I don't know about you guys but I still think Ys I & II Complete by far is still the best Ys games. It has the best storyline and gameplay in my opinion. There is so much adventure in these games. The other games are fun but the stories aren't as great as Ancient Ys Vanished.

Ys 5. Excellent level design, excellent grafficks (for SFC), excellent music (my favorite in the series). But most importantly - there's nowhere near as much grinding involved as in all the other Ys games. Rules!
The only downside is that the conrols are a little awkward. Jumping between platforms for example is rather tricky. Entirely because of the controls.

Ys I & II Complete are my favourite so far.
I've played them, Felghana, Origins and Napishtim

Ya, this is a toughy but I'll go with Ys I and II for the Turbo CD mainly because it was the first RPG I ever played and first CDROM game I ever played back in 90 or 91. Even though Ys I and II has an absolute fantastic soundtrack, I give the nod to Ys III or Ys OIF to having the best music in the series. OIF is the best of the modern Ys games.

Challenge-wise, Oath in Felghana. To me, that game defined what the perfect remake should be. Challenging and fun. Got me addicted to it for months. Ys I Eternal comes close second.
Gameplay-wise, Ys II: Complete. It is the game that made me fall in love with the series. Although the main game only takes few hours and is significantly easier than Ys I, this game has charms that make you go on. The ability to talk to monsters, each monster's unique name, gifts/fireballs to people, and etc. It would be so nice if Falcom incorporates some of these extra bonuses into new Ys games. Truly rewarding gaming experience.

Best Ys game, i would go with YSF, the music was really great, the gameplay is solid, and the story is okay

While my personal favorite is Ys Origin, I will say that Oath in Felghana earns the title of overall 'best'. They took one of the dodgier games in the old Ys catalog and gave it an amazing overhaul from top to bottom-- and they refined their new game engine, working out some of the clunky kinks that Napishtim had. And of course the massive improvements to characters, music, and so on only helped.

Oath in Felghana of the post year 2000 series, and Ys Book I&II (PC-Engine) in the before 2000 era. in other words, for me, it's a tie between those two.
although Origin was nice with the new multiple characters and the prequel story and the PC Eternal games are great, those two stand together at the top of my list.

Have to say it - Origin.
I'm somewhat biased because unlike quite a few people here I never grew up with the series, and Mask of the Sun was my first Ys game for some reason, followed by Felghana, followed by Origin. Origin had basically everything I loved about Felghana (awesome soundtrack, challenging bosses and simple yet extremely enjoyable gameplay), made the bosses even more enjoyable and challenging and added a much better story (and I haven't even done Claw's route yet, so it can only get better from here on).
(and yes, that does mean I still haven't got past Vagullion on 1 Complete, played 2 at all, or got any substantial distance into 5. You may commence throwing stones and sharp objects.)

Ys I & II PCE/Turbo CD is my most favorite game of all time, ever since I first played it long ago. I love Origin, but the best for me is either Oath in Felghana or Dawn of Ys.

Still haven't played Origin, V, or IV MotS (I've gotten through Ys I and II Complete, YsF, Ys IV DoY, and YsVI), but Ys I & II complete and YsF were the best of those. I love the gameplay of Ys I & II, and the more modern action RPG style of YsF.

So far I've played through Ys I NES, Ys II NES, Ys III SNES, Ys IV MotS, Ys IV DoY, Ys Book I & II, Ys III TGX, Ys VI PS2, and half of Ys Complete.
As of now, It's Ys Book I & II for me. I haven't completed Ys Complete yet, but I think the music would put it a bit under the original. If it had Deuce's hack for the Ryo Yonemitsu music built in, there'd still be the matter of playing through Ys II Complete, but then I'd probably end up choosing it over Ys Book. Then there's YsF...

As of now, It's Ys Book I & II for me. May I ask why? Because you enjoy the broken gameplay?
