I found Ys Strategy on Ebay. The auction features some info about the game as well as some neat screenshots. The game actually looks pretty good. Not too expensive either.

meh, I wish they could have used Ys creatures instead of the standard dragons, griffons and stuff. all the shots i see other then the title and package still seem to have nothing to do with Ys. i would love to see some galabans and other various Ys creatures running amuck.

Well I've been playing it off and on since I really haven't much of an idea as to how to play it since I only understand a very small amount of Japanese. It seems to be an interesting game, if I could just get the hang of it. I mean just playing the quick scenario map against the computer I had each of my three soldiers attack random animals around the perimeter to secure food for more troops only to have 2 of them die from fighting against bears and the other die somehow after killing a farm chicken. Like I said, I don't have much of a clue as to how to play this game. lol
What I can say is that you start out playing as Abel Renford, a swordsman who has apparently lost his memory. He does look quite a bit like Adol and it is speculated that perhaps he is an ancestor of Adol. As Renford makes his way up to the Kingdom of Esteria it is attacked by an army led by a man wearing a mask that appears to look like that of a dragon or lizard of some kind. The King of Esteria gives something of importance to Leone, the blue haired queen of Esteria and Abel assists the Esterian army in defeating the attackers. Only I haven't won that battle... sigh.
At any rate, it seems to be a neat game so far with fairly large maps and a decent amount of troops to command at your disposal and everything is of course is real time strategy.

Nice report, and thanks for sharing it, we have all been wondering about this game for some time now.

Wow, thanks for that information. Now I know I definitely shouldn't bother getting a DS for this. Sounds interesting story-wise though. I hope it will be released in NA someday.

NP. I would surely try to play it a bit more seriously if there were at least a translation available, but as for now it seems to be a bit too difficult to play for a non-Japanese speaking player. It was worth checking it out though to see what it was. The music is fairly well done and reminiscent of some of the earlier Ys' themes with a bit of an epic battle strategy sound to it. Think of Ys music meeting Suikoden war battle themes. Hopefully they will decide to bring it over to America, but who knows what will happen. America is a bit odd when it comes to releasing games. We still haven't recieved OZ or Berserk PS2.

Im not caring for it as much anymore... after GDC, it seems chances of getting to play it in english are extreamly slim to none. I highly doubt an NA announcement will happen at E3. Im also disapointed that from everything ive read about the gameplay, theres no throwbacks to any classic Ys gameplay. I was hoping that even though its an RTS, there'd be some familiar Ys-ish gameplay elements. I mean, is it atleast fast-paced when battling? or is it all about sending troops here and there? I also didnt know that it was totally developed by Marvelous Interactive, i thought it was just being published by them. Perhapse its good in its own way, if you can understand it, but its sad that they went all out and completely took away nearly everything about Ys other than some story elements. It looks like they could have done more to make it distinguished from other japanese RTS. It seems i'd be happier trying out Fire Emblem instead...

I mean, is it atleast fast-paced when battling? or is it all about sending troops here and there? It is a slow progression of troops heading out to the area or targets you assign them as they stand in position hacking away at something over a period of time like most RTS. -SkyeWelse

I remember MP83 came up with the name "Ys Tragedy." Is that what we're seeing here?

Marvelous is an International company. I also read somewhere that they intended to release it in North America. I guess only E3 will tell.

I'm looking forward to Hardcore Gaming 101's article to help determine whether I should ditch Adol for this... crap, what's his name? Oh, Abel.

You're hardly the first person I expected to hear that from. :P But I'm relieved to hear that it didn't turn out as bad as everyone was speculating. Now if only I had a DS...

I tried this game out briefly yesterday.
It had a somewhat cool intro movie which impressed me by running at 60fps (I think it was 60 atleast), it had some problems with MPEG artifacts but it was still very nice for being on the DS.
The game seemed to move really slow, and I won the first battle without really doing anything. The scrolling was choppy and I don't like the graphics.
So my word of choice after playing the game for about 10 minutes would be: naah. But if you're into these kinda games and can live with the choppy scrolling it might not be all that bad.
The little music I heard was kinda nice and sounded like First Step towards War remade into a new song.

Of course not. Did anyone ever have any expectations? Oh, and it is a Marvelous game. Can't stress that enough. Marvelous are the TH*Q of the 21st century.
