I've never played a Ys game before (I didn't even know about the series until I saw some pictures and a video on IGN).
However, I'm a big fan of games like the 2-d Zelda, Secret of Mana and Aludra.
I'm planning on getting the upcoming Ys game for the PS2, but I just wanted to get some opinions from people who are big fans of the series, on how much I would like it (based on the games I mentioned above).

Well, first of all, Ys is nothing like Zelda, but Ys VI is somewhat similiar to Secret of Mana. I haven't played Alundra (even though I have borrowed the game!), so I can't comment on that.
It's an action RPG - No adventure game elements like puzzle solving, etc.

Cool.
I think I'm going to give the game a shot (renting it from Gamefly when it gets released).
When I made the comparasion to the older Zelda games, I was talking about the battle system (how you have control of Link (or Adol) instead of a turn- based.
Seldane, Aludra is another game which features a real-time battle system (its not bad either, playing it right now).

Well, you're in for quite a treat I must say ....Ys is the best game series ever.....and it is alot better than Zelda and Final Fantasy (I know people will disagree, but they dont know jack) .....If you have never played Ys book I and II for the Turbo Grafx CD system I would recommend you purchase the game from Ebay and play it on an emulator such as Magic Engine, then you will know what a real RPG is.... however I do love Zelda games.

I finally found a copy of the OPM with the Ys demo and I totally loved the game.
I'm defintly picking it up (and thanking Konami for releasing it over here, they created a new fan of the series).

I'm not sure how you'd like Ys if you're expecting a TRADITIONAL action/rpg. The battle "system" is actually more like jousting in most of the games.

Oh, I have thought about so many different fighting techniques and possible battle engines/forms/way of fighting I don't know what it's called at the moment. But while listening to some perfect collections and some Guilty Gear OST's, I came up with a battle system(!) that allows you to fight utilizing the right analog stick as the attack method (just like Rise to Honor w/ Jet Li, If anybody's ever played the game). Picture this, as I did in my head: Adol is in a fight with four things (creatures, monsters, etc. etc. etc.) and he attacks the front one by pushing the R Analog stick up, then the one behind him comes to attack, press R1 to use shield and hold off the front one, push R analog stick back as thing is about to attack (parrying the move hence Street Fighter 3rd Strike battle system), then attacking it again, making combat more in-depth, not aggravating but fun! Then just let your mind make up more scenarios....Another one is he is surrounded on all sides, swing around the R analog stick and he'll a swirl type of attack (like Link does in Zelda if you charge his sword) which drains a bit of MP. I have so many ideas but not enough time to actually work on them. ^_^

I believe the game you're thinking of is Smash TV.
