I am trying to clean out a vista machine for a friend, and I am having some troubles getting used to everything.
How the hell do you run executable files now?? There is no "run" in the start menu.
i want to access msconfig, and would also like to know the best free anti virus/spyware protection available?
help me fellow Ys members, your my only hope.
ps sorry for the terrible grammar, as this laptop has a really messed keyboard.

Either type in "run" or "msconfig" (dont know if it is even in vista). for run it will come up with a program to double click and when you do that the old run box will appear. Ya microshaft really messed it up.

yes that's what I ended up doing, and it worked just fine. They should have called it search/run.
I am not familiar with vista's file system, and finding msconfig.exe or services.msc would be impossable.

Just click on the start button and the program menu pops up. There's a search box with the words "start search". Just type whatever u need to find in it, press enter and very likely you'll find what you need. It can't get any simpler than that. That's one of the features of Vista, an integrated search function. It searches for every shit that's in your comp, progs, files, etc. Before any of u guys start to diss Vista, at least try to understand how to use the damn os. I keep hearing "Vista sucks because it sucks, because everyone else says it sucks, so I'm not going to try it because it sucks" That reason just sucks. The OS is different from its predecessor, of course you need to relearn stuff. Learn how to use it first, then diss it because it's just too troublesome to do stuff. I'm no Vista lover but XP or not, they're all Micro$hit stuff. At least I'm comfortable with Vista now. In fact I used to love using XP, tweaking it for the fastest pc experience but now I've completely forgotten about it. Just wait for Windows 7. Then again, it's just Vista with some wrongs righted. XP users might not want to use it, but does anyone use Windows 95 now anyway? Anyway here's a little guide on using Vista. It's not for everyone though, because it ain't little. Hundreds of pages on how to use it. Might be handy for those who are patient to read it. www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

Cool write up for sure, and I may take some more time to bugger with my friends comp. I still like Macs better, but its only because I love the ease of use.

AVG Free edition is a fine anti virus/spyware protection. for the more serious shit, use Hitman Pro 3 (not free) but very good.
