I've been thinking about getting this game for PS2,
It looks like a good game and the gameplay looks improved.
What do you think?

Yeah, I played it for a few hours one day and it's just bad. Castlevania just doesn't come off well in 3D. The character models are bad, the voice acting is worse, and the controls are stiff. If you can get past all that, it's kind of repetitive: the corridors you run through are loooong with sometimes very few enemies in them. So you just spend a lot of time running to the next area.
Please rent it first.

My brother bought it when I turned it down in favor of Shadow of the Colossus. I've been watching him play it. I've read bad things about it, but I thought it looked great. I had to get the soundtrack, (on the way soon) which I thought was pretty good. I agree that Castlevania may just not be cut out for the 3D realm though. Since I didn't buy it myself I won't feel ripped off if it really is a bad game when I play it. You probably should rent it first if possible.

I will definitely buy this game. I don't care if it's good or not. I love Castlevania and I must have 'em all! Moving this thread to Gamer's Realm.

I was watching my brother play again yesterday and I don't think the game can be bad. It just looks too sweet! I really like Lament of Innocence and it's soundtrack too. I bought the Limited Edition for that one. Too many games right now though to stop and play this one.

The only reason I own this pathetic embarassment for is game is because I'm a Castlevania whore and own all of the rest. This game seems better than Lament of Innocence at first, but quickly becomes more broken and unbalanced, all the while sharing many of the same flaws.
Horrible game. Rent before you buy, if must. Otherwise, just skip it and rent something better.

I didn't think this game was terrible but I had a hard time loving it. I like that it breaks from the usual castle and lets you explore more open areas. Unfortunately, the pacing of the action is dismal. As a Castlevania fan, this is a tough one to love. Come on Konami, Metal Gear made an awesome transition to 3D. I know you can do it.

What open areas? Yeah, you can explore a forest and a mountain, but it uses the same exact "square rooms + rectangular corridors" schematic as every other level in the game, with VERY few exceptions. Stages, in this game, are little more than swappable graphic/music skins. A true atrocity in game design, just like its predecessor.
I've seen crappy RPGs with terribly randomized dungeons output more engaging and interesting stage layouts than these two 3D castevanias.

What made them think they'd get away with this? Anyway, the Castlevania games for Nintendo 64 were actually pretty nicely designed. I liked those games, but the controls were too bad.

Its not that great a game. So far I got to the third level and lost interest. the game is not as good as Lament of Innocence.

I liked the N64 ones too, but my friend swears that it is crap. Lament was better than this one I think.

I liked those games, but the controls were too bad. Who knows why they did what they did? LoI, Nanobreaker, CoD. I'm not sure it's so much a design choice as it is evidence of a fundamental inability to design a decent 3D game. The N64 games were handled by completely different teams (IGA had nothing to do with them). I thought for their time the N64 games were pretty good. At the very least, they got the platforming and adventure aspects of a CV game down PAT. And the music was pretty damn good too! The N64 games suffered from bad framerates, slightly awkward controls, and crappy combat. But fundamentally, they were solid 3D games and from a design standpoint, there were good (if not standout), Castlevania titles.

I got both Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness the other day. I haven't tested Curse of Darkness yet, but LoI seems rather.... boring.

Interesting about the double pack, I recommend playing Aria of Sorrow if you haven't. Soma Cruz is a prety cool character. I have to play Dawn of Sorrow to find out what happened after Aria. First I gotta get a DS.

I believe we're the only ones getting the double pack. Those things are extremely common here. Too bad they look like crap.
I guess I will have to buy it. I do have Harmony of Dissonance already, but Aria of Sorrow is extremely expensive here since it's gotten really rare all of a sudden. Damn. I was going to buy it when it was new for some reason.
I want to play Aria of Sorrow before I play Dawn of Sorrow.
