Finally, after hours and hours of analysis and trials today, I found a better Status Build for Legend of Mana than the one proposed in its very Ultimania guide. (The option 1, as they put it in the guide.) Not counting the countless days I had previously spent, ages back, figuring builds and status increase behaviour by myself... Without that past experience and my own notes and notations from back then, and a calculator, I wouldn't have been able to figure it out. @_@ Anyway... Now I'm satisfied. XD I'm so going crazy on LoM. ... *finishes colleges work first* I wonder if there are other LoM freaks/enthusiasts here in ALoY, too. If so, I'd gladly share the status build I found out and its formula.

Alrighty. First, here're Ultimania's suggestions: What I did was to improve "Option 1" (where "POWER" was raised from 98 to 99). The formula is identical, except for one level: I'm personally settled on that one. Although I also do find Option 2 interesting. To understand better how the whole thing works, I recommend checking the only FAQ on GameFAQs that talks about raising Status. It's how I got started.

Also, not sure if it'd interest you, but in Option 2, you can sacrifice a point in POWER for a point in DEFENSE if you get 35 Hammer levels instead of 36, then instead get a 1hSword/1hAxe/2hAxe level.
Also, before I stumbled on Ultimania's suggestions, I used to have another build I was focusing on. Its focus was to have POWER, SKILL and DEFENSE at 99, while raising everything else as much as possible. Seeking that, I had made two other builds (I think Improved Option 1 is better than them, though.)
On the first one, in comparison to Improved Option 1, you have one more DEFENSE and HP points, but you lose 3 MAGIC and CHARM points. On the second one, in comparison to Improved Option 1, you have one more DEFENSE and HP points, and 3 more SPIRIT points, but you lose 7 MAGIC points and 4 CHARM points.
Back then, having to choose between these two, I picked the first.

This is the FAQ in question by the way: www.gamefaqs.com/ps/256525-legend-of-mana/faqs/18949Just watch out how near the end the author made a typo on a certain status (I know it's a typo because he wrote it correctly in the same FAQ in some other part). This part: --------------------------------------------------------- | Stat | Pwr | Skl | Dfn | Mgc | Hp! | Spt | Chm | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Swords | 100 | 100 | 100 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 75 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | 2H Swords | 125 | 100 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 75 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Knifes | 75 | 125 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 100 | 100 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Axes | 100 | 75 | 100 | 75 | 75 | 100 | 50 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | 2H Axes | 125 | 125 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 50 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Staves | 50 | 75 | 75 | 125 | 50 | 75 | 125 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Bows | 50 | 175 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 100 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Spears | 75 | 125 | 100 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 100 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Flails | 75 | 125 | 50 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 125 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Hammers | 175 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 75 | 75 | 75 | |-------------|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----| | Gloves | 125 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 75 | 75 | 75 | --------------------------------------------------------- (I'm sure ProBoards will screw that chart over.) The Gloves' status are 125 | 75 | 75 | 50 | 100 | 75 | 75 .

Hah, that's pretty cool! Maybe sometime I'll come up with something, but I think I'll use your modified Option 1.

Hmmm. Y'know, I've been wanting to play LoM for a while now (like, since High School), but I've heard it is nothing but side quests, with no solid overarching story.
What's the validity of this? (side quests are fun, but I like a filling main course with my appetizers)

Have you played Dark Cloud? Think of it somewhat like that; it's like a side-scrolling beat-em-up RPG with towns. It's highly customizable -- allowing you to basically choose your lot of land, and place areas where you see fit. Those areas become either towns or quest areas. My explanation doesn't even begin to scratch the surface, but it gives you a rough idea.

Haven't played Dark Cloud. It really didn't appeal to me, despite all the praise it garnered. LoM appealed to me simply by virtue of being a Mana (and the gameplay, etc.), but my overall interest ultimately lies on whether or not there's a contiguous story.
If there's no ongoing plot to keep my interest in something, I never fail to lose interest. And if I'm going to stop playing something before completion, there's no point in even starting.

Well, the world in the game is certainly lively, so yeah -- it's like you're playing a series of side-quests. The main character really doesn't have much development, but the side characters have a little. You probably won't like it too much, but even though *I* usually hate games with little plot or open-ended main characters (Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, etc.) I actually love LoM!

There's indeed a lot to admire in LoM. As Unsavory said, the world is very "open", too. However, there are still many quests which are "tied", and together, they make a Saga, or as most call it, an Arc. There are 3 main Arcs in total, and they tell really incredible stories each. There are other really nice side-quests and "mini-arcs", as well. The game, though, does have a "final quest", which has to be eventually done to finish it. How customizable LoM is is one of its most impressive and addictive features though. You can capture monster eggs and raise the monsters that come inside the eggs, as well. They can level up with you, and fight with you. Even THEIR statuses are "customizable" as well as their behaviour, accordingly to what they are fed, when and in what order. You can craft AND temper your own items as well (IIRC, tempering was only for weapons?). It can be REALLY complex if you ever wish to "go pro" into it. If you do it RIGHT, it's VERY rewarding (but equally challenging!). Magic in the game are contained within "instruments". It is possible to craft those, as well, and use their magic by equipping them. You also can grow fruits and food (produce). They are used mainly for feeding your monsters. It's possible to create Golems as well, using as resource equipment, including the ones you made if you so desire. This can also prove to be complex, but AFAIK it's not all that rewarding. Though it's interesting nonetheless. Also, this game definitely screams "Mana" all over it, however it IS indeed very different from its predecessors (Seiken 1~3). You need to play it not expecting "Seiken Densetsu 4", but rather... "Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana". People who disliked the game, for their majority, were expecting "Seiken Densetsu 4", and I used to be among those people. Only at first. Now it's one of my favourite games of all time. Now, whether you'll like it or not, I can't promise anything. The only way to know for sure is by possibly trying it and beating it.

Oh, also if you happen to know someone you could play games with, LoM is THE game. You can bring your friend's character over to YOUR save file, and vice versa. Both can level up like so, via co-op. You both can duel, as well. You can also sell your equipment to them. It makes the experience REALLY fun. However, it's not needed at all to enjoy LoM thoroughly.
