Hello there!
I played Ys I & II in TurboGrafx CD years ago, and now that yahoo games has released them in enhanced form for free, I was wandering if there are any versions of those new Ys I & II or other Ys games for MAC OS or MAC OSX (I am NOT a Windows user, never been, and never will).
Any info? Thanks!

There are no Ys for Mac OS. Never been, and never will. Falcom is Windows only (well, and PSP, as of late). There's Virtual PC though. So if your Mac is powerful enough, you can emulate Windows through it, and then play Ys 1-2 Complete through that. They are not demanding games, so even emulating them shouldn't be too hard on the computer. There are also emulators for older systems like SNES, so you can play those old Ys games on your Mac as well. Or if you have an Intel Mac, there's always... Windows.

You can run Snes 9x on a mac and thus you can play many Ys games that way. I know there are a few NES emulators that work as well. As for the PC games, your better off running bootcamp or just shelling out a few hundred bucks for a shitty pc, so you can run the future releases. Ys pc games take very limited resources to run, so you don't need a super computer.
Another option which has recently come to light is a VC release on the Wii.
Hope this helps, from one mac user to another.
Remember Macs are great, and better computers overall, but they never were tailored for PC gaming unfortunately. I have and enjoy both PC and Mac extensively.

VmWare fusion on intel macs is great, never have to reboot into windows but can still run apps at pretty much full power.

Does Fusion do DirectX okay? Parallels won't even let me play Melty Blood or Touhou games, leading to a great deal of frustration. But for, say, watching Netflix Instant Watch movies, that and TinyXP have been a great pair.

Virtual PC is not a good option. Granted, it's been many years since I tried running Ys Eternal through it, but it did not run well. Unless something's changed, Virtual PC does not use the video card hardware and does not support DirectX so it's pretty useless for games. If you haven an Intel Mac, your best bet is really Boot Camp. That's what I use.
Ys is actually responsible for me getting a PC. I bought a bunch of cheap parts and built myself a PC that could run Ys Eternal and have just upgraded it since. My PC is currently kaput until I get a new video card, but my shiny new Intel iMac has been working nicely.

I'm not in a position to reformat my HD to partition it properly, so boot camp is out of the question at the moment. I'd like to hear about Fusion or Crossover from someone who's used them, though.

Unless I'm remembering wrong, you don't need to reformat your hard drive for Boot Camp. The application will partition it using whatever existing free space you want to assign it, leaving the rest of your hard drive untouched.

Nope, won't let me. I wanted to, and I did it once before in the past, but it had a problem with my drive now. Not sure why and I'm not in a hurry to find out.

VMWare Fusion or Crossover will allow you to pretty much play Ys I & II Eternal in Mac OSX without much difficulty and you can view the intro movies and play some .exe files with Crossover. I've had no problems getting it to work in Leopard, not sure about anything under OS10 though. Also, while VMWare is nice, it's far from perfect and likes to crash at times, especially if you try to grab screenshots or zoom-in and will run your temperature/fan speed up pretty good as well. Playing it on Windows natively is the best solution through and through.

A lot has changed in those years, virtualization can pretty much access any portion of your primary computer including video cards. VmWare2.0 supports games up to directX9.0 Processors now have virtual machine centers on them that allow the programs to directly access memory, processor power, and anything on your motherboard without having to go through the primary OS. Now-a-days running a virtual machine is no different then running an actual PC with the same configuration you give it, plus intel macs have so much power you don't even lose much dedicating a good chunk of it to virtual machines. When I have some time I'll install some of the Ys games and take some screenshots. Edit: Worth restating that everything I'm talking about only applies to Intel Macs, because powerPC procs don't have the virtualization centers built into the chip. Virtual PC is not a good option. Granted, it's been many years since I tried running Ys Eternal through it, but it did not run well. Unless something's changed, Virtual PC does not use the video card hardware and does not support DirectX so it's pretty useless for games. Here's some quick and dirty pics of me running the first couple minutes of Ys Origin in a virtual vista machine. www.darusgrey.org/YS2.tiffwww.darusgrey.org/YS1.tiffThis is on a 2.8ghz 24inch imac. As you notice from YS2.tiff even inside the game I'm getting 200+ FPS...so yeah, a virtual machine is way more than enough to play these games, don't need boot-camp. Edit: Here's Ys1 showing me getting almost 2000FPS in Ys1 Eternal. www.darusgrey.org/YS3.tiffAnyways, as I said, they're extremely playable in virtual machines.
