UGH!!!!!!! THE FONT!!!!! WTF IS THAT!? It reminds me of both Western Wild Arms-like stuff and mechanical ... things. I miss the cute logo and exclamation marks from the first game! TOT~

Yeah, I don't really like that wild west cowboy logo either. It doesn't seem to fit with the theme of the game. The summer's almost over, well, not really, but why not give a date instead?

My, how lovely. ^^; I agree with Wyrdwad about the whole Skies of Arcadia thing it's got going. And Skies is one of my absolute favourite games of last generation. I really liked the innocent, adventurous, slightly Lunar-esque feel it had, and I had so much fun playing it. With that in mind, this poster...sort of makes me feel all gooey inside. I want.
I remember my brother downloading (Yes yes, I know. But I wouldn't even have found out about Falcom had it not been for piracy. Sometimes good things can come from not-so-good ones~ ^^; ) Zwei back when it was first released, and we played quite a bit of it together. My Japanese was terrible then, but it seemed...very much a 'me' sort of game. The graphical style was so cute, the music was really nice, and, while I'm really rotten at action games, it seemed like a lot of fun. So I'd definitely like to give this one a go too~!
I agree about the font, though. It just rubs me up the wrong way somehow. =( But it's a minor quibble. Excitement~! ^^;
Oh, and...is that the Gurumin engine? It looks kind of similar... Or...something new?

Definitely the Gurumin engine. Click here for speculation.

Definitely the Gurumin engine. Click here for speculation. *nods* I thought so. I guess I should be mad that this is yet another Falcom game without its own engine? I mean...they did what...six games with the Napishtim one? (That's if the three Sora no Kiseki games are based off it? They look very similar, anyway...) Still, I find it rather hard to care. New Falcom is new Falcom~ ^^; If it were up to me, they could keep making games on their old engines forever, and I'd keep playing them. ...I'm really far too easy to please. ;__; Yaaaay, Elin's got another adorable moogle avatar! I loved your avatar on the Anime-BT boards, and this one's just as cute! Anyhoo, yeah, if you have a chance to play through Zwei!! sometime, I think you'll greatly enjoy it. The other one was better, I think. ^^; But I felt it would be cheap to just re-use it~ At least this one makes me think of the moogles from Final Fantasy IX, and that funny little floaty way they fly downwards towards their books when you ask to save your game, and... I need help. ;__; I don't even really play Square games anymore, but moogles are just far too sweet for words. Gurumin should come first, I think. ^^; And...finishing Felghana. And about a hundred other games. I have so much catching up to do. ;__; I only stopped playing games for a couple of years, and I already have this massive backlog built up that I'll probably never finish. Wroom! Racing mini-game? *stifles laughter* ? Actually, Threads of Fate reminded me a little of Zwei, now that I think about it? ^^; Maybe a little bit more serious, but with a similar sort of feel.

No, the ED6 games DO use the Ys VI engine. Modified, yes... but it is the same one.

A base engine has nothing to do with gameplay! Lost Odyssey for Xbox 360 was built on the Unreal 3 engine - Unreal 3 is an FPS, but Lost Odyssey most certainly isn't.

So if I change the side mirrors, the tires, the breaks and the backsteats of a car, it becomes a different brand new car? It doesn't work that way. It IS the same engine, and it works VERY similiarly to the way it does in the Ys games, as everything but the battle system is practically unchanged. It looks, feels and sounds the same. This is not a matter of opinion - it's the facts. Same engine. Modified, yes, but the Ys VI engine was modified for YsF as well. Does that make it a whole new engine? No.

Woo, I'm back from a really long hiatus... And I'm gonna join in on the discussion.
FM-77, let me ask you something, what's your definition of a game "engine". 3d graphics? The use of 2d sprites on 3d background? What about the implementation of menus and interaction of gameplay? That probably doesn't count, does it?
You're using Lost odyssey and unreal as an argument. I've not played those games, but it seems to me that lost odyssey looks like an unreal clone in terms of 3d graphics. How're the battles like in lost? Also in the exact same 3d graphics with people in 3rd person shooting and chopping each other? Just like in Unreal, where you shoot and chop stuff? If they're using the same way to render 3d movement and interaction in battles, then yeah same engine.
In that sense, perhaps your argument makes sense.
Now let's look at Ys6, YsF, YsO versus the LoH6 series. In the Ys series, you got an 8 directional 2d sprite/cel running amok, jumping and whacking stuff with detailed hand and leg animations in a backdrop of 3d.
In LoH6, you got 8 directional 2d sprites walking and running around without much animation to the legs and hands. Then in battles, the 8 directional 2d sprites are now more animated. But only certain commands would trigger certain animations not seen in Ys, like eyes blinking, sprites zooming in and out of the screen. And if you bother to check LoH6 3rd, they replaced some of the S-craft sprites with higher res 3d sprites.
Sure they used much of the same rendering method, but it's kinda obvious they had to modify the code to add in 2d menus, and define how the 2d/3d animations react with each other. Perhaps that's not enough for you? But we are talking about different graphics elements here, the use of 2d and 3d, dialogue bubbles, 2d face animations, different menu implementation, the use of a floating square matrix for the battle grounds, etc.
So what about Lost and Unreal? It seems to me even though lost is an "rpg", it's still pretty much the same kind of graphics throughout the game, whether in battle or not, maybe with more textures. 3d is still 3d. I dunno, maybe you can enlighten me on that?
Maybe I'm mincing my words, but it seems to me that there are quite a few differences in graphical implementation between Ys and LoH6. I suppose you can argue that it's just a modification of the graphics engine, but you can't deny that there are things in LoH6 not found in Ys.
The only similarities between both is the use of 2d sprites and 3d background and 3d effects. But the similarities kinda stop there don't you think? Is that even enough to call it an engine? Perhaps the only things they reuse are just the renders and textures, while everything else is determined by the whole game code?
That's just my 2 cents really. I'm kinda sitting on the fence here because well, both games are played so differently that they don't seem to be from the same mold but I can't deny the similar 2d/3d feel of the game. So my question is, what constitutes a "game engine"? And yes, I'm lazy to google it up.
On a side note, I'm so totally psyched by Zwei 2. Finally a PC game from Falcom for me to enjoy.

In a sense, Falcom turned their Volkswagons into Ferraris, and their Neons into Mustangs. Edit: Next thing you know, we'll have an Ys with power steering, reclinable seats, dual airbags, surround sound, nitro, nifty neon/blacklights underneath and around the plates, spinners, and hydraulics. ...and if Adol's going to the North Pole this next trip, we may want to skip out on all/rear-wheel drive, lest he be spinning like a dog.

Is it confirmed that the North Pole is the next destination? I'd have preferred the next to be the continuation of the westward sailing.

Nothing has been revealed, confirmed or denied. Only speculation. The North Pole, however, should be a very late journey if it's ever shown in an Ys game. There's the Five Dragons they've yet to tackle, but if/when they tackle that is unclear. It's always sounded epic, if not clearly old-school. Who knows, this story could be something new altogether. It could be a side story, or another Ys with multiple characters. I'd personally love to see an Ys Origin II, just to see Ys in the sky in full 3D, with the new-fangled gameplay we've come to know and love.

Heheh, don't we all? What ever happened to that so-called "play as Dogi" cheat for Ys III (SNES/Genesis)?!

I want playable Dogi!! (: -Tom How come Dogi always ends up in a Falcom game discussion somehow? ^^; Anyway, I'm still waiting for the Dogi action figure with collapsable wall! I prefer a Kubrick type figure although a Nendoroid would be super awesome! He'd be so adorable! *____*
