I can't offer any advice because I've never tried it myself, but I hope somebody works it out because an ALoY VM tournament would totally rule ^^~

Vantage Master is a strategy game, isn't it? I've never played it, but I could definitely get behind (and into) a tournament. (Yes, those two DO usually go together ) What would be der prize?

Umm... respect? *thinks a bit harder* Custom title? (Would have to OK with MP83) *thinks some more* Entry costs 1USD per person, winner gets the total in a Play-Asia voucher? (Would also have to OK with MP83)

Yep they were serious, I think it'd be fun to do something like that. Not too sure how we could track the tournament... does the game allow for custom player names in vs mode? Maybe a screenshot from both parties at the beginning and end to confirm who was playing and who won? Stream/record the whole match (may be a problem for some people though)?
*goes to find some of these things out*

This is going to sound very lazy ('cause it is!), but that sounds like a lot of work. . .

Well it turns out you can have both a custom personal name and a session name too so that's something... I'm just thinking aloud at the moment, feel free to ignore me ^^~

I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work... I haven't played VMO, but that's basically how the Internet works. You'll have trouble if the host is behind a NAT router (more likely than not these days, but not so much when the game came out), though. You might be able to get around the NAT issue with something like Hamachi. (Use unmanaged mode, have one person create a network and invite the other to join it, have one person host the VMO game, and have the other put in the host's Hamachi IP address -- the one beginning with "5." -- to start playing. Leave/delete the Hamachi network when you're done playing.) I haven't used Hamachi (or played VMO online), so I can't offer any advice beyond that, but it seems like it should work in theory. (If you're using the Windows firewall, you have to let Hamachi and VMO through it if it asks.) [Edit] If you can't connect and want to see if using Hamachi helps, this guide may be useful.

Actually, there's another way besides using hamachi. It's DMZ setting. You have to know the password of your router though. Besides, it's not safe since your computer would be exposed to outside internet.
Almost all VM players i know use hamachi to play. It's very convinient and very easy to use.

I remember I had no difficulty playing VMO or VMJ back in the days. There was a japanese website were players would come to play tournaments. You just have to click here to find some useful informations : fiddle.kir.jp/vm/trial00.htm ^^ I remember they prefer meeting on the falcom chatroom than using IRC or MSN ^o^;; I still have a few players marked as vm tournament players on my trillian account... Maybe someone can create an english website like this one ?

Mostly the room is empty though. yu_neria is the ONLY ONE of those tournament players who is still playing. He usually appears on that IRC channel on weekends. He's also regarded as the best Japanese player, since he usually got champion in tournaments. It's really very difficult to find any players now even in Japan. Chinese has a VM QQ group(4393663) which has over 100 members. But few of them are active.
