Hey-yo everyone, I've just registered an account here, though I've been wondering around the forums for about a year and a half now, or something like that. I really like the Ys series, though that seems to go with just about everyone in this forum. Also thanks to this forum, I'm also curious about this Sora no Kiseki series I've been hearing about, but don't know where to start in the series, so if anyone can tell me more, that would be great. Also, my currently owned Ys games for anyone who's curious: Ys: Books I & II (Wii VC) Legacy of Ys: Books I & II (NDS) Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES) Ys: Ark of Napishtim (PSP)

Thanks Tom, though I already kind of had the gist of the Ys series. I've been keeping track of the PSP Ys Games, though I didn't know Ys Chonicles was going to be using the bump system, though. There goes any and all hopes of beating it in Nightmare difficulty.... Also, even though I've said I've owned those four games, I've also tried and beaten Ys IV: Mask of the Sun & Ys: Origin, am currently playing Ys Complete for the PC, and is waiting for the English Translation of Ys Origin so I can beat it again and understand it too. Also, I wish the English Translation of Ys V would be done, as iffy as it sounds, I want to play it so I can say I've played all Ys Games. Though I'm playing them in Chronological order, so after Ys V comes Ys VI, which I haven't even played yet. Heck, I only bought it off of Ebay and is waiting for it to come in the mail. Also, thanks very much for the info on Sora no Kiseki/Legend of Heroes. I think I'll just start from the first then if they are all stand-alones.

Yeah, I've heard about the ridiculous loading times of the PSP version, though I don't think they'll bother me that much, after all, I've tackled Sonic '06 In any case, I'm planing on getting the PS2 version as well, mostly for the challenge mode and other extras. Regarding, Ys IV, I wouldn't mind trying the TurboDuo version. heck, I might play the TurboDuo Version of Ys III as I've heard the soundtrack and I think the graphics is better in that version. Fine, I suppose I could play Ys VI and eventually Ys VII when it comes out, before the never coming out transation of Ys V, but I still want to play Ys V to widen my Ys Experience, no matter how horrible or ok it may seem.

though the soundtrack IS generally considered the best outside of Oath in Felghana, even if I personally consider it the worst. The worst in the Ys series? or just the worst of Ys III in general?

Speaking of Ys IV, I not sure if it's a no-no to talk about this kinda thing on this forum so excuse me for bringing it up if it is, but what emulator should I go and use if I any hope of playing the PCE version of Ys IV? I've been experimenting with a lot of different emulators with no chance at all in getting the game to work, as is the case with me and any CD based emulator. :S
Again, I'm sorry for bringing this up if this is a no-no sort of thing on this forum.

I'm kinda shocked that no one's replied yet to defend it. That's because I wasn't here to defend it. Personally, I recommend the PS2 version. It's closer to Napishtim -- which everyone seems to want, and it's overall much better than the SNES version. Don't get me wrong though, the SNES version is still my favorite above Napishtim. Orchestral chiptunes are the best, by the way -- and yeah, while I wouldn't recommend the boss themes, the area themes are some of my favorites! From Field of Gale, to the Hero of Wind, Felte, Felte Wilderness, the Swamp -- it's all very "action movie-esque". Napishtim, on the other hand, sounds more like a series of 90's commercials and sitcoms. (You know, when 90's commercials and sitcoms were going downhill.) I also could never understand how anyone could like the Ruins of Amnesia, that has to be one of the worst themes in the entire series. As for the gameplay, while you could argue that Adol controls considerably better in Napishtim, I can honestly say that I'm having a lot more fun with Ys V. For my complete thoughts on Ys V PS2, click here.

See, now you're listing some REALLY good tracks! If Ruins of Amnesia sounded anything like those, I'd be happy. Personally, I'll take Ultramarine Deep (that's the one before Amnesia, right? I don't remember the track names off-hand, but that's the one I mean.) over Ruins of Amnesia any day. It's pretty bad though, when Konami's version of that same track (The Art of Evasion) sounds a lot better than the original. The BEST themes of Ys VI are the intro, and all of the boss themes minus the final boss' first form.

Ok, talking about pirating = bad. got it. (not that I really would)
though I'd like to know how one would be able to play the game in english in your method, (and I'm aware that you can understand Japanse to some degree from looking at the Ys Origin Translation Patch here) because as far as I can tell, english patches only work on Roms and PC games. So I'm unable to play the other Ys IV even if I wanted. or at least, if I want to understand what's going on.
In other news, it seems Tom & UM are at it again...>.>

It's just friendly debate, and I hope it doesn't put you off in the least. It's good to see more friendly faces around here. As for Ys IV, nightwolve has plenty of tools which can assist -- to rip Ys IV, translate it, and then you'd use a program like Nero to burn it to a disc. The translation is complete to a point, but nightwolve is still working on the voice dubbing project so people will know what the characters are saying. Otherwise, you'd have to minimize the game and look at the script, or print the script so you won't have to minimize the game. You can find his tools and projects at www.ysutopia.net/ While I'm on it, I must forewarn all this may concern: all open conversation involving/regarding/with the inclusion of nightwolve, should remain in good taste. Thank you.

Yeah, I understand it's all friendly debate. I actually get a good laugh at you two going at it is all.
anyways, no matter what the case, it looks like I need some amount of cash to play Ys IV: DoY, unless I actually do decide to pirate or whatever, which I most likely wont. for now, I'm going to save my cash for the Falcom PSP games that are being localized by XSeed.

That's understandable. We banter like brothers. I admit I've gotten a kick out of it as well; we used to have our share of similarities (and still do) but our tastes have changed somewhat over time.
As unique as this will sound though, I would recommend the SF version as well. It's very much a different game from the PCE version and is universally recognized as the official version of Ys IV. Hudson (?) took some liberties with their telling of the story. As far as gameplay and music are concerned, however, the PCE version wins hands down.
There you have it; I'm the one guy here who has enjoyed Ys I & II DS, Ys III PS2, Ys IV SF, and Ys V SF/PS2. I debate Ys VI sometimes alone, as I ponder why I mostly dislike it, and although not Falcom-related, I also debate Sonic and the Secret Rings, enjoy Sonic '06, and will also debate Secret of Mana (while also contemplating a full-playthrough) openly. ;) I also have a bunch of side-projects relevant to Legend of Xanadu, Faxanadu, and some other potential works yet to be announced.

that's kind of funny, actually. as I enjoy Ys I & II DS (I'm currently playing book II in nightmare Difficulty after finishing said difficulty on Ys I), Ys IV SF, Sonic '06, and Secret of Mana myself. though I personally like Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 more than Secret of Mana, myself.
Also, by side-projects, do you mean play-throughs of sorts? Because I've been thinking of trying a few new games myself and wouldn't mind hearing a few recommendations.

By side-projects, I mean: - Faxanadu Retranslation, Restoration, Remixing and other hacks. - Faxanadu Bestiary- Legend of Xanadu maps. - Game Development projects. As far as Mana goes, Sword of Mana and Legend of Mana are my favorite games in the series. It's also good to see another StH06 fan here. As for recommendations, I would suggest Legend of Xanadu and Xanadu if you like Ys. Unfortunately, the only one of those two that is presently in English is Xanadu. Faxanadu is also pretty good, if you like old-school platformer RPGs ala Zelda II and Battle of Olympus -- though comparatively, Faxanadu is a little less smooth. Tom and I would agree on Gurumin for the PSP (that's one example of a game that needed extra playtime before I could give it a fair assessment). It's very similar in style to games such as Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (one of my personal favorites) for the Nintendo 64, and the Zelda series.

hmmm...Zelda II was kinda iffy for me, I only played it when I was really bored and had a really hard time at it. Looking at Legend of Xanadu, I might try it as it looks interesting. Gurumin looks rather interesting though I'll wait for after I get the Ys and sora no kiseki games for the PSP first, maybe if I have a little extra cash in between.
Ah, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon! I should beat that again once I get my N64 out of storage, though when I start playing my 64 again, I'll prolly be playing DK64 now that I have found a Expansion Pak for it. and searching for an alternative for the Legend of Zelda is how I actually found out about Ys in the first place, actually! XD
what's your standing on mega man and mega man like games? right now, I'm currently playing a mega man like game called Rosenkreuz Stilette, though I'm playing it in Japanese as the english patch keeps erasing the entire game instead of actually, you know, patching it. >.>

I love Megaman and Megaman-likes! I've heard of Rosenkreuz and have been meaning to check it out, but I'll need a job first.

Ok, first. I don't *hate* Zelda II, it's just one play on a rainy day kind of games for me.
Also, speaking of Brandish, I actually own the first game for the SNES XD
I also wouldn't mind trying Xanadu Next, as I LOVE Metroidvania type games, or any game that has exploration and item collection, with the exeption of Cross Edge, that game had TOO MUCH Item Collection as about 90-95% of 100% completion involved item collection and synthesizing. XS
It's kind of funny, Gurumin being $15 as that's about as much money I've spent of Ys VI PSP.
And while Ok, so I can play these games without reading text, it kinda takes away from the atmosphere, kind of like sure, I could play through Ys Origin without knowing what's going on, which I did, even more so if I at least played Ys 1 with the evil ring bit and all, again which I did, but it totally ruins the atmosphere for me.
and yes, I should TOTALLY play all the Falcom games that's obviously a given.
As for Rosenkreuz, I downloaded it of a site, at least for now. I'll buy the real deal when I can. as well as the sequel when it comes out. though like Gurumin, it's only $15 so it's freaking cheap

I don't like Megaman that much, and yet I always check out Megaman-alikes.
Why? At least I pirate them, although I can tell with my future bodes many purchases that would normally be self-induced "trial" periods, XD

You sound like you have pretty good taste in games, so I like you. Welcome and all that.
What's Rosenkreuz, though? Sounds like something I'd enjoy.

Thanks Also Rosenkreuz Stilette, or RKS for short, is a Mega Man clone, and a very good one at that, not to mention hard. (though it's probably hard because I'm a little rusty on my Mega Man skills) If you ask me, the game is probably a little over Mega Man 2 Hard Mode hard. Also, almost the entire cast is female, with one male antagonist, and one mentioned but not seen brother of one of the other characters. Here's the site if your interested, though's it's in Japanese: kurotama.sakura.ne.jp/product/rks/
