I havent played a Ys game myself. However one of his other songs is titled Temple of Sun. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaJA-jgLqMoInstead I made a search for the song Temple of the Sun and bingo it was a Ys song. So am thinking the same for this Mask of Sun song too.

Do you know how the guitar player got that backing track then? I dont think he made it himself as it sounds professional done.

Probably a MIDI file played back on a high tech synthesizer.

Excellent I managed to locate the backing track.
Do you guys know if its possible to extract the music files from a .smc file. i.e. From a ROM?

Anyone know what the name of the Ys I (Famicom ) Mountain theme is? IIRC, it only plays in the mountain area above Zepic Village, outside the Shrine, Darm Tower, Thieves' HQ, etc. Most other versions of the game only play First Step Towards War there, but I recall the NES version having a different song. And I rather remember liking it.

Tis' a great theme, I don't know the name of it either... but it reminds me of Castlevania for some reason. Atsushi Fukai has a decent remix of it too -- I'll post it at a later date when I can find it.

I haven't played the NES version in ages, but then, I was pretty sure that I had never encountered it before. I don't think I've encountered it since.
Let me pop the game on and check it out...

It's a famicom version exclusive track, which plays between Zepic/Zeptic Village and the Shrine.

Yeah, I'm listening to it now for the first time in years. It's rather short, but pretty awesome. And yeah, it is vaguely Castlevania-ish. It seems like the NES version also has a new song for Zepic Villate, now that I listen to it. If the game didn't run so slow, I'd be tempted to run through all of it (and Ys II) to hear if there are any other exclusive songs.

I think those are the only exclusive tracks. That, and the NES version increases the pitch of the Darm Tower theme for every level you go up.

That's actually a fairly neat idea, so long as it doesn't go TOO far. It's a theme I've always somewhat enjoyed, but one that always wore itself out WAY before that dungeon ended. Or that song's involvement in that dungeon ended, depending on the version of Ys I being played.
Shame that there aren't any more exclusive tracks. Ys I, at least, was changed around quite a bit for its NES port.

Atsushi Fukai made a nice arrange of the Ys FC song in question, and this is how the track is listed on the CD: If anyone could translate that, then maybe we would at least have something to call that song. That is, as long as it's somewhat of a title and not just a description.

The song is consistently called "Mountain Road".
The X68000 version has two exclusive songs as well. One is "Mountain Road" (not the same as the FC one) and another one is apparently called "Mura" (which is a Zepik Village song). Both were composed by Hiroaki Goto, and they are excellent. The best Ys songs I've heard.
