What is holding the game back from being published in the states? I've heard it has to do with some other company owning the rights to Ys 1 and 2. Is this true can someone elaborate on this mysterious issue. I would love to see them stateside

The company behind the port went bankrupt - or rather - the division. Digicube is (was) a part of Square Enix and now they don't exist anymore. Besides, Sony has already said no. Most likely because it's a pretty unknown 2D RPG. I see no possibilities whatsoever that it would be released outside of Japan. But then again, thanks to the person who posted above you, the PC versions are translated into english.

I honestly thinks that's the lamest thing I've ever read in my life.
If I'm reading the thread correctly.... Ys: Eternal Story was not allowed to come to north america because Sony doesn't like it. Sony doesn't like it BECAUSE it's a 2D game?
Now, having said that, why is Ys6 out? Is it because Konami did it? Added some 3D cinamatic?
I would not mind having Konami do ALL the remakes for the north american release... providing like Ys6, they keep the original state. And if they like, they can add their own little games within the game, a la Alma's Trial.
Do I have the "theory" right regarding not releasing Ys: Eternal Story and Ys: Ark of Napishtim?
Cause I think Konami did a great job on it.... the only real compain i have is not the stubby Adol... but you know, you get use to it and the animation of Adol's movement is cool (although cinematic needs a lot of work)

One other problem with the new Ys game that is frusterating is how adol jumps i hate the dash jump or what ever it is because have tried but i still can't pull it off. My room mate also has problems with that if konami makes another Ys game similar to the same design they should just make adol double jump similar to maximo. Push X twice thats it that would nice to see.. What do all you people think about Jumping on Ys 6? Did any of you guys also suffer the same fate?

Sony doesn't like it BECAUSE it's a 2D game? Not sure if you live in the US or not, but this is common practice for Sony of America. They don't allow old school games to released if they are not part of a pack. The other notable block Sony made was blocking all of the Sega Ages remakes, until Conspiracy/Sega agreed to package them together. Sony can't strong arm the bigger developers, unless they want them to take games like Metal Gear Solid to Xbox and Gamecube.

i'm in canada.... so, the "american version" I've had my ps2 for over a year so.... i never really read about the previous problems... i think that's a shame that they are not releasing it here... which would explain why they're really stupid could we complain to sony or konami?? lol

I've got a good example.
How about Castlevania: Simphony of the Night?

Let's also be honest and say that 2d games recently haven't been the hotbeds of innovation, hell most of them are running either in low res, with very limited animation. I love 2-d as much as the next guy but many of the 2d remakes could have easily been done on the PS1.
I wish Sony would have aq more open policy, but even if they did I just don't see 2d being the force it was. And its gonna stay that way until someone really raises the bar on what is possible in 2d. I mean hell, SF3 has reviewers talking about how pretty it is and that game is what, eight years old by now? Imagine if I side scroller or rpg used that kind of detail for its characters, or at least close to it.
Rambling now so I'll let this be,.

Yeah. In SF2 they had ~4 frames of animation for Ryu's fireball. In SF3 they had ~20. It's all an animation thing. When I saw it for the first time I was awestruck. It's not that impressive now though, at least not for its animation. I'm much more impressed by the engine. The combos you can achieve in that game are insane. When I was in Japan I was fighting a Makoto player and she literally juggled me from about 80% health to dead.

Ok, I get what everybodys trying to say here and I agree, but there's one thing that just doesn't add up for me...
If all this is true, then why would Konami even bother to release Ys 6 in the states?
Yes it has 3d grafx, but its nothing spectacular, nothing ground breaking... plus the game engine seems totally retro, nothing new there either...
Yet, for some reason Konami spent the time and money translating and dubbing this installment of a pretty obscure game series. A series that hasn't seen a US release in over 10 years... Not only that, but a game that constantly references the previous games, some of which have never been officially translated into english!
I admit, Ys 6 can obviously be played and enjoyed without having any knowledge of the earlier games, but I can just see people sitting in front of thier PS2's going.... "Tower of Darm? Eldeen? Felgana? Selceta? ....what the hell are these people talking about?"
It doesn't really make any sense for them to have brought Ys6 over....
Not that I'm complaining mind...

Yes (I typed Ys there first. He heh) and no. In YsI, you can ONLY defeat enemies that way, in YsII and IV, there's magic that does the job. But of course, you can push the enemies in those games too. YsIII, V and VI does not use this battle system.
