This is awesome, parliaments are awesome.
Haven't been able to catch up on the address, but I've been watching this scenario for a few days now.

So have the Conservatives made Socialist-Separatists a new buzzword yet? Or has it been made into a fun portmanteau like Socioseparatist?
Did Harper really insult the whole of Quebec a couple days ago? I've heard stories, but having some confirmation would be nice.
And on a more serious note, is it likely that the conservatives will try to push for a new election? I'm not entirely clear on how that process works. =I
Edit: Actually, from what I'm reading, it seems more likely that Harper's just going to try to put things into prorogue and then try to get the coalition to destroy itself in the meantime.

The major news networks say "he could have insulted Quebec", but until I hear from some Quebec friends of mine, I can't honestly say.
Now Harper has a few choices. He can request the Governor General to shut down parliament early, so that people have a "cooling" down period. He can also announce a new election, but I am somewhat against this. We already elected him (I didn't vote for him), and I believe we should stand by our decision as a country.
I do have to say, his speech was kind of funny, as the "separatist" word came up so much, I thought I was watching a scene from Star Wars. If you watch the news (CTV, or Global) they all say Canada is having an "identity" crisis. Its basically Alberta (oil and business country) vs Quebec, which is a total croc of shit. Its a ruse to generate more media frenzy if you ask me.
All in all, I would say I hope our government considers what the "people" want. Its our vote that puts these guys there in the first place.

Hahaha, I knew that'd happen whilst I was editting.
Well, in that regard, haven't a lot more people voted for the Coalition than they have the Conservatives? I mean, I am pretty sure the three parties together got a lot more than...37% of the vote, was it? I think I read that The Liberals and NDP got 44% together; not certain how much Bloc Quebecois got, but overall doesn't that imply that they have more of a mandate to do this? Especially given that (as I have heard) a major theme of their campaigns was "Not more Harper."
I am curious, what caused the coalition to begin with? From what I've heard, it was because Harper was going to slash public funding of political parties, and pretty much hobble all of his opposition.

Yeah overall they have a higher vote than the Conservatives, and Coalition governments are common in Europe and Australia. Were making a bid deal because this is our first one.
Harper also tried to nix woman's right to equal pay, that is if Nancy is making less than Bill, she can't take the case to court legally.
In all fairness, if America has a Democratic President, we should also try to elect a more "left" leader to coninside. It just works better for both our countries that way, although Bush and Harper hated eachother.

This is the first time that Canada has had a coalition try to overthrow a minority government? Interesting, I had not heard this!
As far as having similar leaders in power, I can feel you on that, But, I dunno. It seems wrong for one nation to model its government on another's just because the two are neighbors. But that's kinda a side discussion.

Oh by all means, I don't want one country to copy another, it would just be nice if it worked out that way.
The current Conservative party is actually a combined grouping of the old Progressive Conservative Party, and the Canadian Alliance party. Both were "right" and joined together to deal with the Liberal's large MP count. They didn't form a majority though, and only became great contenders.
In all honesty the Conservatives took power due to other parties mistakes. The Liberals really dropped the F bomb, with Ad Scam. That sollied their name big time, and when they placed Paul Martin as their leader, things got worse. Everyone hated him, just like they dislike Stephan Dion now.... I don't get it.
Ether way, it was ether choose Jack Layton and the NDP (Very Left) or the Conservatives, which touted more promises in my opinion.

Goddamn stupid government. It's because of all this crappy stuff going on that the Canadian dollar is dropping even further.
Importing shit that I can't buy locally is even going to cost more now.
Maybe someone should go and blow up the parliament so we can start a-new with fresh faces and fresh ideas.

Aww that's sad! We had a mass suicide here in Calgary back in Summer, and of course everyone knows about that crazy Greyhound incident. Really sad year for that kind of stuff.
