I've been wondering for a while if it would be possible to hack into the code of the PS2 versions of these Ys games coming out, and translating them. I personally have the Ys Eternal collection for PS2, but although I know the stories inside and out already, it's a bother to play through without really knowing what's going on.
So that's really the question. Is the encryption, or the data compression too good to crack into and change? I know people have already done things with Xbox games, but that's no big thing, since the system is pretty basic to begin with, just being FATX file tabling and such.
I know that you can pull the data from the games to a hard disk with HDLoader, much like an Xbox hard drive, but what about patching the games themselves?
I know that Deuce has some connections in terms of rom patchers, do you feel like asking them if it would be possible to do the same with a PS2 game? I'd happily contribute in any way I could to be able to play the new versions in English.

That's funny.. I have been thinking about the same thing. It would be nice to be able to find a way to patch the PS2 versions as well.
Yet I think it might be harder than the PC versions? Hopefully the new Ys 7 will come to the US and we won't have to translate it. Anything is possible!

Makes sense. I don't suppose anyone would want to really, given you can get a PC version hacked much more easily, and can just use a PS>PC controller converter.

Wow, so funny a thread like this ended up here, I remember i tried googling to see if I could find something like that. And you can all imagine how that turned out ....Well, I'm still trying to look for it again and post it, but i did land on a page where aguy put the idea up and had it all planned out, til' other members(?) started bombing him with copyright infringement and violating regional coding restrictions, so I don'y know if that will ever happen. They also added that by the time that person could even get a working version out, PS3 might come along and he would never really "profit" from his hard work. So, I'll still look for it and hopefully post it in the future when I have time...^_^

It would be pretty hard because you'll either need to mod the PS2 to play modified PS2 discs or being able to produce discs playable on a PS2.
It's not as easy as compared to say a PC program.
If the PS2 had a HDD then it could be possible.

PS2 can use a HDD though. There's a mod for it called HDLoader that has HD functionality similar to an Xbox.

HDAdvance is the current one called. It's a boot disc that lets you play PS2 games from the harddrive (when used together with a network adapter). There's also a new version of HDAdvance called USBeXtreme, that lets you use external USB HDDs, ideal for the new v12 PS2 (the slim one), but it works just as well with the older models.

Unless you make it on PC, but playable on the PS2. Emulation may be possible but I don't think translation patches would work. You never know tho.

That's only halfway true. HDloader is still around (and thriving), just not as a retail product. Most people boot it up directly from a memory card exploit. HDLoader is off the market since Sony sued the company behind it. HDAdvance is a hacked (and improved) version of HDLoader. That's why I said "HDLoader is no more".
