Jesus.
You went in once already, right? So they're at least paying for this?

Fuck they can. Work without pay is terribly illegal. If you know an attourney, convince him to send a letter to the store, see what happens.

Ah, the lovely arrangements of corporations and franchises... wherein the right hand never has a friggin' clue what the left hand is doing. Sorry to hear about the job falling through. Hang in there and keep shopping the job market.

I worked for Taco Bell for 3 1/2 years during high school from '94 -'97. I can't believe I was there that long. I hope you find something better. I'm sorry they did that to you. The food might be good, but I don't really eat there since I left. It reminds me of all the lazy managers I used to work with. In my opinion they are one of the sorriest companies ever.
I think the only positive things I got from Taco Bell was a paycheck, and I didn't get held at gunpoint like at the next job I took.

Attourneys will write letters for free, if they know you, I've found.

Straight to manager? Congrats! On the "VERY good chance," that is. I hope it pans out better than Taco Smell.

Should this fall through, perhaps you should suggest facing the weakest employee in gladitorial combat for his job? You're handy with a trident, right?

I've got a new topic for this complaining thread: school violence. I go to Virginia Tech, which you may or may not have already heard about today. We had two shooting incidents this morning in which 22 are already confirmed dead and 28 wounded. We had a manhunt for an escaped criminial who went on to kill two officers on the first day of school last semester (Fall '06). And in the past two weeks we've had two bomb threats that have closed large parts of campus, and I had to evacuate from the lab where I was working on my thesis project.
I just don't know what to say about this. It's crazy.

Holy crap, glad to hear you are okay if you actually go there.
Horrible news. ):
How long until video games are blamed for it?

Thankfully, I haven't heard that yet, or the complaints about the right to bear arms. But they'll certainly come, probably before the day is out. (Maybe already, but I haven't heard them.) So far, what I've heard has seemed very reasonable, about how we need to be more observant and responsible about noting the inevitable warning signs. It seems this guy was looking for his girlfriend first at the dorm this morning?

I already had to put up with the arms argument on another forum. Man, I'm only getting bits and pieces here at work, but I'm hearing that there were two separate shootings TWO HOURS apart. Two hours. I'm curious why the situation wasn't stopped very shortly after the first shooting started. Doesn't the campus have some kind of police presence?

Yeah, and at least in my opinion and experience, they are professional and relatively quick to respond. But I am as perplexed as anyone as to why classes remained open after those in charge became aware of the first incident at 7:15. I really don't want to point any fingers, because I know no more than what's being reported on the news. In the past, the university president, Charles Steger, has been good at making quick judgment calls in emergency situations. We've had bomb threats recently, and everyone involved in making things work in an emergency (university authorities, police, parking services, and even the bus service) has been quick to adapt.
My roommate had an 8:00 class, and ended up walking very close to Norris Hall after it had ended, just minutes before the second incident was reported to have occured. I just find it odd that classes were only cancelled after the second incident. Also, the first email the university got out today about the events arrived at my inbox at 9:30, again after the second incident, and it only mentioned the first.
I can understand that an email to the 26,000+ students, in addition to faculty and staff, might take a bit of time to filter through the servers to everyone. And I can appreciate that it takes time to get the order to cancel classes out to everyone, as well. But the fact of the matter is that classes were not cancelled until after the second incident, despite a 2 hour window between the first incident and the second. The university officials needed to make a decision faster, whether that means someone failed to inform them immediately or they twiddled their thumbs in a committee.

Damn- I heard about this at work on the news, and remembered that you attend there, Drakono. Glad to hear you're okay. The death toll on this one is just downright scary so far. Sad as it is, schools really should start putting situations like this in their contingencies and emergency planning if they haven't already. That kind of gap in the communication despite the two hour window is just unacceptable, given the situation.

Ugh. Sorry to hear it, Deuce. Did they at very least give you some kind of severance package or benefits to last a few weeks?
I really hate it when companies pull crap like this on their employees... particularly if they do it without some kind of notice ahead of time. It reeks of unfairness all the way around.

Oh, there's a severance package... all things considered, a reasonably generous one. It's just frustrating. I hate job hunting, and I've been at this place for six years. Know what you mean there. I've been at my company almost six years now, and every year since my first one there, they've had some kind of re-org that's landed me in an affected area. Somehow I keep getting just lucky enough to dodge the severanced positions, but it certainly does nothing for feelings of job security. Still, if you were with a mortgage lender and such, I imagine you've got some pretty marketable skills to work with. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a new job quickly.
