Knowing how some of you, and even perhaps many or all of you, have heard of Valis, I decided to put this here to end pretty much the suffering of all Valis fans out there:
I, Heroman, the Creator of The Valis Challenge, will hereby present the first person to find a way to reach the final levels and conquer Rogles in the Famicom/NES version of Valis released in 1987 (I believe that is the correct year) and post how it is done either here or through PM, subject to verification by my personal attempts in addition to a required set of screenshots, with money equivalent to $25 US.
In case you didn't know, the original Valis appeared on the Famicom as well, but to my knowledge, has never been beaten. I have searched endlessly on Google for FAQs and endings, but to no avail. I'm tired of trying to figure it out by going all over the place and dying and finding nothing. FYI, I lost my furthest file when my last computer crashed, but I did defeat Reiko and the other bosses. There was nothing left for me to do but to find Rogles and beat him. I'd also like to note, for those of you who can't read it, the game is almost entirely in Japanese, with only a few words here and there in English (at least with the version of the ROM I downloaded). I will also provide the means to enter this challenge if requested through e-mail. Please note, however, that any hacking of the game, the file, etc. is used, the entry is void and the prize nulled. If you're not entering, feel free to hack away, as I'd really like to know how to beat it. ^^"
Also, if you've already beaten the game, you don't get the $25, but I'd be more than happy to Exalt you for the next week and a half or so if you told me how.

I've never played Valis, but I've read the Hardcore Gaming article, and the Famicom version sounds a little too much like the NES version of Renegade.

This is only a Famicom Rom. There shouldnt be that much trouble finding a place on the net that has it. I have only played the original Valis for Genesis and Turbo Duo Super CD. Both games were tough. I think I got to the end boss Rogles in the Turbo version and couldnt get past the forest in the Genesis version. Anyhow, here is a link to get the Famicom rom. <link to russian roms site removed> Edit: I believe that Seldane said that nobody knows where to get this game.

hmm i could try and its not for cash, just for fun but ehem... where can i download this game ? and what game this Valis is ? Nobody here knows where you can download it. Nobody. You don't have to be lazy and could Google it yourself. I just want to get this game finally finished, being a fan of the series and all. I don't care who does it, but I want to know how to get to the final levels and such. So...yeah. That's all I want here. And if you're gonna ask where, know how to do it in private, because publicly asking for ROMs is against many boards' TOS policies. Also, for the record, releasing links to and providing ROMs through PMs or board posts is also against TOS, but I don't believe offering to reveal locations or to provide ROMs via post or PM is against them. Only if links are actually provided or the ROMs are given through the board services are boards shut down or members banned. So for your safety, viljar, I'd suggest editing your post a little. Just a small suggestion. And zeomare1, there is no real "boss" to the first level, if that's what you mean. What you do is you defeat the two kinda brownish creatures in the alleyway-ish places and then go to a dead-end on another part of the level and you'll find a motorcycle-looking enemy. Beat that, then walk into the former dead-end, and you'll get the Valis suit and go into the Dream and Dark Worlds. If that doesn't make sense, I'll try to make a map and send it via e-mail, if possible. EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention, this topic isn't to discuss where to find ROMs or how to get them, it's to discuss a contest and, more specifically, how to beat a certain game. So I will personally ask that this topic be closed if more public discussion of the ROM happens beyond this post. Discuss ONLY the game, issues with gameplay, how to beat it, etc. Yes, I may sound crazy, but I'm not about to get banned from a board I more or less want to enjoy for a while to come, nor will I cause myself or any group of people to cause the board to get closed. So...yeah. Leave this topic to contest and game discussion ONLY. Please. Thank you.

Then I noticed arrows appearing underneath Yuko at certain spots. If you ever wish to continue the game, zeomare1, then slow down every once in a while and check the ground underneath for arrows. Once you figure your way around, though, it gets a lot easier. You have to play it a while, though, to do that, so...yeah. ^^"

No, I haven't. This is a list of all versions I've played ever:
Valis (Famicom/NES) Valis (Genesis) Syd of Valis (Genesis) Valis III (Genesis)
That's it. Short list, I know, but...yeah. I've researched the series' storyline, so I know what's going on in all of them, but it's just the gameplay and such. I'll have to find a way to play the x68000 version of it, though...

the x68000 version is different from the others that are out the stages and bosses are unfamiliar to me. the controls are horrible you have to push up to jump almost similar to a fighting game, but for a adventure game it is miserable. you should really consider trying out the PC Engine versions the are quite good.

I apologize if a bumping of a 2 1/2 year thread is against the rules, but I came to notice this thread out of the blue and decided to share a couple cents on beating Valis for NES.
In fact, I needed the translation patch to figure that out. After I did, I realized how much of an idiot I was.
If many get stuck in this game to the point you end up dropping it entirely, it probably is because you get the Valis Sword, but can't use it worth anything... and ya can't enter the palace (with the 2 skeles guarding it).
SPOILER ALERT! When you get the sword, you are considered 'cursed' and must 'wash it off' at the spring water before you can use it and tackle Rogles. How to do this? In the Forest area, there's that one place with the hopping things that jump erratically, the one building with a guy that says some stuff, and the water pit to the right. All you have to do is talk to that guy, then step up to the water (of course, not falling in!). I forget the location of this, but I believe its to the north side. Once ya do that, Valis is unlocked and the once-blocked palace will be open.
Also to note: you will encounter a guy in the palace top floor that won't cooperate. Talk to him until you get the .... and you can continue to fight Rogles from there. I think it takes about 6 visits to get him to let you continue. Just incase you get stuck at this part. Other than that, those are the only two points in the game you will get stuck in unless you can read japanese or found a translation.

Not like anyone's interested (except maybe one guy). Wow nice. I recently bought the Mega Drive Version, but Famicom appears to be a whole different game. I'll watch it again at home though (need sound!) (p.s. am I the one guy now? )

I created an english translation for this game with satsu last year. I'd played the game over the years on and off, and could never get past the city. I thought this was due to not understanding something being said (Like the monster and Cat rooms), but as I did the translation it just dawned on me that the game is very badly designed. It actually chapped my ass so much that I did a "localized" version of the game (Called Valis++), released at the same time the standard translation was put out. This is a list of the programming changes Valis++ incorporates: Half damage. 10 hits normally, 20 with the Shield. Blinking exit markers for down *and up* exits. No more running past so many poorly indicated pathways. You always have a map of the current area, called by Select. Not only that, but the maps have all the exits numbered to indicate where they connect to each other, and some points of interest marked (The three bosses in The City, the Desert boundary in the Ruins, etc). Both can be downloaded in the form of IPS patches at my homepage, here: panicus.googlepages.com/games
