Does Madoka have violent killing in it? I don't know anything about it at all.

There's actually barely any blood or violent killing at all. There's just lots and lots of tragedy and death in it. The one part that could count as a 'violent death' didn't actually show anything gorey.

What's the appeal? Is there a well constructed world this occurs in? Are the character well written, multidimensional, and show believable growth as people? Is there some truly unique ideas to the story that must be seen to be experienced?
Or is it just putting underage characters into horrible situations in an attempt to evoke pathos from the audience in a deconstruction of the magical girl genre...again?

What Schlag said. All the gushing made me investigate a little. Then I found out the genre, and vomited. Is there actually a reason for an almost 30 male to give this show a look? And, That IS horrible! Even the worst dubs I've seen were at least comprehensible!

Okay. So far I've only just seen gushing about the series and not one comment on why people like it

Just watched Evangelion 2.22 and HOLY CRAP, ITS GOOD!!!
At first, I was a bit leary about the changes Anno did with the plot, but after watching it, I can see how all of it functions.
My only complaint, the super long wait for the third and fourth films (and if it will end similar to End of Evangelion or not).

I completely forgot abou the remakes until Ash mentioned 2.22 the other day.
I've read that while all the flaws are fixed, however, all the philosophical stuff and biblical/mythological allusions were removed. This, along with the mysteries, were the reasons I actually liked the series.
Does it still have the nerdy goodness of the original series, or is it just another action mech movie now?

It's no longer just a remake, it's its own entity. Which means it's different... very. Yeah all What Do You Mean It's Not Symbolic?! stuff is gone. I'd say a lot of what's new is a bunch of twisted references to the original series and great action scenes. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but I at least enjoyed watching 2.22 Though... The most amazing scene for me is the one where Shinji yells at Gendo to let him pilot Eva 1 in a mirror of TV ep.1 where Gendo is telling him to pilot it.

Blame the Colombians who dubbed it (even Chile sounds professional compared to this), I simply donĀ“t understand why everyone think is good... At least both of them have been improving a bit lately (but just a bit) Chile is good dubbing.....The Evangelion dub is amazing, I don't know what do you mean with that.

Guess I'll update my list of current reads now cuz I'm bored~
Fairy Tail Still loving this series and don't know why cuz it has like every shounen manga cliche under the sun. I guess I'm a sucker for those comrades-in-arms who would protect each other till they die kind of stories.
Noblesse Beautiful men everywhere! AAHHH! <3 Current storyline needs less fighting, or at least more focus on Rai and Frakenstein cuz their story is more interesting than all the bloody battles going on at the moment.
Witch Hunter This Korean comic needs to be updated more often.
Needless It's a fun read! I don't think there's been a single chapter that didn't have some goofy scene in it.
D.Gray-Man The chapters come out so slowly to the point that I usually have to read a previous chapter in order to refresh what the heck went on before.
Soul Eater Story needs to get a move on. Too many damn fights are getting in the way. Also, black blood stuff is creepy.
Aflame Inferno Chapters for this come out once in a blue moon. :( It's gotten kind of interesting too. :((
Freezing I hope Louis dies a horrible death.
Defense Devil The mangaka BETTER end this by the next chapter or two cuz it really looks like an ending is coming up. I don't want this thing dragged out like Bleach.
Speaking of which ...
I'm wondering why I'm still reading:
Bleach I think I'm just a masochist. Currently storyline with those Fullbring folks be stupid. Well, more like the characters have stupid abilities. I think Kubo is running out of GOOD ideas.
Rosario+Vampire II I think I'm only following this for the pretty men that occasionally pop up. Don't really care about the story or characters otherwise.
Monochrome Factor Shitty -- as in, if English isn't your first language, DON'T TRANSLATE IN ENGLISH -- fan scanlations are making this a tough read. I believe I'm also sticking to this for the pretty men~~ XD
Random, occasional reads:
Naruto I pretty much just read whatever current chapter is up whenever I feel like it. Doesn't seems like I'm missing many plot details even when I do this. :P
Vampire Knight I'm just getting confused as to who is the relative of who/who is related to who and crap right now. :P

I watched Bleach up to the part with the Bounts. I managed to finish that got a little further then just got bored with it. I wasn't sure if it was just me or not. I have like 2 more season box sets I still need to watch and haven't worked up the nerve to view them.

Guin Saga I went in with pretty high expectations, considering Kentaro Miura credited it (or at least the series of novellas it's based on) as a primary inspiration for Berserk, along with Flesh + Blood and The Evil Dead. So far it does not disappoint. Intriguing fantasy story, likable characters, and it follows one continuous plotline; a huge advantage over all the garbage anime I keep running into with meaningless throw away episodes.
But I really wish the musclebound leopard-headed protagonist would put on something other than a cod-piece. We got enough of that exhibitionist behavior from Awwnold. . . and it makes it painfully obvious that the show is based on a book from the eighties.

^ Hahaha. Monster is good stuff! Definitely different than your usual anime.
Tiger & Bunny and Nichijou are my two "current" shows, and I love them both dearly. I'm being kept very well entertained.
Also, watching Gintama. Always and forever. One day I'll finally catch up!
