I've been using Windows XP on my computer that I've had since 2002. I am about to get a new PC and I know all of them come with Windows 7. Is is true that you need to get the ultimate version of Windows 7 in order to have Japanese language support? Are any of you playing any Falcom games (or any other Japanese games for that matter) on the basic version of Windows 7 (the english version)? If so, does it display properly?
Also, I read that the xp mode available in the more expensive versions of windows 7 can't access the graphic card directly, so I assume that it isn't really an option for game playing? I'd really appreciate any advice from those of you with windows 7. Thanks!

1. Ultimate is only required if you want to turn your entire OS (the start menu, control panel, etc) to Japanese. It is not required to enable non-unicode Japanese support, which is all you need to play games.
2. Yeah, I've tried a bunch of Falcom games (Origin, Sora no Kiseki) on Windows 7 Home Premium and they work just peachy. The only problem I've heard of, and hopefully someone will elaborate on, is Ys I & II Complete, which apparently has issues. I don't own that though so can't comment there.
3. XP Mode is basically irrelevant for gaming, yeah. Tried the old Legend of Heroes games (3 or 5, can't remember which I tried) and sure enough, won't even start.

You don't NEED Win7 Ultimate. In terms of multilingual support, Ultimate allows you to switch your user interface into whatever language you want. Otherwise, I'm certain that Home and Professional have what you need and that's that ability to display text in their native languages (re: Japanese text).
I didn't read up much on the virtual XP but I if you have a copy of XP lying around, I suggest that you do a dual boot instead so you have access to the true XP environment as well as Windows 7.
Edit: Damn you, Varion! *shakes fist*

Well, all I can say is that a lot of people having many problems trying to run many Falcom games, many of which are also not solved.
Windows 7 appears to at least be better than Vista, but it certainly has even greater incompatibility with past games. I, personally, due that, won't ever really make my PCs run under Windows 7.

I dunno, I use Vista, and I have yet to have any trouble with any Falcom game, past OR present. From what I've read on these boards, it sounds like Win7 actually has a worse track record for Falcom games than Vista! -Tom You hear lies and deceit. They work fine.

I can't help but wonder if that isn't because more people are using 7 than ever used Vista, lol. Windows 7 is literally just Vista SP3 with a new interface anyway.
