I think the best thing about Ys Strategy is the soundtrack. It is really good, and I was surprised after hearing it. I don't play a lot of RTS games, and I think the last one I played before Ys Strategy was Gemfire. The closest I come to RTS games are tactical RPGs, which I enjoy a lot more. I didn't like Ys Strategy when I first played it, so I've stayed away from it. I would like to finish it one day, but it looks bad and I'm not inspired to play it.

Why don't you try and play Ys Strategy? I'm 99,99% sure that you won't like it. I don't know anyone who does. I'd like to clarify that my review-rant was not in defense of Ys Strategy I wouldn't have touched the game anyway as I'm not a fan of RTS, or DS games in general (apart from Phoenix Wright 1-3, though those are gba ports).

Hmm....I on the other hand, am a very avid fan of RTS and general RPG fantasy/strategy games. Langrisser, Disgaea, Disciples, Age of Wonders, Dawn of War...the list goes on. These days I just don't have the energy to do 50-hit combos in fighting games or become skilled at overly difficult action games.
Maybe Ys Strategy is a good fit for someone like me, and if the music's good, I'll probably like the game (it's what got me into my first Ys game).
And Sardien mentioned following game companies for buying their games. In retrospect, that is exactly what I do. I follow Atlus/NIS, Konami, and occasionally Capcom. I'd follow Falcom if they'd actually localize more games in North America. Everything else, I have to rely on reviews, gut instict or word-of-mouth.
I'm very skeptical of Square/Enix now however...most of their games tend to be hyped by their overzealous fans. Don't get me wrong, I loved FFVI & FFVIII (and Sephiroth in FFVII), but I couldn't stand FFX. Beyond Square's main franchise, I truthfully think their games are just a little better than average (though Square fans always give them a +20% rating).
So, yeah....what was the topic again?

Ys Stategy was not developed by Falcom. It was developed by FUTURE CREATES. You like them, don't you?

Good music, absolutely lousy gameplay and a story that could have gone somewhere if Falcom had done it but just goes nowhere. I have two regrets related to the game. One is that I actually paid a good chunk of money for it and the other is that I didn't save a copy of the reasonably nifty equipment list or map from the Risk-esque online game that used to be on the official website. Said Risk clone was a much better game than the actual product we wound up with.

Aha.
Now I know why Rising Star Games decided to release such a definite flop as Ys Strategy in Europe.
Rising Star Games IS Marvelous Entertainment. They were founded by Marvelous themselves, to publish their games in Europe, because nobody else wanted to.
So, they're "forced" to localize whatever junk Marvelous throws at them. Including Ys Strategy.
I feel sad for the people who work there. Such a worthless job...

But... but... New Zealand Story Revolution... was KICK ASS! X)
I also have friends from Rising Star, they seem to enjoy what they do; in spite of some tripe, they do have gems which get overlooked due to their company's reputation, and that makes me sad.
