Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't we be using ORIGINAL arrangements? That "Palace" arrangement sounds like a General MIDI version recording of disc 1, track 6 from Perfect Collection. Do you have any original arrangements? Also (and I know this is going to look like I'm putting myself in direct competition with Rudi here), but you know, original game music has been something of a hobby/aspiration of mine for the last 10 years or so, and I've developed a fairly Falcom-esque style. In fact, I even use the same synthesizers that they use! Some of my favorites: www.justusjohnston.com/Music/MP3/theroadtosalvation.mp3www.justusjohnston.com/Music/MP3/cloudwilderness.mp3www.justusjohnston.com/Music/MP3/atthelakeside.mp3www.justusjohnston.com/Music/MP3/80scartoon.mp3www.justusjohnston.com/Music/MP3/kingofthenerds.mp3Well, I don't have time to make an entire soundtrack for you (it takes a LOT of time!!), but if this project ever starts to look like it might be a reality (meaning the engine's already complete, and the scenario is already planned), give me a buzz, and I'd be happy to write some originals for you.

To be honest, Justus, I've been planning on contacting you about this, but I didn't think you'd be interested, so I didn't.
Well, no, I do not have any arrangements. My brother has has offered to make music for me, but it's MIDI and I'd prefer to use mp3s, I don't really like MIDI sound (when played on a "regular" sound card, that is).

Midi sound sucks and yes, Justus is correct that the Palace arrangement follows the original arrangement by JDK, at the time the only arrangement we had. Believe me, original arrangements and remixes are no problem. I do agree that original game music would be nicer, but then again, it's not an 'original game' either, with borrowed story background, characters and theme. If Seldane wants original music, I would be all for it, and I don't see that proposition as competition Justus, I see it as a possible joint venture. You already mention you don't have time to do a complete soundtrack, and neither do I. But perhaps the two of us together would have enough time. [edit] ps Justus, I LOVE "At the lakeside", very nice!

Thank you, Rudi. Believe me, I am VERY grateful you didn't take my post the wrong way. I've been a member on forums where I would be flamed from sunup to sundown for such a post. But yeah, you've pretty much got the gist of it.
There is something I would like to point out though. Let's not deny anyone a chance to work on this music if they are good at writing music. If they don't have good gear to render MP3s, then that's OK, because I do. I mean, you realize that at its heart, the music I posted a few threads up is nothing more than MIDIs recorded on certain synthesizers, right? ....and mixed and mastered, admittedly. But generally, if you happened to own an SC-8850, I could send you .MIDs and they would sound virtually the same as those recordings.
So anyways, my point with all this? Well, if your brother happens to write GOOD music, have him send his .MIDs my way, and I'll render them with my gear, mixed and mastered. ...Do make sure he actually DOES write good music though. I've seen way too many cases where the director will have a friend or family member write music for a game just because he does. It's why a lot of video game music is as mediocre as it is, I'm afraid.
As for being too busy to write for your game - I am! At least, as it stands right now, I am. I am entirely too busy to write music for a game that isn't going anywhere. I've been part of too many projects that have turned into dead ends to start on another. Now, if your game IS going somewhere, that's an entirely different matter. I don't mind writing music for free (well, for an Ys game anyways) if there's a good chance that the game will be good, and will actually be finished. That's why I said I'll only start writing music when the engine is complete and the scenario is all planned. Oh, and someone else to do sound effects would be good too....but I can do that as well if I must.
That being said, you're going to need a larger team to finish this, I guarantee. Getting a second coder would be good. Also, at least one dedicated scenario designer/script writer, a number of people to use as level designers (for whom you'll have to create utilities), at least one artist for designing characters, and preferably a second for designing enemies, 2 or 3 graphics guys who can do sprites (you are using sprites, right?) would be a good thing. Beyond that, beta testers of course.
Heh, you can tell I've done this before, eh? But I know from experience - one-man teams don't cut it. Two-man teams also don't cut it (where I'm doing the music and someone else is doing everything else). I was part of a six-man team once that ALMOST cut it, but then half of them got hired by Capcom after we'd been working on the game for 3 years straight.

But yeah, you've pretty much got the gist of it. I am too old (30) and know myself too well to get easily insulted. Besides, the things you said made sense...I must admit I hesitated to post the "Palace" arrangement since it was so close to the original. I guess it's more of a demo for producing and mixing quality than musical creativity. The SD-Snatcher songs I mentioned are a far better demo of that. I don't own an SC-8850, I own an XP50 with 4 expansions, a Juno-60, a Kawai K1r and a Yamaha DX7. Lately I have been using a lot of customly created sounds, so I can't say the same. My Midi's don't play anywhere but home I've seen that plenty of times myself. Which is too bad I hope this will go better. And if so, I would be delighted to help on the sound and music, and if Justus would help too, double the fun!

Well, at least I guess music isn't a problem anymore. But anyway, I know what you mean about that family stuff, but my brother has been working with music his whole life, and he really knows what he is doing. He also does his own music and records it, using an electric guitar and a synthesizer. His friend has somewhat of a studio as well, but he also makes some MIDI. Anyway, he did one song for me previously, it was just a rush, but still good. But that is a good idea, Justus. To render the MIDIs. Anyway, you're also right on the second point - it's hard to do it alone. But then I can also make it as I want to. The basic features of the engine are finished (sword, etc). The scenario isn't fully planned yet and it will probably take a very long time before this game is even somewhat playable (I have sent out demo versions to several people though). Anyway, I haven't worked on this for over a month, working with it gets quite dull after a while since I haven't really started on the level design yet (which is the fun part). Anyway, I'll post a news update sometime. Until then....

I agree that you should not use MIDI's. They were cool back in the 80's but now MP3's rule the music scene and sound just as good as WAV. Looking forward to your BETA of Crimson Tears Seldane!

I agree that you should not use MIDI's. They were cool back in the 80's but now MP3's rule the music scene and sound just as good as WAV. Looking forward to your BETA of Crimson Tears Seldane! Er...I don't think you really understand the difference between MIDIs and a digital recording. MIDIs are only a set of instructions that tell a synthesizer how to play the music (and the synthesizer provides the sounds that play). A recording can be any recorded sound, whether it's live instruments, singing, or just a recording of a synthesizer playing a MIDI . One isn't inherently "better" than the other because they are two completely different kinds of things. For instance, I generally use several synthesizers in order to record my music. I have several expensive synthesizers and I know how to use them quite well, whereas most people with a computer only have the synthesizer that's built into Windows, or their cheap sound card, so obviously, a MIDI file isn't going to sound as good as with my expensive synthesizers. Now...if every single person who played this game happened to own a Yamaha MU-128 with a few expansions (like physical modelling), THEN maybe I could distribute MIDI files and they would sound pretty darn good everywhere....but that would be a pretty unreasonable expectation. In general, MIDI is no longer something that applications tend to make use of, but instead is only used as a tool by musicians like me. The only real reason to use MIDIs though would be space issues. MIDIs are really small since they don't contain any actual audio data. But yeah, there's no reason to use MIDIs anymore for a game. If you're distributing via cd-rom, then OGGs are fairly small (a 2-hour soundtrack would only take up 200 MB if high quality encoding is used, less than 1/3 of one disk), and OGGs don't sound too terrible even at low quality encoding. So, if you're distributing on the internet, then a full hour of music at 64 kbps would only take up 30 or 40 MB, and would be perfectly acceptible-sounding to most people. Dial-up users would be pretty screwed, but you can't allow that to lower the quality of your game!

and even then, true Ys fans will still download it. whether it takes 1 hour to 4 hours can't wait to get some news about the story.
