I've been wanting to replay Ys 3, but not OiF. I'm in a real retro bind.
Do I use the Genesis version, or is there one better that is in English?

Deuce once said the SNES version had the best translation out of the localized Ys IIIs. Though he translated Ys III for Famicom himself, as well, and a patch was made for that. So I think these two would be your best bet.

Hmm. I'll go with Genesis then. I'll be able to put that on my PSP and go with it. And Ys 3 was on the Famicom?

Yep, and to really blow your mind it came out after the SFC version.

Huh, I didn't know that. XD
What also makes it further funnier is that both the FC and SFC versions were done by the same company (under different labels).

What also makes it further funnier is that both the FC and SFC versions were done by the same company (under different labels). Huh? Victor (Ys III FC) and Tonkinhouse (Ys III SFC) are related? This is news to me. ... To be honest, better not quote me on that... I could very well be mistaken, for some reason. Hm, were the guys who released Ys III FC the same ones who released Ys I FC and Ys II FC?

I love that! The only other time I've heard anything close to it is on the Ys III JDK Special.
If anyone hasn't listened to that arrangement you can hear it at 3:15 in this video
I wish the Mask of the Sun music sounded like the Ys III SFC music.

I personally prefer the Genesis soundtrack over the SNES one. More oomph compared to the SNES version. I dunno, I just really like the SNES synth for that game. It's objectively terrible, but it has such a distinctive, awesome sound to it, IMHO. Plus, the SNES has some tracks that are found in no other version of Ys III, all of which I think are really awesome (particularly the new ending theme, which I honestly prefer to Wanderers From Ys by quite a bit). And the existing tracks all have really cool little flairs to them that aren't found in other versions -- like the all-bass intro to Illburns Ruins, the heightened focus on the background melody in Elderm Mountains, and the totally rad trumpet fanfare in Seal of Time. -Tom This. Awesome music, everything else kinda sucks, particularly the proverbially bad voice acting if you're playing in English. Sadly, it's not even Symphony of the Night awesome bad acting, it's just bad.

Well, I might replay Ys 3 on all the platforms. With Sega first.
I can play that on my PSP, then play SNES off my PC, then TG16/CD off my PC.
Unless I can buy it for a -REASONABLE- price, of course. (( TG-16. ))

SNES: The SNES version of Ys III for me leaves much to be desired. It isn't well balanced in terms of gameplay/difficulty and also the details of presentation (graphics, music) are made with some reluctance.
Genesis: It's the most balanced of the three consoles versions for 16-bit either for the graphics (it has a great design by the people of RIOT/Telenet), sound (the music is very similar to Falcom's original synth) and gameplay (not only plays well, but balances the difficulty better than the PC Engine CD (which is more affordable) and the SNES (which is disproportionately more difficult)).
PC Engine CD: The PC Engine CD has very good cutscenes in the intro and the end (with the style of Ys Book I & II, still a little weaker than the stunning scenes of Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys), and it is better musically because apart from being in Redbook audio, it has a freaking awesome tracks arranged by that monster named Ryo Yonemitsu. Unfortunately, is slower and it has a pretty bad scroll, especially noticeable in scenarios such as Redmont (the poor PC Engine could not handle well the multi-planes), and graphically, despite having more colors on screen, IMO it isn't so well designed like the Mega Drive version.

Going through my old boxes, I found a copy of Ys 3 SNES. So I'll see if it works next time I go to my buddies house (( He has a working SNES )). For now though... SEGA

I liked SotN's VA. Hence, awesome bad acting. You can't say with a straight face that the dialogue is anything but B-movie level... that's why it's so fun and endlessly quotable.

Original version of Ys III is asking for trouble! I'd go for the PC Engine version any time.
