I wonder, have you ever played any of the Golvellius games?
They're adventure games for MSX and Sega Master system.
The original game was released for MSX in 1987, and it was never released outside of japan. In 1988 a port was released for Sega Master system, it was very different and greatly improved. It was also released in english in the US and was even released in Europe! I have Golvellius for Sega Master system and the manual is in swedish!
Soon after the Master system release, Compile (creator of these games, and Puyo Puyo, for example) released yet another game for MSX2, people call this Golvellius 2 even though it didn't really have a number after the title. It was using the Master system graphics (slightly modified) and the same music (which was quite a dissapointment). The music in all these games are amazing and, if possible, even better than the music in Ys! It seems like many Ys fans like these games and I am certainly one of them. It's a great series and they deserve to be played by any retro player.

WOW this seems like a really cool game, but the thing it excited me the most is when I entered a cave and saw this circle shaped fellow, the same that appears in another excellent Compile game: The Guardian Legend. The music played there is also similar maybe this is another soundtrack from the great Miyamo Shant, so don't hesitate to check The Guardian Legend for the NES too. I still don't know if this circle shaped guy is some Compile mascot or if there's some connection between Golvellius and The Guardian Legend?

By circle-shaped fellow do you mean the blue ball named Randar ? Randar is a famous series by Compile, there are 3 episodes on MSX. My favourite was Randar 2 I first played Golvellius on msx but I was too young and didnt understand well. I first finished the master system version, and it was one of my favourite game with its great musics and graphics. I remember it took me a month When I was older (like 18 yo), I bought it for like 1$ in a shop and played it asap : I finished it in like 4 hours

Yes, Randar has his own series. And he can be found in both Guardian legend and Golvellius. I wasn't sure about Guardian legend though, but when you say it, I remember some screenshots in a very old magazine, I used to think "That looks like Randar! But it can't be! This is a Nintendo game and Randar is in a Sega game!" I was young at that time and didn't know that Compile was the creator of Golvellius AND Guardian legend. I love Randar....

i love golvellius, it is one of my favorites. about the music being better tha Ysf, maybe. the thing is that current and old(tgfx) Ysf music is in fancy wavs and midis(rearranged in many cases). imo, golvellius had better music than the sega master version of Ys. that is a fair comparison. the intro song of golvellius (sega) is one of my favorite songs ever. so beautiful

Golvellius rules! i played both the msx 1 and 2 versions. the msx 1 version crashed after i took a few steps in the last cave and the msx 2 version crashed somewhere near to the end..i think..you had to enter a tower i think..anyway does anyone have a working rom/disk image for the msx emulator? i've been dying to finish both games for years now.

It'll be in the downloads section eventually. But Golvellius (the USER), did you play the english version? It might be corrupted or something?

ahh.....Golvellius...Love the game. The music especially. I still remember I need to ask my uncle how to finish the game. Mind you my first language is not English, so I had difficulty in playing the game and at that time I only in 5th grade. I really like the music. Can anybody tell me where to get it ?

That's impossible.
There's no soundtrack for this game that I know of. There is the OST of course, recorded directly from the game. It's in a weird format though, I don't know how to open them (they are recorded with an emulator).

It is not, what kind of format is it? Just search google.com for eg. ".exe" and you should find a page explaining what that file is and how you use it.

Dunno. I don't think so. I'll check it when I get home (not). OK, maybe I will. Edit: Now that I think about it, I think I actually deleted that stuff. Oh well.

Huh... Now that's funny. I didn't see this thread earlier and I was literally just talking about Golvellius in one of the other threads as well as over at Nightwolve's place. I guess you all already know about this rockin' series then. : ) It is pretty rockin' and I'm pretty damn addicted to it right now when I still have college work that needs to be done... Blast. I'll have to check out some Golv-mixes sometime since they exist out there. Edit: I just read the whole thread and there was no mention that the MSX versions of Golvellius 1 and 2 were officially released in English by Woomb.net. And Compile still exists in some form or another called "Compile Station / D4 Enterprise" (D4 = The MSX releasers in Japan that are heading the Wii MSX virtual console lineup). So I still would assume that Compile still gains some sort of revenue from the continued sales of the games. Edit 2: The Final Chapter? Shame that J-War's site seems to be down, but I did find one of his Xak 2 remixes which is pretty awesome I must say. I would really like to try and find this guy and listen to some more of his works as well as ask for permission to host his Xak remixes. Edit 3: Wanderers from Edit: www.furykane.com/ seems to be J-War's band. Nice tunes when I visited their site. I'm interested in possibly ordering an album... though I don't speak a word of French to figure it out. Maybe I'll just try my luck with an email in English. : 0 Edit 4: The Dawn of Edit. In case anyone wishes to still find J-War's mixes including the Golvellius title mix, after asking J-War his earlier remixes he pointed out a place on his site that has all of them. jwar.furykane.com/mp3/ In order to download them you need to click the right download arrow at the tail end of the song title. Great mixes. I really like his style. -SkyeWelse

Ahhh, I used to play this game (SMS version) at my cousin's. No way was it ever as good as Ys... even the SMS version of Ys. But I do have some fond memories of this. I guess.

It's weird that I remember getting far in this game, but had no real idea what I was doing. I also took advantage of putting in the example password from the instruction manual that gave you all kinds of weird powers I think.
And then there was Guardian Legend, easily one of the most difficult games I've ever played. I did however manage to beat it eventually.
Peace Out Jest

Ahh, Guardian Legend. I remember how much I wanted Sigma Star Saga (GBA) to be a spiritual successor to GL. Sadly, it wasn't. Not even close.

Man, I remember when I made a Guardian Legend thread here. MP was still using yellow text.
Really, TGL isn't that bad compared to stuff like even Gradius. The fact you get a life bar gives you a lot of leeway compared to other shooters.
