Very recently, the first game in the Xak series titled "Xak: The Art of Visual Stage" for MSX2 was officially released in English and licensed through WOOMB.net. I spoke a bit with a representative with their group who told me that they have plans to release the entire MSX2 series, meaning Xak I, Xak II, Xak: Tower of Gazzel and Fray In Magical Adventure. There are currently no plans to release an official version of Xak III at this time however.
I'm hoping that since Woomb.net is affilated with D4, the company behind the MSX game transitions to the Nintendo Wii virtual console line-up in Japan will perhaps means future MSX releases such as the Xak series for the Nintendo WII VC in American and Europe.

I'm drooling over their Compile selection!! That would so rock hard if they distribute these in the US on the Wii, they could get so much more exposure there and since the games were never released here (well, these versions in some cases) and are in English.. big selling point.

Well I do know that one or both of the titles listed as being a first game in the Japanese Nintendo WII Virtual Console Line-up (That's a mouthful. Say that three times fast : ) ) are Aleste and another game that I cannot recall at the moment, but I believe they are ones that have been English translated over Woomb.net. And they are affiliated with D4 so there is a good possibility. I asked them about this possibility of seeing Woomb games over on the U.S./European side of the V.C. line-up, but they conveniently didn't answer it. : )

It'd be nice if Xak 1 & 2, & Fray for the Turbo could be translated!

It would be cool. But I think they are just planning on releasing the MSX2 set of Xak series games for now, including the MSX2 Fray. I doubt their considering Turbo at this point, although they should as it would be an extra sale towards Fray fans and would take no time at all to translate if they do the original Fray. Perhaps by popular demand and requesting this of them would make something like this happen down the road.
As for the really rare Game Gear version, it is extremely hard to find and only one rom format of the game exists to my knowledge, however it is for private use by the original Japanese guy who ripped it using a Game Gear cartridge adapter he made. I bought the cart of Fray Game Gear off of Japanese auction awhile back and was planning on making a personal rom for myself as well since I don't own a Game Gear system, but I've had absolutely no luck with figuring out the process in how it is done.

Holy crap! You found a Game Gear version!? Kudos to you! That's awesome, I was doubting it existed, because there's so little evidence of it!

Yeah I had found an order site before. I think someone linked me to it awhile back, but it was an extremely pricey venture at about $120. Instead of doing that I finally found it off of Yahoo Japan and used a middleman service to acquire it. In total I think I got it for around $50. I just hope it won't prove to be all for not as I'm anxiously anticipating the idea of ripping it into rom format to play it with brighter colors on either the PC or Xbox GameGear emulators. The Game Gear unit itself is quite poor at displaying the game's graphics and resolution. -SkyeWelse

Well, either way that is cool, because I just wasn't sure it even existed.

Ah wow! That's the entire box set of it. Mine was just a loose cart. Man I wish I had the money to re-invest in this thing so I could see if the manual has anything interesting in it. <== That line right there defines true geekdom. : ) -SkyeWelse

Fray was a rip-off of Legend of Valkyrie, but as I love that game.. Fray is pretty good too. I think I tried the Xak game on the PC-Engine that was translated but didn't really get into it.

I was getting ready to correct you in that Fray came out in 1990 for the MSX and PC9801 which was pretty early before the PC-Engine version of Legend of Valkyrie, but apparently the original Valkyrie series game came out in 1986... so I stand corrected and I guess you might be right about Fray being a clone of that afterall. The two games are extremely similar in concept and gameplay. I had no idea that the Valkyrie series was as expansive in terms of titles and cameo appearances until I saw the classic gaming article on it.
But yeah I really enjoyed the one I played for PC-Engine. I think I remember seeing a PS2 remake out there as well. As for Xak III, to be honest while it does have a solid storyline in the end it isn't my favorite of the series. I tend to like Xak I and II a bit more as well as the story of Fray.

Well.. the NES Valkyrie is not so much like what I was referring to, but the arcade version came out in 1989.. which is the game similar to Fray, and also what the PC-Engine Valkyrie is based on. There was a remake/new game on the PS1 for Namco Anthology (1 or 2, I can't remember) which is pretty neat.. and it's the only reason to own EITHER of those discs.
Valkyrie is a popular character despite only having three games. But, that seems to be a running theme with a lot of Namco's classic arcade characters.. they love to cameo (which I'm a total sucker for).
