I'd be glad to find another Ultima player on the boards... that'd be nice, considering I've been very hard-pressed to find someone who I can strike up casual conversation with about Ultima for a very long time. >_> And I, sadly, don't accept people that only played Ultima Online as having experience with the Ultima series, just as I barely accept people only having played Ascension(and no other Ultima games) as having experience. So... those of you that have played some Ultima games, which is your favorite? Just to spare someone's effort in asking me what mine is, if they were to, mine's definitely The Black Gate, with The False Prophet behind by a little bit... Serpent Isle was a bit strange for me, and I didn't like it as much as those two games.

The series almost took a 180 degree turn after Warriors of Destiny. VI was... a massive game. Everything was on the same scale, there wasn't a "world map", and enemies took up more than one square at a time.
Though, the only NES version that was comparable to the PC one was indeed Quest of the Avatar. Great game.
VII, however... in my opinion, is one of the greatest games of all time.

Ultima! Ultima! Ultima!!
Oh oh oh. Ultimas 3 - 7 were bRiLlIaNt!! Ultima 4... the whole concept of trying to reach avatarhood was one of the most innovative gameplay experiences ever! But I think my favorite was the Complete Ultima VII, this includes The Black Gate, the Forge of Virtue, the Serpent Isle, and the Silver Seed.
The scale! The size! The enormity! The complexity! The FUUUUUN!!
Woo!
The Complete Ultima Collection (all 8 games on one disc) was probably the greatest PC-related gaming purchase I've ever made. This came out a bit before U9, btw, which is why it wasn't included!

I've played Ultima I, II, III, IV, V and VI. I like Ultima II and III the most. I love the graphics in both games, but I never played them that much, actually. So I've got nothing to contribute to this discussion. Although, this thread has made me want to play Ultima III entirely.. Ooohh....

Ultima III was called Ultima Exodus on the NES, and was a surprisingly faithful rendition with surprisingly good music. The PC original didn't feature much in the way of music, IIRC, and the graphics were quite different too!
No way in HELL am I selling any of my Ultima collection. Very sorry. I buy, play, and collect games. I never sell them off or trade them back unless they are truly terrible AND have no place in my collection!

Well, missing out on a truckload of crappy games does little to assuage us when a gem passes by without getting localized. And, in all honestly, there are plenty of good - great games that just don't come out here in the West, that should.

Where do you live? I mean what country? Also, U7 is very much a DOS game, and you'll really need to be up to speed in memory managers and allocation to get it to run with sound and everything. I remember that configuring a special boot-up discs for it was very much a pain in the butt! Edit - Well, if you're into eBay, you can get a complete set (disc, box, atlus, manual, etc) of the Ultima Collection (U0-U8, including all expansions and whatnot) here, for about $70. Expensive, but rare. Proving a bit tougher to find the CD version of Complete U7 (which includes all 4 parts. Avoid the floppies.) eBay LinkBottom of the page. eBay Stores section. Two up for sale, apparently.

You can run DOS programs quite nicely using DOSbox and the classy D-Fend frontend.

I thought I read that U7 did not run in DOSBox, but I never tested it myself.

That's absolutely awesome. I'll try to get it running this weekend.
If I can get it running with full sound, oh my g-d, I'll be in heaven...
I tried running it under the Exult engine some time ago, but they game is totally broken. Sure, it works, but it rips the heart and soul right out of the experience.

Actually, that's the beauty of DOSbox. Many DOS games had trouble getting full sound, EVEN THOUGH you had a soundcard that supported it. This is not the case with DOSbox. Everything seems to work out perfectly, which is nice.

The gameboy got those "Runes of Virtue" spin offs, which were terrible. And Ascension. Ugh. It was barely an Ultima. More a bare-bones Tomb Raider game with very light RPG elements.
If you have played at least 2 or 3 of older games, such as III, IV, V, VI, or VII, then you haven't played Ultima. Not really.

Ultima VII was hardly "8bit". They tried porting it to the SNES, a rather powerful (if not speedy) 16bit console and failed miserably.
