I saw the other music thread and couldn't help but think of this question. I know a lot of us LOVE the JDK Band, Nobuo Uematsu, Akira Yamaoka and a few others famous for our hip gaming soundtracks -- and yes all of you can include your vote here too. Of course I want to see how diverse our community is as well -- heck, this thread doesn't even have to be about Japanese artists; it could be Romanian artists, (For the record, I LIKE O-Zone, but I much prefer Haiducii!) Polish artists, Portuguese... the world is your limit! Let me give you a quick example! I’m totally in love with “Maximum the Hormone”, their tracks are hip and off the wall — they’re so heavy and they jam like they mean it… and obviously they have a lot of fun while doing so. They seem to endulge in a wide variety of rock and metal, (in such a fun and cool way, might I add) much like our now deceased “System of a Down”. So what artists do you listen to and why?

I don't really like much Japanese music. It's really hard to find music here and the stuff on the radio is just awful.
However, I have managed to find a few bands I like:
Chage & Aska - They started out in the late 70s/early 80s as folk singers (their first few albums are really awesome) then sort of turned into JPOP sensations. So the quality takes a huge nosedive in the early to mid 80s and they only start to get better in the early 90s. Then, around the late 90s and since then every album they have released has been awesome. No Doubt is a great album, possibly their best. Lots of cool electronic stuff and the whole album is very moody.
Mr.Children - These guys are still very popular. Their early albums are simply awful, but they take a drastic turn for the better with Shinkai which reminds me of Pink Floyd at times. From then on they have released great album after great album. Their newest album, Home, was pretty disappointing as it was mostly ballads. Mr.Children excel when they are playing rock songs and experimenting with electronics, not when singing sappy ballads.
Boris - Every album they have released so far has been great. Fantastic noise band. They alternate between drawn out droning ambient albums and high energy noise rock. Their latest album is pretty accessible I think, but their best work was their album so far is their collaboration with Sunn0))), Altar.
Akira Yamaoka - The first Silent Hill soundtrack is a work of art. Someone described it as like listening to someone torturing machines, and that is so true. The second Silent Hill soundtrack is pretty good, but nowhere near as good as the first. The others are bad (SH3) and mediocre (SH4). His first (and so far only) non-game album, iFuturelist, is pretty awesome, though it kind of gets boring the last few songs.

Umm... I don't listen to so many Japanese artists. Our parents played us almost nothing but classical music and Scottish traditional music growing up, and I've kind of just...gone on listening to that as I've gotten older? I don't really know much about music outside of that field. Besides which, I have horrible music taste, so the few artists I do listen to are probably super-embarrassing. ^^; That being said, here's the Japanese artists I like most... Mimori Yusa www.youtube.com/watch?v=szcDfsJZnAswww.youtube.com/watch?v=vy-TZ4f6iKwHanako Oku www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WO_tNHhi1Ewww.youtube.com/watch?v=OfqS623ITT0Shione Yukawa www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyNrYlx26NoAkiko Yano www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSG0gsTtnoEwww.youtube.com/watch?v=8WdO3BeEnwcLocal Bus www.youtube.com/watch?v=PODoE3yR8L8Quinka, with a Yawn www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS19iKqoWUcKeiko Matsui www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzqsWxau_gIwww.youtube.com/watch?v=xXgPIxSEFAYI guess there's Origa too. I like a couple of her earlier albums quite a bit. But she's really a Russian artist who just happened to be made good in Japan, so I'm not sure if she belongs on this list~ ^^; As for game / anime music... I'd link some here, but I'm sure I know way less than all of you, and it'd probably be a little bit insulting of me. ^^; With that in mind, I'll just say that my absolute favourite is Yasunori Mitsuda, and that I also like Hitoshi Sakimoto, Yuki Kajiura, and Yoko Kanno. Oh, and JDK~! But that's a given. ^^;

Wow. Mr. Children is still going? D: I only know two songs from them: [es] ~ theme of es ~ and See-Saw Game. And that's only cuz I own the singles. :P
Erm, I know I answered this in another music thread before but I loves old school (like before 1999) LUNA SEA, L'Arc~en~Ciel, trf, globe, X/X-Japan, and some random artists here and there. And, as I mentioned before, I pay attention to the songs themselves more than the artists. :B
