dod.vgmix.com/current.php Enjoy, guys. (NOTE: If you click this link too late, you'll probably get whatever the new shit is. If that happens, it should be among the most recent submissions if you search the archives. I will update the link when I can.)

Ernst is kick ass! Woo! // It's been a long time since Ys music actually gave me such beautiful chills. You know the feeling. Like ice running down your back, and then up. It gives you shivers... and you wonder how you went so long without listening to such beautiful music.

I'm actually rather disappointed. Maybe it's to be expected in this particular case but I find the fact that 90% of fan remixes contain exceedingly loud and badly mixed guitars extremely boring. Especially when the exact same set up has already been done with the original track or an official mix there off.
That said.. I'm going to give the tracks a couple of more goes to see if I can find something worth keeping.

If you already had these predispositions about fan remixes, then I'm not sure I understand how you could be disappointed by what you already assumed anyway. Actually, I think these remixes are extremely well done. The raw sound that you're complaining about is a side effect of them being done with real instruments (in most cases), and recorded on a personal basis (not in a multi million dollar recording studio that Falcom rented for the week). Actually if you listen, you'll find that there's been a lot of different interpretations in many of the songs. None of this means you have to like it, by any means. Just don't get carried away with the poop slinging.

I've only downloaded the tracks that are remixes from the first two games (seeing those are the only two I've played and I like hearing remixes of material I'm familiar with.)
I must say, they aren't bad. My favorite at this point is probably "Ravaging the Seven Ys". I think the best part of it is that at 1:43, they used the NES exclusive music of outside the temple area music. (though I dunno if this song has been since reused, being as I've not played any other Ys games, you see.
However my thoughts on the songs overall is that they seem to exhibit that stereotypical "fan remixers with guitars" feeling. I love a good guitar as much as the next guy, but a trend I'm noticing especially with remixes is the heavy portrayal of guitars. Personally, I'd rather prefer to hear some other instruments like organs and pianos and whatnot. Even softplucked instruments like harps are appealing to my ears.
I'm not talking bad, I'm just stating it all sounds kinda familiar and done before. Like any opinions tough, take mine with a grain of salt.
I'd like to hear some of the other themes, but I want to play the source material first. I recently came across some translation patches for Ys III and IV, but I have no flippin' idea on how to work with these with the roms. :/

Well... to be honest I also was disappointed, because I've found many Ys remixes in that very site long ago that were much better than what came now...
They're still good though.

Yeah, Dr Rockso has pinned down Dwelling of Duels problem. It tries to shy away from OCRemix's tendency toward techno and synthetic instruments, so you often end up with a lot of generic guitar tracks that don't do anything.
Ima wait a bit til I dive into it, myself.

Pfft, after listening to these Ys tracks, I think I prefer Dwelling of Duels -- and that's coming from a longtime OCRemix listener. That's not to say I'd abandon OCRemix -- they have some solid Ecco 2 GG remixes.

Shit, not like you can't do two things.
For me, OCR has more stuff I'll outright delete and be angry for wasted time. DoD has more stuff I'll find boring, but give another chance before I get rid of it and lament for the wasted time. DoD has a higher tendency to sound the same, on the whole.
Not sure which has the higher percentage of actual good stuff. =|

That's my conundrum on the whole, yet I felt these Ys remixes were everything I wanted. I'd be somewhat surprised if Beyond Oasis doesn't have a few remixes here and there.
OCRemix came close with a few tracks, such as the Sub Castle themes for Super Mario World.
All in all though, it's really a mixed bag. There's roughly only 1/8th of the sites dedicated to good music.

OCR has the Pillars of Salt remix for Xenogears.
That is one of the very, very, VERY few times vocals have been added to a song, and it worked. This alone gives OCR tremendous credibility for for.
Edit: By a fan remixer.

True. Of course, my downloads at DoD have already far exceeded those at OCRemix (which I keep mistakenly calling "OKRemix" -- makes sense though, doesn't it?), I'm having quite a bit of fun with it right now. The only thing I'm struggling with right now, is the server lag, possibly the internet being crappy. Seriously, I wanna listen to music, I've got better things to do than idling.

Also we're forgetting things like Terra in Black, and the IronMic Punch-Out Remix.
And...shit, a buncha good Chrono Trigger remixes. Soap and Water for Megaman 2, shit any of AE's Megaman 2 remixes... Actraiser's Thy Followers is pretty neat.
Shit, I'm go through my list.
Bayou Billy's El Lagarto Alisia Dragoon's Halls of Abandonment Bionic Commando's Advance with Caution Bubble Bobble's Hillbilly Rodeo
...More Castlevania, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross stuff than I wanna name...
Dragon Warrior 3's Flight of Destiny Dragon Warrior's Kingdom Come
...More Final Fantasy Stuff than I want to name. FFI in particular gets a lot of love.
Pretty much all the Guardian Legend remixes. (Red Spiders and Rosenthorne are favorites)
Lufia's Fear and Courage.
Okay I'm tried of naming stuff now. But yeah, OCremix has its share of goodies. Also these days, some DoD things tend to end up on it and vice versa; this always amuses me.
