I say we choose whatever doppiapunta is comfortable with. And for consistency, I think the font used in Ys VI would be best.

What font would you rather use? (I'm seriously asking, not being a jerk, I want to know. ) I suggested some fonts in YS6 topic but they weren't good enough. So I've just told my opinion. They're too standard and modern, they don't fit game style.

Comic sans doesn't get enough hate, and that makes me very sad. It's easily the most horrible thing mankind has ever created. It's worse than the atom bomb, and everything.

I'm incredibly late in declaring this, considering how you all are already arguing over the fonts, but seeing that this translation is actually happening has made me very, very, VERY, incredibly happy! I never imagined I'd actually get the chance to be able to play and understand Ys Origin! (Now, all one needs to do is get one's hands on a copy of the game! X'D ) [Oi Play-Asia! Stock some copies of the japanese version! X( ] As for the font, I don't mind whatever you all choose, as long as its readable! If I had to choose, I might declare Tekton Pro just for consistency's sake. (Although, one might say 'what consistency?!' considering how all the Ys translation patches seem to run off with different fonts. [Well... I also liked how it looked.. :'D]) As for Cicle, its a bit too sleek and modern for my tastes (I prefer more informal, scribbly stuffs, especially when it comes to dialogue/speech bubbles) but it seems... it might just go with Ys Origin..? I remember the single character wallpapers had writing similar to that font on them.

Surprised to see this being kick-started all of a sudden, I'll be looking forward to its progress As for the font, I must be the only one who doesn't care as long as it's readable, probably because I can't name a single one the older Deuce/Nightwolve projects used >_> I can certainly see why people don't feel a kiddy font fits the game though.

The question is, are you OK with Cicle? I know you don't like it... but if we were to use it, would you really care all that much? -Tom I won't try to change the font if everyone else accepts it. But my opinion is the same. I'll be glad to see English patch with any readable font

Welll guys ...please keep your soul quiet. We will try to use Cycle font and we will submit here some screenshots in order to evaluate the result. For this time...we have a lot to do with charset changment, string export from the executable sand so manu damn things that the font to use is the less important one. So..don't be afraid we will submit something when it will be ready... and we will decide with you the best font for Ys Origin. Bye guys... thank for the suggestions

Lair, in my opinion, is good. I'd honestly go for the official Ys I + II name, however.
Eunica... doesn't look right to me. It makes me think of a eunich. You know... snippy snippy? Yunica looks best.
Toal and Sion are awesome names. Deno doesn't seem right, to me; but neither did Dino. Dean, just because that's the closest English equivalent. I can't think of anything that sounds *more* natural, than Dean.
Besides, I'd be inclined to play Super Mario RPG at that point; Deno->Geno
Dean'o looks sortof natural written, but it sounds more like a nickname (buddy talk) when spoken.

Reah is okay; I'm reasonably comfortable with that as it IS the official name. Unfortunately, it makes me think of dia rhea. I'm not a big fan of "Whip It" by Devo. I'm still mashing my head with the name, but that's kindof like hacking Faxanadu without any documentation/how-to/a hacker's guide to hacking/etc. Which technically, is what I do.

Reah is most DEFINITELY a name. It's rather common throughout Europe. You know that large continent, where the Ys events take place.
And: Lair is NOT an official name. It was ONLY used in Ys Book 1-2, which is full of bastardised names, like Colin for Dogi. Just one of many horrible names in that game.
Reah IS the official name, it's consistently being used by Falcom, everywhere. They have never used any other name for her. No other variation. Unlike many other of their names, this is quite uncommon, as they tend to change their names around quite a bit (Xandria, Sandria, Sandoria, for example).

Not that I've even touched Ys Origin (so perhaps I shouldn't be sticking my nose into your translations :'D) but I actually really, really prefer Reah to Lea. Lea... just reminds me of Lea Monde. (Or even Princess Leia for some reason!) Besides, I don't think a name has to be an actual name to exist! There are so many names that are just... created! As for Mr. Dino about whom I know nothing beyond seeing him on his wallpaper - I think Deno looks nicer too. However, doesn't Deeno sound closer to Dino? (I think had I not known of the original translation/name given by Falcom, I would have pronounced Deno with an 'en' sound rather than a stretched 'eee'? If that is how its supposed to be?)

Hmmm... no offense to anyone named Reah. Isn't it insulting though that a name could mean or sound like something completely different in someone else's language?

Those are the official translations provided by Falcom, so they are correct. No discussion about it. The probles arise wit the older Falcom characters who have had different variations of their names with dofferent localisations and different Japanese ports.
just my two cents on the matter...

That really doesn't mean much cuz Falcom can't even decide on the official English spelling of names themselves. I think Dark Fact has gone through several translations? :P And, more recently, Pockle from Zwei!! was spelled as Pockle but for some goddamn reason, it was switched to Pokkle in Zwei 2. So basically, it's only official in the particular game the name is in and not the series. :P I also loathe Lair. It's such a demented name to give to a person, especially a goddess. Rhea or Reah is mighty OK! And why would it be insulting if one name could mean something different in another language? You can't possibility take into account and look up the name in every language to ensure you're not pissing someone off. :B And if YOU get pissed off because your name is a swear word in, I dunno, the Land of Ducks and Swans then there's something wrong with you. :O

Dark Fact is not official either. Falcom has never used it. They've always called him Dalk Fukt/Dark Fukt. The only game that's used "Dark Fact" is, again, Ys Book 1-2. And I seriously think Dark Fact is an incredibly stupid name. Dark Fact, is SOMETHING, it's not a NAME. Dark Fukt is much better, as it could be a name, albeit a weird one. But I think Dalk Fukt is the best of all, as it actually SOUNDS like some sort of name. My name is Dark Fact. My name is a dark fact.

But I think Dalk Fukt is the best of all, as it actually SOUNDS like some sort of name. Though Dalk Fukt would have been a fukt up name to expose to North American children, that's a dark fact. I can see why localizers made the change.

My two cents: Keep it as Dino. I don't think this is a major problem, I've always read it with a long E sound every time I've run into it in any source, book or game, or even cartoons (see Flintstones). I figure most people would too. Even if not, it seems kinda hard to find a spelling that would nearly universally have it pronounced correctly ;/ Sion is good. Eunica looks kind of awkward but it is real and it might've been intended, yes. I wouldn't have any problems with it (and I'm not sure there are that many other names that start with an E either, the only one I can even think of off-hand is Epona...) though preference goes to Yunica. Toal is fine. I don't even know (m)any people that actually called him Thor other than the game itself. Reah...even more of a nightmare to get "right" than Dino. Lair (or Rare...lol) is more or less the "correct" way of romanizing the kata but not only do I agree that the name is ugly, but when your twin is named Feena, it just doesn't make ANY sense IMO. Leia/Lea is probably the closest English equivalent the average person would know, but even that isn't really perfect as far as pronunciation is concerned. Almost a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation here. Despite the diarhea jokes (I think someone else made a "Die, Reah!" one too in an older topic that almsot made me spit my juice at my monitor), I'd rather just leave it as Reah just...because I like it. Don't question my logic, because I don't have any
