Valkyrie Profile is an awesome game, and the second one is its prequel. I just bought and completed the thing in less than a week. Anyone else play this yet?

I've really been meaning to get my hands on it. It's good to hear another positive review (especially from an Ys fan, so I know your taste can't be all that bad, right?). But I am quite behind on the list of games I want to play.
You say the second is the prequel to the first? Interesting. Would I be able to enjoy the second without having played the first? Because the first (PS version) costs an arm and a leg, and I don't see myself buying it. (I don't have/want a PSP.)

You really don't need to play the first one first to enjoy this game, but to understand everything you would need to eventually play the first game. There are scenes that happen in both games, and you'll say "Ah, I remember that!" or "So that's how that happened!"
So yeah, it would be nice to play the first game eventually, but it isn't required. I do, however suggest getting a psp once prices drop or something. Maverick hunter X is an awesome game, and ofcourse Valkyrie profile is out on it now. However, it 'is' a matter of taste. I personally don't want a DS that much, but I'll probably get one eventually, there are a lot of good games on it that I would like to play.
The first game and the second game plays a bit differently though. In the first game you took the role of Lenneth, and you collected souls and sent them up to train for Ragnarok. In the second game you play as Alicia, a girl who has the Valkyrie Silmeria inside her, and instead of hunting down souls you find them here and there. Also, instead of sending them to train, you just reincarnate them or something. You 'release' them. An awesome game though. The story gets very good towards the end. If you would like I could write up a full review for you.

I wouldn't stop you, but it's not necessary. I'm pretty much sold on trying out Silmeria. But it'll be a little ways off. The semester is getting pretty busy, and I'm still trying to work my way through the first Xenosaga. Then, I'd wanted to play Shadows of the Colossus. I only got my PS2 a couple months ago, but I don't really mind being a little behind -- I get the games for a lot less!

Shadow of the Colossus was pretty cool, I haven't beaten it yet. I started playing other games and stopped playing it. Beautiful game though.

VP2 certainly has a lot of references VP1 fans would enjoy. Especially knowing that "never ending cycle of reincarnation" is at work.
Chapter 6 of VP Lenneth for PSP has a new cinema added when you visit the Lost City of Dipan. Supposedly the A ending does even MORE to tie in to Silmeria's plot.

I have VP for PSP, but as usual, I am a bit unsure about playing it. I heard so many great things I ran out and bought it, but then I hear that there is a lot of timed stuff. For example, you only have so long to build up your heroes, and you can screw yourself over by sending the wrong heroes to fight in Ragnorak. I may play it now that I finished LoH PSP. I need a break before I play LoH 2 PSP because it might be too similar and I don't want to burn myself out on LoH.

VP can certainly be enigmantic at times. Like Freya will ask you for a swordsman that can swim and other things that don't necessarily add up. Getting the "good" ending definitely needs a FAQ or Guide to get.
Believe it or not, but Hard mode is easier than normal. You can get better stats out of your characters by raising them from level 1 as opposed to the levels you get them at in Normal. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but I remember doing that in the PS1 version.
At first, I thought the game was absurdly rigid, but I learned to plan dungeon visits to work within the time periods and such. The learning curve is a little steep, and I really hated the game at first. I began to enjoy the game in chapter 4.

Picked it up, along with Tales of the Abyss. For some reason though, ToA sucked me in more then VP2 did and I haven't managed to get back to VP yet.
With FFXII, NWN2 and Splinter Cell coming out next week, think my gaming schedule is booked up the rest of the year, heh.

If you play VP2, it will be able to enjoy previously playing LENNETH further more. (I am sorry when the English translation is strange. )
