Hello, everybody. My name is Chuplayer, and I'm a rather new fan of the Ys series, but I'm a lifelong fan of video games. Either an Atari 2600 or an Atari 7800 was my first video game system. I'm not sure. I was too young to remember if the 2600 my parents had was still around while I was alive. (I was born in 1985.) I do know it broke. They kept their 2600 games and controllers, though. The day that we got our 7800 is my first memory.
I grew up with the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, etc. No TurboGrafx or Turbo Duo, unfortunately, so no Ys I&II. I never got the SNES or Genesis ports of Ys III, either. But I had lots of fun throughout those years while completely lacking Ys games. I've recently gotten a few older consoles that I missed back when they were new, too. I got an Atari Jaguar and an Atari 5200 in the past year, and I've got my eyes on an AV Famicom and a Turbo Duo.
Nowadays I'm mostly a PC gamer since I built my own killer PC gaming rig in the end of 2009, but I like going back to the older consoles and playing games there. I enjoy restoring my consoles and cartridges to the best of my ability. I have all sorts of security screwdriver bits that I use on my Nintendo stuff. I'm good with the electronics end of things, but I'm terrible with working with wood and plastic. My projects like my Saturn region switch and my PS2 arcade joystick with Happ parts, while fully functional, never make it past the working prototype stage. My Saturn mod is literally six wires that are labeled, and the switch is a couple alligator clip wires and a chart that I use as a guide However, I can totally handle a Turbo Duo cap job.
I do have a Canon Powershot camera that can do video, so I've been making (bad) videos about video games. I call it Unscripted Stuff because I don't really plan what I'm going to do all that much, and I have no budget in production values. All of the budget goes to the gaming paraphernalia. It's on Youtube. www.youtube.com/user/unscriptedstuff I'm probably the least watched video game show on Youtube, but I don't mind Keep an eye out for an Ys video in the near future.
My story with Ys is a rather long and mostly uneventful one. Way back in the early 90s, I saw the Turbo stuff in the JC Penney and Macy's Christmas catalogs. I wanted a TurboGrafx 16 and CD or a Duo so badly. They looked like they were on the cutting edge of technology at the time. On those pages in the catalogs were little blurbs for many games. One of them was Ys I&II. Based on that little blurb, it became a huge adventure in my mind. However, it was only for those few years that I even thought about Ys. When the Turbo stuff disappeared from the catalogs, I stopped thinking about Ys for many, many years. I had a few brief flings with Ys and emulation in the early 2000s, but it wasn't until I got Ys I&II on the Wii Virtual Console that I really opened up to the series. I played it after watching a Classic Game Room video from last year's E3 on Youtube. It was a sit-down feature from the floor of E3 with the guy from CGR and the man who I later found out was Wyrdwad. After that, I bought Ys Seven and Oath in Felghana. I held off on Seven until just a week ago. I wanted to play OiF and AoN first. I've been completely hooked ever since, and even now, I eagerly await the completion of this post so I can go play some more Ys Seven After I beat the upcoming PSP remake of I&II, I plan on playing Mask of the Sun.
Outside of gaming, I'm a rather big heavy metal fan. Mostly the 80s hair metal stuff. You know the music from Ferrari F355 Challenge on the Dreamcast? I love it! And of course some of the very metal songs in the Ys series! I especially like the Ys Origin version of Termination. I've favorited it on Youtube. My favorite bands are Motley Crue and Helloween.
You're probably not going to see much of it here, but I'm also a collector of fashion dolls. There's a whole niche that I'm into that is so much more than your little sister's Barbie dolls, but I'm not going to get into it right now. Unfortunately, my fashion doll hobby sometimes conflicts with my video gaming hobby But you'll see how Ys and my dolls can coexist in another thread of mine.
Well, that's my story. I love the boards from what I've lurked through so far, and I'm glad to now be a part of it!
