Boss battles, are they not a core of the gaming experience? Well all the armor and weapons come out, when all those healing items you've been scrimping and saving for the whole game finally get used, and when all those levels really become useful.
Nowthen, thoughout the whole spectrum of Ys gaming, what do you, yes you, think the best boss battle of the series is? And why do you think this?
For me, it's all about the duel with Ernst in Ys VI. Firstly, it's a duel style fight, rather than a large boss monster. And those, to my mind, are glorious. Not only that, he more or less fights you like you fight him; sword combos punctuated by spells. Sure, he has back-up, but who wouldn't want back-up while fighting Adol "Woodchipper" Christin?. Not only that, but Ernst's battle theme is a very moving theme indeed. A remix of Dark Fact's theme, if my ears do not decieve me. There's also the whole joy of countering a hardcore artifact-level weapon by virtue of skill and personal ability, always a fun thing. Also, I have to admit, I like Ernst's general character design. But I like naval-style designs in general.
And there you have it, one fanboy's gushing. Now, how about you? What battle is your favorite, and why?

I like the boss battles in Ys because they are different.
You said:
This is not entirely true in Ys (1, 2 and 4). Why? The rings have no effect whatsoever -- and on top of it all -- you can't use items.
You can only rely on your sword, shield armor and your level. Everything else is useless (except in Ys 2 and 4 where you get to use either one herb or one roda seed).

Right now, it's the last time you fight Dularn in Ys: The Oath in Felghana. It has been a long time since I felt my gaming skills were really put to the test like that. It is such a challenging battle, I died several times trying to win that one. The fight with Garland (Ys Oath again!) is a close second, I thought the monitor was gonna blow during that fight.

For me, its every encounterment with Legion from the Castlevania series. There's just something undeniably cool about a huge floating ball of dead bodies.

The Halberd guy maybe? So far, the most interesting fight for me was the second Boss in Ys VI (forgot his name). The flying crab guy. I uhh.. hadn't leveled up my sword yet and... Well... Let's just say it makes for a very tough fight without the charge-up whirlwind attack. Going back through, after I put in the cheat codes to see the anime, its MUCH easier the second time around. Heh. I stopped counting how many fights with him I had after 15 to beat him. I r smahrt.

Seldane does make a good point, Ys is mean about cutting one off from one's resources.
I rather enjoy that, myself. I admit, it seemed a tad much in Ys I when I could break out my much needed herb against Ascallion. Ys II Complete had a nice balance in that regard, use what you came in with. It is noteworthy that some of the accessories also work in Ys II's boss battles; I know I needed my Falcon Statue for Dalles' right hand woman, whose name I don't recall.
Given my limited experience, Ys VI does seem to have some of the more dramatic fights. The one against Jue's Summoned Beast (See how neatly I side-step not knowing its name!) is a good one. The battle I mentioned is still the best, to my opinionated little mind. There's some other goodies too, which I'll not get too much into for Markus' sake.
Also, I really need to play Oath of Felghana one of these days, I imagine that the fights in that must be a real treat.
Also: Galbadian/Demonicus was a fun one too, on SNES. Took some time and patience to wear him down, couldn't just dash in with the slashing.

LOL... btw did u find the one in Curse of Darkness? Its an optional boss... seriously hideous though! and equally difficult... I still havent beat it! I thought I'd come back to it once I found everything else there was to find, but I never did... Now, back to Ys... I dont realy know which of my battles are my favorite. Some are extreamly difficult while some are the total opposite... but either way they are all always fun as they're almost always well designed, the enemies are always cool, and the music and artwork add just so much to the experiance alone. Seriously... I cant realy think of a favorite but I might lean towards any of the Dawn of Ys battles where you fight to track The Great Ordeal. Its my favorite boss battle theme of all time, and on top of that all the battles were pretty exciting and very fun. I've come to notice how for many other games out there, all the boss battle music ends up noisy and repetitive. Im realy happy that Ys doesnt follow suit and realy has some of the most memorable music ever, even during boss fights.

Also: Galbadian/Demonicus was a fun one too, on SNES. Took some time and patience to wear him down, couldn't just dash in with the slashing. You're gonna love Oath then... My current favorites are the duels against Chester from the same game. Like the fights against Geis and Ernst in VI, these really feel like duels against fellow swordsmen (if Falcom ever remakes any version of IV in house, it would rock to have a similar duel with Guruda) and were one of the most enjoyable additions to the Ys III experience.

Oh man. I so very very very much want a piece of Chester. =D
Anyone have screenshots of that?

I don't have any screenshots yet, but I am slowly replaying the game. I'll be there soon. They wouldn't do those Chester battles justice, you have to experience them firsthand. Maybe if someone has a video of it. I almost named the latter Chester battle from Ys: The Oath in Felghana myself as one of my favorites.
I also would LOVE to see a duel style battle between Adol & Guruda now that you mention it yotaka.

From what I have seen, a real duel with Guruda would indeed be the win, and perhaps the bee's knees and the hobo's delight as well.

Oh man. Chester flinging daggers. That is totally sweet and makes me doubt portions of my self identity.

Hehehe. ^_^ Was that not awesome? I'll hafta snag more screenshots when I duel him next, as I'm sure it'll be even flashier. Seriously though, the fight is SO much better in full motion. If I knew a way to record a video of the gameplay, I would... ...Oh yeah, my favorite boss fight? Hmm... well, the fight with Gildias in the Icebound Cave in YsF was.... ;; Painful... but amazing to see. And boy, did I get to see it a LOT. ^^;;;;; Last side note? Valestein Castle makes me cry. Out of fear or out of joy, I'm honestly not sure right now.
