what do you all think about the DS game Ys Strategy? well in my opinion by what ive played and seen of the game its not bad, sure it many not be a true Ys game but its not bad for a spinoff of the series, never got play much of it yet though but by what ive played its not bad but it really could have been ALOT better like a fire emblem type instead of similar type to age of empires.

I've tried it for a little while. It was really boring, really slow. Didn't feel like a real game at all, more like a very very early beta or alpha version of something.
Most people here probably haven't even tried it.

I'm still amazed that Rising Star had the guts to localize this game. It was a truly foolish decision. It was bound to fail. And of course, it did. MASSIVE loss of money, for sure. Had they released it as a budget release, it might have sold better. But instead, it was full priced. I was shocked to see it in stores here for 50€!!!! That's a TON of money for a DS game, and especially for such a bad one. Edit: The stores were quick to lower the price on it though, because of the loss of sales. It can be had for very low prices now. But still, nobody wants to buy it.

Actually I've tried it! Oddly enough I got it on a flashcart I bought (game shop guy's selction of 'must-play' games??). It wasn't that bad really but not gripping enough for me to put all aside and start playing. It seemed a bit too slow and... blah? I do plan to get to it someday though, since I tend to like most strategy games. I think it was the presence of Abel that err-ed me off the most though. First reaction being, where's Adol?! That and a highly Dynasty Warriors-like opening sequence (followed by a slow, slow, sloooow 'let's make Abel walk!' tutorial).

yea when i seen that his name was abel i was like what happend to adol! as for the game itsself well it could have been better if they worked on it more and made it faster paced, its way to slow of a game especially for DS standards, but i agree with you on the Abel/Adol part it ws a really shock ^^"

In my opinion, Rising Star should've called it quits after New Zealand Story Revolution. Neat game to localize, but then they ended up localizing a lot of trash. Infact, that's the only game with "Revolution" tacked onto its title that ever really had any bit of justice done to it!

I was about to jump for joy reading they were localizing a new Ys game. I actually was excited seeing it was an RTS game, being a fan of RTS PC games like Warcraft and 40k Dawn of War series. But after seeing the posts here...
Is it really THAT bad? If it at least reaches a 7 on the IGN review score, I'd give it a chance.

It got 2/10 in a Swedish video game magazine. I haven't seen any other reviews of it, but I'm sure there are other reviews in various European magazines, and I'm sure they gave it similiar scores.

Masochistic curiosity got the better of me, so I've read review after review of Ys Strategy.
It looks terrible, like I'd be torturing myself playing it. It looks like one of those games Angry Video Game Nerd would review. There are NO positive reviews of this game. The only thing apparently appealing now is the box cover art.
It's kind of a shame, amazon.uk sells the game at a cheapo price. I wish Falcom would just give an Oath of Felghana treatment to all the Ys remakes and release it on PS2...maybe then someone will have the guts to localize it to North America.

Sort of, I use them just to get a jist of the game quality. If IGN rates a game like a 5, it's a pretty good bet the game's gonna sucks (for example, I was gonna get Tenchu DS until I saw the rating).
But sometimes I ignore low scores and take risks (Silent Hill 2, one of my favorite games of all time, was rated poorly on its release). I might do the same with Baroque for Wii, despite it's mediocre review.

But if a person who is a fan of jrpgs reviews a game (a jrpg), they will always give it top scores, even though it may be crap! Never trust fans of stuff, they are always wrong, about everything!

The problem with going by review scores from IGN - or from any gaming review site, for that matter - is that you can't guarantee the person playing the game was actually in the game's target audience. This is why if people go by scores and ratings, they should use Gamerankings or Metacritic where you get the AVERAGE of all critics from mags and sites. I usually look to see what "professional" reviewers and then check out the ratings given by players and then base a decision on that. Of course, there are exceptions *cough* Chaos Legion *cough* OZ/The Sword of Etheria *cough* Every Dynasty Warriors game created *cough* where I'd go and purchase a game before or even with abysmal scores. :P Well, hack and slash games typically get crap scores anyway but I like 'em so screw all you non-fans! Oh, reviewers being objective and giving thorough reviews (like pointing out both pros and cons) generally help too. Heck, even the summaries are enough at times. Just a number and nothing to back it up sort of means nothing to me.

No, if a person who enjoys JRPGs reviews a *good* JRPG, they'll be likely to give it a high score. If a person who enjoys JRPGs reviews a *bad* JRPG, they'll be likely to give it a LOW score. I like JRPGs, but trust me, there are some that I would give failing marks to without a second thought! I think Some dood may have been exercising his silly non-seriousness here!

Personally? I think the answer is to know your reviewer. See, I'd want a fan of JRPGs reviewing such, because I too am a fan. So yeah, know your reviewer and pick wisely =[

I don't buy anything based on reviews, especially professional ones. Reviews can be good only for general information about a game, but there's no one with the exact tastes you've got. You can only truly judge a game by playing it yourself. I buy games from franchises or developers I trust, or am interested in. If I'm truly unsure I find some other means to play the game and then buy it, if the game fits my definition of fun. So yeah, my shelves are filled with fun only
