acting. the voices seemed to fit each character well. but even still, nearly all the reviews for the game were admirable. it took 2D to a new level when many had started to beleive it would die out. its a total classic, and it even hit the million mark, it should realy always be high up on the all time best charts. although, i know ive seen other lists where it gets a higher rank. and, the GBA and DS castlevania did improve on the SotN idea in many ways, but i can never agree that they beat SotN in gameplay. the battling, weapon usage, magic spells, familliars, and transformations of SotN still have yet to be beat for me. I love all the gameplay ideas of the newer ones, but they just arent as fun for me. and i beleive that i had played CotM before getting my hands on SotN. *wonders if if anyone noticed i deffended SotN without mentioning the fan-fave alucard even once*
