ANCIENT Ys LEGACY: CRIMSON TEARS
©2004 ANCIENT LAND OF Ys
An all-new chapter in the Ys-series.
This is the new Ys project that I have been working on since july, the game is nowhere near finished. I'm not even sure if I will finish this project. Of course I want to, but we'll see in the future. It's for certain that it'll be a while before this can be considered a "real" game though.
(Note: My guess is around autumn/winter 2005, but it may be later. Or earlier. We'll see)
Anyway, I have been writing a bit on the story, for now, it's more like a thought, I like writing stories so chances are that I'll make a new one or at least change this one a bit. I will not reveal the plotline plans though, since that'd spoil the gameplay. It's not much to tell anyway, since I haven't really been thinking of that so much right now.
At this moment, I have only been working on the engine, and I haven't thought of the game design at all, it's too early for that. I have made a few test areas that won't show up in the actual game of course. They're not really that good looking. I have been working with level design a lot before, so the design of the game will not be a problem, and as soon as I finish the engine, I will progress in the development really quickly. That is for sure.
Well, about the game, the engine is still under development, but I have added a few functions, and the game is "playable". I'm a bit puzzled with the fighting system though, I'm not sure if I'll use the early Ys fighting system, you know, when you crash into enemies to hurt them, or if I should use the YsV+ fighting system, when you swing your sword. I'll need your opinions on this. Either way, I'd say the later system would be easier to make, I'm not really sure how I would make a good functioning "crash" fight system. At the moment, I am, however, using the "crash"-fighing. You can't get hurt by enemies because of that, though.
The engine is called Esteria Engine. I think it sounds good and it's obviously Ys-releated. I'd like to call the game version 0.010 - but I can't tell for sure since I don't know how long the game will be.
First, I was using Ys COMPLETE graphics. Alas, they were extremely hard to work with (and I won't even mention ripping them!). However, recently, I did a huge engine rewrite (I actually rewrote practically the whole engine) and now I am using the YsIV: Mask of the sun graphics. They are easier to work with, and much easier to rip. This will shorten the release date a great deal. The game might not look as elegant, but it won't be a pain to make either. Besides, I find the YsIV graphics charming.
While at it, I'd like to give credit to my brother, Stefan (co-admin here at Ancient land of Ys) for helping me with the engine. Although I had to dump most of his work in the engine rewrite though, but he's still got a finger in this project.
Well, I guess I have told you most of what I can tell at this point, but as soon as I progress in the project, I will give you a little beta version for you to try out, and see if you like it. I will also add an own forum for this game.
About that, later, I could use some beta testers, to find bugs and then report them to me, so I can concentrate on developing the game instead of searching for bugs, it'd save a great deal of time for me, as well as the game would be more bug-free. Of course you'd get your credits in the game and documentation. (But you all will, because all of you deserve it!)
Now, I will tell you about the few functions the engine provides to date:
If you are worried about system requirements, I can't tell at this moment, and they will probably rise as I progress. I guess ~400-500MHz will be enough. It may run on slower computers though. (I'm making it on a 2,6GHz CPU and it's running fine.)
Here's the pre-story to the game, tell me what you think - if it's "exciting" enough. Also, scroll down to the bottom of this post to view screenshots.
Pre-story
Adol was just finished with his adventures in Afukora, after revealing the mysteries within the Kefin desert, he was traveling once again....
He was walking along the road, when suddenly a child bumped into him, panting. What's wrong, Adol asked. The child didn't answer. Not a speaker, huh? Adol asked. Well, it's okay, I was like that as well, when I was a kid. The child looked up to him, as Adol was going to say "Hello", the eyes of the child flashed and turned red. He roared and bit him in the neck, then jumped up on a hill several feet away from him. Adol took out his sword, this was not an ordinary child.... Suddenly, he heard a distant rumbling, and soon he could see hundreds of people running towards him and the child, holding torches, swords and all kinds of weapons. Monster! Demon! darned child of Fact! He heard the people scream towards the child. Then, in an instant, everything dissapeared.... The people, the child.... Everything was calm and quiet. Adol looked at his neck, he was bleeding.... The child was gone, like he'd never been there. But the wound from when he bit Adol was still there. Adol started to feel a little dizzy, and soon he fell to the ground....
Several hours later, he woke up in a dark barn, or at least that was what he thought. The tried to open the door, but it was locked. He reached for his pocket, to grab something to open the lock with, but it was empty! He looked around, all his belongings were gone!
After a short moment, the door creaked open. An old man could be seen in the daylight behind him. He's awake. The man said. Adol walked towards the old man. Hello, he said, where am I?
You are in the small village known as Rad. There's a town to the north, called Ryd. We found you on the road a bit to the west, it looks like you've been bit by a Nyath.
This means trouble....
What kind of trouble, Adol asked. Well, you've been bit by a Nyath, therefore, it will follow you wherever you go, you can't see it, you can't touch it. But you've been cursed. It's within you, and when you feel frightened, it will reappear. You can't rid this curse, and eventually, you will die. What!? I.... Will.... die? I'm afraid so. The man whispered. But I cannot tell how much time you have left. It depends on the individual. Adol silently walked out of the barn.... Outside, he found his sword. He picked it up. Then, like out of nowhere - the Nyath appeared! It laughed at Adol, mocking him. I will kill you! Adol screamed as he jumped towards the Nyath with his sword. With a icy scream, the Nyath fell into the river behind him. The river turned red around the quiet body of the Nyath.... Then it dissapeared.
In an instant, all the people fell to the ground. Nooo! The man screamed. You have poisoned the headwaters of our land! The curse of the Nyath is now over all of us who have ever been in connection with the water! Now we will all die! Not a single one will survive! There's only one hope left.... The Crimson tears of legend. The only thing that can purify our water. With the six sacred Crimson Tears, we can apply them in the Headwater Citadel in the temple in Dermath cliffs. The problem is, these Crimson Tears are protecting the land from danger, and if they are moved, terrible things will happen. On top of it all, the Dermath cliffs are floating in the air, and nobody knows how to reach them.
