I came upon this site today, and it was quite an interesting read. I agreed with most of the titles listed, and found a few that I have never played. I love to be challenged when I play games and this is a great list of the hard of the hard. tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NintendoHard

Thanks a lot for the link. It's amazing, I played many of the titles they talked about back in the day, finished a lot of them, and never even thought about the difficulty level. There are a lot there that I've never even heard of, so I will probably give them a try if I can ever pry myself away from the God of War series.

"Project X gives you five lives to complete five levels, each one capped with a boss you'd be lucky to beat with ten. One of them even laughs at you when you die." Remind me again WHY my project's codename is "Project XX"?! Totally unrelated! Ha, funny to see Rayman on that list; that wasn't too tough! I am, however, intrigued to attempt the SNES Star Wars games and Out Of This World again.

I didn't find the SNES Star Wars games hard at all, and I suck at video games.

Agreed, but the list is a personal one. Its neat to see the shift between when games had to be really challenging to feel like you got your money worth. Its a different gaming world now, as it takes nice visuals, and nice audio and a ton of hype to sell a game.
IMO Wonder Boy for the master system is super hard.... cant pass the fifth stage.... stupid flys.

Yeah, that game is hard... but Adventure Island 1 (which is the same game, only with reduced visuals and sound) is MUCH harder! Why? Only three lives - no continues! By the way, the introduction implies that new games are easy, and that he will make a list of old hard NES games, etc. But there are almost no old games on the actual list! PS: There's also a remake of Adventure Island on PS2 (or more like a whole new game, as only the first level is the same, the rest is new) is insanely hard!! I cannot beat the fifth level - DESPITE the save function in it! You can start directly on level 5, but I just can't beat it. It just cannot be done!

Unfortunately, cheating is the only way to beat some games.

Oh wow... I've actually played some games out of that list! Didn't expect I would have played any actually! The Fire Emblem games weren't hard. And most certainly Vagrant Story wasn't either! (And I'm horrible at challanging battles! Meh... I'm horrid at anything halfway challanging!) (The SaGa Frontier games [not mentioned?] on the other hand drove me INSANE! )

Heart of the Alien is a semi-official sequel. The author of Another World actually had nothing to do with it, and he really didn't want it to be made (because Another World had a definite ending). But, they did it anyway because they wanted to milk that cow. I've also completed Another World... sort of. When I bought it used, the instruction manual had a bunch of codes in it (from the previous owner), and when I got (SUPER) stuck in the game, I used those codes to skip that level. Funny, the last two levels were the easiest in the game. Especially the one before the very last one... you just had to get that machine running. Actually, I really hated the game, but I was young and didn't have an unlimited supply of games. I only had around six SNES games at the time, and of course I played anything I could get ahold of to death... Even though it pissed me off BIG TIME! Another World is by far the most frustrating game I have played. Damn, I get angry just thinking about it.

I just remember the first level. Never got past the second one; but that was back in the hayday when I first played King's Quest IV: Heart Goes Yonder. (or something like that)
I LOVE the remake of King's Quest I, however; it's made by a fangroup called Tierra.

Obviously. Flashback has nothing to do with Another World in the first place. I don't know why some people think of it as some kind of sequel.

I already knew all that, and I still don't consider it a sequel or even a spiritual sequel to Another World. I can find almost nothing in common (I mean TRULY in common). Similiar type of animation for the character, yes... but the art style is very different! Another World is more surreal and dark, whereas Flashback looks like a cartoon or something. And the gameplay is different too! Flashback seems pretty focused on combat, while Another World mainly is about jumping and puzzling things out (nah, honestly- it's all about dying!!!!!).

(The SaGa Frontier games [not mentioned?] on the other hand drove me INSANE! ) You should try the Romancing Saga game... those are VERY hard at times. You get to some bosses and it takes a month of grinding for hopeful abilities. I find fire emblem super hard at times, because I dont like letting a single person die. Plus the game is very easy to unbalance itself if you forget to divy up exp properly. I got so overprotective of my "general" characters for so long, by the end of the game they were useless in combat, and a severe liability.

Out of this World drove my twelve year old self to madness just trying to get anywhere. =[
Also Fire Emblem is hard for the reason Justin said, losses are completely unacceptable, so you have to be near perfect. Especially if you are the sort that likes to XP balance a party.

[...]Especially if you are the sort that likes to XP balance a party. Yup, that's totally correct. While playing Roy's FE6 (my first FE), I had lots of INSANE trouble. Not only because I try to keep everyone's heads in the right place, but especially because I always wanted everyone to be around the same levels. Later, it became nearly impossible to progress by keeping this up, as well as saving the best equipment. A friend (FE specialist) later told me that you have to actually "choose" which characters you will want to use the most, and which you won't. When I tried what he said, man, the game became unexplicably easier. It was still hard, but MUCH better than before. I assume the game was meant to be played that way, choosing who you want to focus on.
