The opening AVI won't play and the game keeps flickering when I get to the begining after hitting esc to pass the video.
I have a HP laptop and I have no idea how to fix this X.X
I wanna experience the game *flails*

Isn't there an option in the config to turn off the opening movie? Most of Falcom's other games have an option along those lines, so I imagine Ys I & II must as well... EDIT: Confirmed! Load up the Ys I Complete config utility, and un-check the box marked "enable all AVI movies." That should allow you to play the game without it even trying to play the intro FMV. -Tom Regardless the game still flickers oddly... I wish I could take a video of it. I doubt it's a game effect. Does it have compatibility issues with some graphics cards? Or perhaps I need to change some settings... It's all so annoying lol, but well worth it I'm sure.

Upgrading to XP is, of course, the solution. There might be other things to do, though. But I doubt it.
Nvidia or ATI?

"Upgrade" to Xp from Vista huh. I guess some people here do hate Vista.
Anyway this problem has been brought up in Falcom's own support section. It has something to do with the Indeo 5 codec that Vista no longer uses. Thus older games like Ys 1 that has opening movies encoded in Indeo are not working in Vista.
The workaround for this is to right click the exe files of the games, go to Properties then the compatibility tab, click on the "Run as administrator" as well as "run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2)"
Then you should be able to play the game in Vista now. That's what I do for all my pre Vista games and I'm using Vista. No problems here.
Worse come to worst, you're gonna have to work a little harder by either Downgrading to Xp or create a new primary partition and install XP separately for dual-booting. That's what I did, though I realized I haven't been booting to XP ever since I used Vista.

Does anybody like Vista? It really is a terrible operating system, in every way. There's absolutely no sane reason to use it.

Definitely. o.o I never saw someone who actually likes it.
Also many people unfortunatelly confuse "new" with "good", these don't always walk together. Like Vista's case.
Even my IT teachers at college say that OS is "pure shit". And you can't argue with those guys at all. xD And it IS pure crap. Seriously. 'o.o

Well, I'm not saying that I like it. I'm absolutely a Microsoft hater. Neither do I like apple. But I find no reason to really hate Vista. Sure, it's not as user friendly as XP is now, but was XP all that great when it first came out? I remember a similar scenerio where people were cursing and swearing at it while they were still using Win98 and 2000.
But I guess since I'm comfortable with tweaking my programs, making Vista work for me isn't so much of a problem. I suppose since most home consumers expect their products to work out of the box, I don't blame them for cussing at Vista.
But what I don't understand is why people are hating it just for the sake of hating. All I keep hearing is, "it sucks", "shit os" etc. But no one really gives reasons as to why... sheesh. Come on, if you want to diss something, give some solid reasons first. All I keep hearing is a repetition of what others say. Makes me wonder if any of you actually used it in the first place or just spreading what others say.
And remember, I don't like Vista, but as long it works for me, I've got nothing to say against it.

It isn't compatible with "anything". For every software (including games) they are making a "Vista version". =/ That's where it all starts.
The way it is structured is poor as well (poorer than XP and many of the predecessors), regarding system performance and other things. Or something like that. I gotta check my "Diagnostic & Problem Solutions in Information Technology" notebook (the real paper-made thing). You will run into many Vista exclusive problems too, besides software inconpatibility.
Note though: I'm still a newbie in IT. But I can surely re-ask my teacher in August why this system sucks. I'll note it down this time though, and put it here shortly thereafter. Because for God's sake, many people here seem to be so persistent about using Vista 'cuz it's new! @_@
Anyway, wait until... say, August 12th or something. I'll be back. xD *prays to remember to return*
