So, anyone else install Dark Alex's newest hybrid firmware onto their PSPs? I just got it done, and damn me if it isn't amazing.
It's a homebrew hyrbrid of the official 1.50 (and all of the kernel-level homebrew it allows) with the official 3.02 firmware (and all of the PS3 remote play and PSOne classics playback functionality IT allows).
It's crazy what Dark Alex does with his homemade firmwares.
Yes, for those that know, this is his follow-up to the equally amazing (yet now obsolete) 2.71 SE custom firmwares...

Cool, I've been anticipating this! Now I just need to find a non-TA-082 ceramic white PSP! Damn them for being so rare. I know you can now downgrade/re-flash the TA-082 PSPs, but it's far too insecure at this time.

I believe that TA-082 downgrader has been proven a fake.
I didn't know that there WERE any non-TA-082 whites!

Aw, just read it on PSPupdates. Too bad it was fake.
That's right. European and early Japanese ceramic white PSPs aren't TA-082 models. European PSPs are too expensive though (about 400 dollars) and the early Japanese models are hard to get ahold of.

Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
Dark Alex is readying 3.02 OE-B, which will include not only the ability to play PSN PSOne downloads on your PSP (as OE Rev A allows). but apparently also the ability to wrap YOUR OWN PSOne ISOs as PSN downloads.
G-d. Imagine it. Being able to rip your own PSOne games and get them to run on the PSN's PSOne emulator Sony so kindly created, without having to wait for Sony to release them via the PSN (and without the need for you to rebuy them)!

I don't think you'll be able to do a straight upgrade (though I could be very wrong on that note). But you CAN revert back to 1.5 from any of Dark Alex's custom firmwares, and of course then upgrade to whatever firmware you'd like. Keep in mind though, that if you have a firmware higher than 2.80, you will not have the ability to install Dark Alex's custom firmwares. Your best bet, then, would be to remain with Dark Alex's custom firmware and use the Devhook homebrew application (which can be run from either 1.50 or 3.02 OE-B) to EMULATE higher firmwares. In such a fashion you'll have the best of both worlds. You'll be able to access pretty much any homebrew you'd want, and roughly 95% of the PSP UMD library. It's what I've been doing for the past two years, and outside of a couple of brief periods where it took a few weeks or a month for Devhook to catch up, I have not been left without the ability to run current games as well. Edit - I've successfully ripped my US copies of Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, Dragon Quest VII, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Final Fantasy IX, so far. I can report that all run at optimal framerates, with decreased loads, with full audio, and at top speed. So far so perfect!

Argh. That is so unfortunate. Still, the 2.80 downgrader was JUST released (it's been a REAL nice Christmas for the PSP homebrew scene), so hopefully they'll figure out 2.81 and/or 2.82 before attempting to tackle 3.0x.
Wouldn't hold my breath though.
Edit - If you're at all interested in this, stop upgrading. At least until we get a clear idea of how feasible cracking 3.0x is going to be.

Question time, gents.
I've seen a lot of firmware talk that went completely over my head, but from what I've heard about this stuff I'm interested seen as I'm gonna have to pick up a PSP in the next few weeks for Gurumin. May as well get some more use out of it, right?
So basically the question is am I going to be able to buy one just like that and it'll be compatible? Or am I going to have to dig out older versions with special firmware versions to use this stuff?
Cheers.

It'll most likely be compatible. As long as the PSP you buy has firmware 2.80 or earlier, it will be compatible.
Avoid 2.81-3.03 firmwares.

What I want to know about this is if it's possible to put all of the Final Fantasy discs together so that you don't have to "swap discs". o.o Sorry. That's impossible. The good thing about having seperate discs is that you don't have to put them all on your memory card at once, the current one is enough. Which is good, because that saves space for games like Ys and Gurumin. You know, the must haves?

There's a pretty good PCE emulator that can play CD-ROM based games as well. The PS1 emulator is flawless because it is official, Sony's got all the knowledge you could ever need in that field since, well, they made both the PS1 and the PSP. It looks like the original authors of the SNES9X port has abandoned their project. Not a good sign.
