I have only played Ys for the SMS. And finished it when I was a kid. I began to play again the SMS version on an emulator, but stopped near the end, because it became too hard. I think. So I dropped it for now. Now I wish to play a new Ys game. What do you recommend me to play? I think either a newer version of Ys I or Ys II, but I am not sure which version of it I should play. Also, I need to know how to get a legal copy of those games.
Thank you.

Get YsI/II complete for PC or the Playstation 2 versions if a PC is hard to come by. I would play each Ys game in order, and to your own preference. There are huge opinion differences on which versions are the "definitive" ones to play. They are all pretty much the same, and once you have finished them all, you can enjoy replaying the same title, but on a different console.

You'll to complete the first game before starting on Ys 2. Where in the end are you? I recommend Ys X68000 which is Ys 1, but very good looking and sounding. digitalsloth.net/Ys/library/ys_x68000.phpSome screenshots. Do not scroll too far down! Spoilers! I also recommend Ys 2 for Famicom. It has been fan translated too. It not better than the computer versions, but is still preferrable since it is available in English. If you want to play newer versions of Ys 1 or 2, I recommend the Saturn ones. They have a more modern look, but still feel like the old versions. The reason I'm not recommending any later games is because I feel that the Ys spirit got much weaker by each year/release (and I don't think YsF/YsO feels like Ys at all). And if you've only played the Master System version, I think the new games would ruin your Ys experience a bit. The best thing is to let the spirit gradually get ruined.

Also, I need to know how to get a legal copy of those games. What? Aside from buying the games? :P Well, I THINK Falcom still carries Ys I Complete and Ys II Complete XP editions. Or you can wait till adoru acquires some extra copies to sell. XD There's also the DS version of Ys I and Ys II as well but I know FM-77 will tell you to stay away from them. ^^ Ys I DS: www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-70-2foe.htmlYs II DS: www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-15-Ys+ii-70-2fof.htmlYs I.II Complete: www.himeyashop.com/product_info.php/products_id/2892Other purchase options would be buy and sell and trade gaming sites/forums, eBay or through proxies that can order from Japanese stores or Yahoo! Japan Auctions. You may also want to check the thread in the gaming forum for some links to various stores. Edit: Haha. I like how we all suggested something different. ^^;

Hmm, I own a saturn. Hope it still works and all its valuable parts are somewhere to be found. The problem is, I would prefer to play it in my room, and not at the living room. And to play on the saturn I need a TV. Unless I can connect the saturn to my PC LCD screen somehow? I wonder. I did finish the first Ys game for the SMS when I was a kid. But in the sega emulator, I am a bit after the boss that looks like a rock with an eye, and throw little rocks at you. Could be fun to plug my saturn to my pc LCD screen and play. I think it is possible, but I am not sure. Are the saturn Ys games come also in english?

I'm pretty much the only one who has stated my opinion on the Ys DS games on this forum. You can read about my disgust with them. And then there isn't much more talk about them.
There's a reason for that. Nobody cares about them. Nobody wants to get near them. And nobody wants to play them. Because everybody knows - deep down - that they will hate the games.
And they are right.

Well, it CAN be done, but you'll need extra (very expensive) hardware, and the results will be unsatisfactory. The picture quality will be beyond terrible - especially on an lcd. If your computer is somewhat modern, you can use the SSF emulator. It works fairly well, but I don't know if Ys 1-2 works, I haven't tried them. At least they don't work properly with Cassini (a bad Saturn emulator). And those games are not available in English I'm afraid.

I think I would prefer to play the (fan) english version. Wait, famicom is a publisher? Well, I will continue my research about it tomorrow. But if there is an english version to the PC, I would prefer that.

Well, Ys I.II Complete for PC HAS been fan-translated into English. The issue would be obtaining the legal copy of the game. :P

I think you should play them all, in sequence. For me, Ys I-II Complete for the PC is the definitive version of both games, and has a fan translation. You can buy it directly from Falcom. There is a thread somewhere around here (the "Falcom Special Offer" one, I think) that tells you how you should order it.
Ys III has been released on a number of systems in english. You can play them through emulation. There is some controversy as to what is the best version, Genesis, SNES or PCE-CD. My favorite is the latter (and it also has one of the worst voices I've ever seen in a game), but the three versions are good.
Ys IV, in my opinion, is the worst in the series. There are two very different versions, both with fan translations: for the PCE-CD and for SNES. The latter is considered the cannon version, but I like the other one better.
Ys V is very good, for the SNES, but the translation patch hasn't come out yet.
Ys VI started the new generation of the series and has the engine that's currently in use. I don't agree with FM-77 and I think they still feel very much like Ys games. Actually, for me, they are the best ones. YsVI, however, has only been translated for the PS2, so far.
Oath in Felghana, for the PC, is a remake of Ys III and it's a fantastic game, much better than the original and it has a fan translation.
The last one, so far, Ys Origin is a prequel to the first game and is very good, althought it's a little different in spirit, since it doesn't have any cities and is entirely set in the Tower of Darm. It's still untranslated, thought.

What is it that you don't like about Ys IV?

Oh, and yes, it's ALSO available from Falcom directly. If you need info on how to order games directly from Falcom, let me know. Is there something wrong with the first post of this thread?

Ouch, sending my credit card by email? Isn't that insecure?

It's not falcom that I do not trust. Actually, I am not entirely sure how email phising, or whatever works, but I am pretty sure email is a very unsecured method to deliver data. If it is possible to buy this fan english version through ebay, I would prefer that. If emailing falcom is the only way to purchase it, I will have to think about it(= check what people who understand better than me, about this issue, have to say).

You can't buy any english versions, but you can download them via torrents or whatever.

I'm actually thinking of buying the games including oath in the near future, cause I felt a little bad for Pirating the games. I also would like them for collective reasons , and so that I don't have to download the torrents and wait a couple of weeks to play again if my computer ever @#$%# up. I also would like to purchase the games to support Falcom even though I'm probably never going to play all their games unless I learn Japanese(which this is what its all coming to ) Ebay sounds like your best bet unless some jerk outbids you, which happens to me countless of times. You would be surprised on how many people on the planet have a lot in common with you.

Keep an eye out here too, there are always people offloading there collections. Honestly dont spend tons of cash on a game you have never played. Pick up cheaper versions like the 8 and 16 bit releases. If you like them then spend the money on the newer stuff, because there is no point wasting money (more than I think its worth) on a game you might not even like. Falcom has very nice packaging, detail, and a level of quality they put in their games. Its all really for the fans, so buying it and not being a fan is a waste of money. Every Ys game plays the same at its core, so if you hate one you will hate the rest.

torrents and wait a couple of weeks to play again if my computer ever @#$%# up. Weeks? What kind of tracker are you using? And why would the games disappear just because your computer fucked up? And why would it fuck up in the first place? Ever heard of external media? Or even hard drive partitions? And outbidding someone on Ebay makes you a jerk? There are many questions, but no answers.
