Because it wasn't really meant for the consoles, ESPECIALLY that game. And I want to play it right now, but I can't... ;-;

Shinod7 apparently requires a FAT partition? (And mastery of the French language?)
Neither applies, in my case. ;p

Well, it wasn't really that the SNES couldn't do it(they could emulate it close to perfectly with the SNES mouse), it's just that it wouldn't work very well on a console, as it was originally a PC game that relied almost exclusively on a mouse and the rest on a keyboard.

Oh, the SNES version of Ultima VII could definitely have been streamlined better. As is, they streamlined it too much, turning it into much more of a (bad) action game, sadly.

Whoa... I've been gone too long. At any rate, I -LOVE- Ultima. Behind Ys and Quest for Glory, it's my favorite RPG series. Ultima 7 is everything the Elder Scrolls series wishes it was. Speaking of Ultima 7, if you're having problems running it, use this. exult.sourceforge.net/Ports the game engine to Windows 9x/XP. The game runs even better than it did under DOS. Has anybody but me played the Ultima Underworld games? Awesome spin-off, maybe even better than the Ultima series proper.

I'm so unlucky, I can't find my Ultima Collection CD anywhere. I could install Ultima IX: Ascension if I wasn't so lazy. Goodness, that game had one of the best scenes ever, if you know what I'm talking about. Since I'm as clueless in Ultima as in Ys, could anyone tell me which game ditched the party system?

I didn't like Exult. It isn't a port as much as it is a... loose approximation of what U7 really should be.

I didn't like Exult. It isn't a port as much as it is a... loose approximation of what U7 really should be. In Exult's defense, it's not quite finished yet. But it's a lot more stable than the original game was under DOS (I remember it crashing constantly on my old 486), and the only feature I can find that's still missing is drunkeness. Maybe because I'm not trying too hard to find problems with it. And it's still better than running U7 under an emulator. Brocksketchum, Ultima 7 Part 2 was the last Ultima game with a party system. Also, it was the last good Ultima game, IMO.

I haven't tried Exult in about a year, and nothing really worked right. Pathfinding and combat were totally gimped, there was no penalty for theft (townsfolk never noticed it), it was just a pale shadow of U7. Has it improved much?

Quite a bit. Towns people react to robbery by calling the guards on you now (though they don't seem as persistant as in the original game, I remember being chased from Trisinic all the way to Vesper once). Pathfinding is better, but still not perfect, and the combat engine is actually slighty enhanced from the original game; you can see real time stats for all your party members and there are pop up damage numbers as well.
It's much better than it was, even if you still can't get wasted. Give it another shot.

Whoa, Ys fans and Ultima fans, you guys rock like few others. Ultima VII 1 and 2 were absolutely amazing. I do have to say though that as imperfect as it was UVIII was a great game, cool world, great atmosphere, and the Avatar alone for the first time since Ultima 2. Still, it was rushed, and the expansion never came out, but I loved it. The soundtrack was incredible too.
Also, give UO some love, yeah its an MMO, but the attention to detail in setting up Britannia was amazing, the town design was great, and the soundtrack also very much rocked. Still, I wish they would have used that engine to make UIX, but what are you going to do?
Still, Ultima holds a special place in my heart if for anything showing me that the Japanese aren't the only ones who make great RPGs.

I'm a big Ultima fan I must admit. It was the first RPG series I really got into by playing number 3, 4 and 5 on a school Apple II computer. Ultima V was the one that really wowed me and I got it as soon as it came out and played it for months. The achievements that game managed on the archaic AII hardware are really quite amazing.
Anyway, I'm also a fan of Ultima VIII. I think it was just too different than the previous titles and might have been better as a spin-off title rather than a main title. I also think it would have been, of all the Ultima titles, the best fodder for a console version. It already feels a bit like an action/adventure game.
Still, there have been some decent console Ultima titles. Ultima VII for the SNES suffers mostly because the original would have been about 160Mbs and the SNES version was 8. Just a bit of a hit there. Not to mention the SNES didn't have the processing power. The same problem was suffered by Ultima: Quest of the Avatar and Ultima: Warriors of Destiny on the NES; especially the latter. Ultima: Exodus on the other hand is a solid port.
Ultima IV on the SMS is my favorite version of the game - not only is it a perfect port but it's enhanced a bit as well. If I was to recommend an old Ultima for a new gamer to try this would probably be it.

What's really nifty for us Ultima fans is that Ultima V: Lazarus is now out, it's a little buggy, but the fans who made this game get mad props. Holy crap, this total conversion of Dungeon Siege is just amazing, everything from the music, to the character portraits, to well, everything about it is just great. considering that Ultima V is one of the ones I never completed I am loving this look at what UIX should have been. Check it out at The Lazarus Website
