I love games like Castlevania - Symphony of the Night, Metroid (first three games), Castlevania (Game Boy Advance) and Maze of Galious. I want more of the same type of games. It has to be 2D, not 3D. Any ideas?

We have the same taste, apparently, since you're listing some of my favorite games ever. Anyway, my brother is going to be mad at me for recommending this, since it is he who likes it, and not me. But Eternal Daughter for PC (freeware) is apparently a game in the same style. I advice you to try it out. You should also try the Metroid Prime games, they seem boring at first, but it's really the same kind of game, but in 3D. It's a great series, I tell you. The GBA Metroid game, Metroid Fusion, is good too.

Similar games are Demon's Crest (SNES), Super Adventure Island II (SNES), Adventure Island IV (FC), And some adventure/action-rpg games: Zelda II -Adv. of Link- (NES), Battle of Olympus (NES), Faxanadu (NES), Castlevania II -Simon's Quest- (NES) etc, etc.

I know what you mean by Metroid Prime seems boring at first. I have tried to play it for some minutes, but I missed the 2D-environment. Still I have been thinking of buying it. I found a copy of the original version (that is, not Player's choice) for 299 Swedish crowns in a local Siba store. Perhaps I should go and see if it's still there. I will try Metroid Fusion too.

I like them all a lot. The only Adventure Island game I've played is Super Adventure Island (of course I've also played the Wonder Boy games), so I will give Super Adventure Island II a try. I have heard it's a great adventure game. I will try Adventure Island IV too. It was never translated to english, I guess? I haven't tried Demon's Crest, although I have read about it. It looks very nice. It's somewhat connected to Gargoyle's Quest, isn't it? Thanks for your help!

I do agree that Super Adventure Island 2 (not released in Europe, I think) is a good game, but it's not in the same style as Castlevania and Metroid. It is almost identical to Wonder Boy in Monster World for Sega Mega Drive. Same goes for Takashi meijin no boukenjima 4 (Adventure island 4) which was never released outside of Japan. 300 SEK, well, you can find it on www.tradera.com for a lot less, but that is not a new game of course. 300 sounds fair for a new copy. I don't recommend Demon's Crest.

Those Adventure Island games I mentioned are not similar to Castlevania or Metroid in topic or mood but they are on gameplay elements (go back and forth levels accessing new areas with the new items you find). Demon's Crest is somehow connected to Gargoyles Quest, but this one doesn't have RPG elements like dialogues and towns like the NES game. Oh, and I'm sorry but I do recommend it

Don't forget about Metroid: Zero Mission. I assure you, it really is way more than merely a remake of the original. The fact that there is a remake buried in there is simply an added bonus. I personally enjoyed it a lot more than Metroid: Fusion...but of course, I did like Fusion as well. Really, it's hard for a game like that to suck, you know. Hell, I even liked Harmony of Dissonance, though when choosing which metroidvania to replay, I usually find it difficult to pick that one up when it's sitting in my collection right next to the far superior Aria of Sorrow. Also, I know you said "no 3d", but I can't help bringing up Lament of Innocence. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it was too short. If the feel is what you're after, it retained the feel better than Metroid Prime did (though that's also an incredible game as well). Also, Demon's Crest is pretty cool...but you have to know how to play it! To fully enjoy the game, you can't just go to the last stage as soon as it's available. There are tons of hidden gadgets and levels you have to conquer if you want to unlock the elusive "ultimate crest". Really, it's more than meets the eye, I promise, though it's certainly no competition for Symphony of the Night (which I'm playing the Saturn version of right now). Eternal Daughter is quite impressive for a freeware game. It's really REALLY hard though. There's another freeware game I can recommend, which is...KIND of like a metroidvania, but it's more linear and quite short. Still, it's a fun little title. Akuji the Demon! Follow the instructions here to get it: nyuu.cellosoft.com/projects/akuji/

Actually I've only played Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance. It's quite hard to get hold of an original copy of Aria of Sorrow. I keep looking and all I'm able to find is the cheap Hong-Kong version. I hope I will be able to play Lament of Innocence. Right now I only have the Japanese (limited edition) version, and the problem is I have yet to buy a modified Playstation2. Akuji the Demon looks fun. I will try it. Thanks for your advice.

About the Maze of Galious: Have you played its unofficial remake, made by Brain Games? No, I haven't played it. If I remember correctly I read something about the music being completely different in this remake. I love the music from the original, so I don't like the idea of completely new music. Have you played the remake? Is it worth giving it a try?

A little tip. They sell Metroid Fusion for only 199 SEK at www.webhallen.com. It's really worth the money, too bad the shipping is insanely expensive.
