Yeah it took me a while to grasp that too. Its an approach not used in strategy rpgs, which is why I think the series is not well supported stateside. Fire Emblem really pisses me off sometimes and that is exactly why I love it.

See, that's the problem. I use everyone. That's what they're for =[
Just powerleveling a few people to invincibility is lame as shit. What's the pointof a party if you don't use it?

I see it like The Captain. xD
But if I ever wanted to complete the game (the whole series actually), I had no other choice.
Though you can lessen the difficulty from FE6 and later on using the Support System. Abusing this system really makes things easier. Read a FAQ about it to know how to abuse it at its maximum and there you go: you'll be able to level up everyone... MAYBE.

You can lower the difficulty, but the AI really gets dumb and the "Fire Emblem" edge is gone. I always pick a good set of 8 characters that can really take a beating. Thing is by the end of the game they are level 25+ and some of my other characters are level 4...

I'm one of those people who actually picked a couple of people I liked and went along with them till the end. Though somehow, I don't think I ever had anyone at level 4 by the end..? My preferred group of people was never small though sooo... it sometimes was a pain to level them up. Fire Emblem 7 was my first ever and for some odd reason, I LOVED all the mages and kept sticking to them! End result - not a very defensively strong party (though my Lucius and Raven always made up for that with their amazing evasion). What I DID find hard was the support system! I loved watching the relationships develop between the people and sometimes getting the conversations was a real pain! Especially the Eliwood-Ninian ending in FE7.

Mages are awesome!! High agility and awesome power. A single mage will get you out of a serious jam, and most of the time come out unscathed. I think thats why you only ever get a few of them per game, as when they become high leveled, they are VERY strong.
Anyone try the new Wii Fire Emblem?

"Drakengard's Final Boss, accompanied by an Unexpected Genre Change, is horribly difficult to defeat. The game has done a good job with the Sorting Algorithm Of Evil and keeping the challenge proportional to the player's status in the game, but when you hit that final chapter, the Final Boss will make you rip your hair out."
I'm surprised no one mentioned THE 1ST FORM OF DRAKENGARD 2'S HARD MODE FINAL BOSS.
HOLY FUCKING HELL. How does ANYONE beat it!? I'm quite sure I wasn't the only one that would get disoriented when hopping on Lagna but when you only have literally 10 fucking seconds to figure out which stone to hide behind and that it's damn hard to even navigate well on the bloody dragon, you can be sure that death is just around the corner.
I gave up trying to defeat the thing cuz just getting to a stone (or was it crystal) quickly and accurately was just way too hard. And to think you had to do it FIVE FUCKING TIMES.
And no, cheating with invulnerability doesn't help either. :B
Oh yeah, Fire Emblem 3 and 4 were nasty too. 4 starts off with like either no one with the ability to heal or you had the one healer/Sister -- whatever they were called -- that showed up a bit later. And ... well ... it's hard to imagine folks completing the first stage without taking damage everywhere. But then again, that's just me. :B
I cheated my way through the second half of Fire Emblem 3 since I was playing the ROM and just reloaded save states like mad to get beatable opponents in the colloseum battles! I r lame! :D
At any rate, I suck at SRPGs so I tend to stay away from them (or cheat to get through them).
HA. Gradius series is listed. I am so sad in Gradius. I never even beat the first stage boss. :P Hell, I even DIE a few times just trying to get to the boss. And to think I bought the bloody thing from Virtual Console. :3
I think I suck at gaming more than Some d00d. :/
Gyahahaha. DDR Oni and Challenge stages! ^O^;;; They're considered HARD for a reason (like ... because they're the hardest modes???). ^^;
Goofy story: My friend and I were playing the Naoki course on challenge mode on ... I forget what mix ... at the arcade. It had the battery life set up so if you miss 3 or 4 times, you fail. We lasted about 10 - 20 seconds. :P
It was so embarrasing too cuz there were a bunch of other players around the machine (you know -- those Asian kids that play in pairs and can do like every freakin' Heavy mode tune with an A or higher rank) and they were all like "That's it?".
=____=;;;
Oh and whoever was going off on Devil May Cry 3 on that page makes me feel happy because IIRC, I was able to get to the 5th stage on Normal without dying too much or replaying the second stage 239487 times. 'Course, after a while, I just said screw it and went to play on Easy. XD
I think I only completed the game in Japanese under Easy or Normal (probably Easy). Then came the Special Edition where I just zipped through it with Vergil. XD

I have yet to play a Drakengard game, even though I own both. I have heard about the impossible end boss and I am a little intimidated.
Honestly I hate the end boss to Legend of Heroes ToV (psp). I still havent beat him, and I have tried many, many times.
