... What exactly, in words, did you do? ' I'm curious... No need to tell me though, as it seems it would be difficult and long to explain. But if you feel like doing it, I'd be glad. xD

... What exactly, in words, did you do? ' I'm curious... No need to tell me though, as it seems it would be difficult and long to explain. But if you feel like doing it, I'd be glad. xD Well I opened up the drive and carefully studied the drive. After discovering how the ribbon cables were attached and which positions they were in I pulled the PCB back and popped up the two tabs holding the ribbon cables to the PCB. After I got the PCB flipped over, I noticed the ground cable shown lifted off of the ribbon cable pictured looked as it did....I was like . I figured the reason the laser motor and spindle motors were not powering up was because the ground on the ribbon cable was coming off...I was able to pull it comletely of and reposition it were it needed to be! I took some tape and wrapped a little tape around it plugged everything back in exactly how it was and proceeded to plug my cd player into the Turbografx....I loaded up Ranma 1/2 (my only burned disc) and turned on the system...I pushed RUN and BAMMMMM the cd spun and the laser started working...I had a working cd player once again! The tricky part of all of this is the fact that ribbon cables are so VERY sensitve to bends and twists...The fact that the ground ribbon cable (the one I fixed) has to be twisted to fit back into the tab correctly presents a problem. The next issue is the tape does not exactly work so wonderful....Its good enough to get you playing again tho! The ground is almost like "glued down" to the ribbon cable and I am unsure of the substance used to glue it....Im sure there is something "special" made for just doing a repair like this but I dont know for sure. I considered one thing and I might try it (but since its fixed im not sure the more and more you tamper with those ribbon cables the more you take a chance in breaking one or tearing it). My idea is to grab some thermal paste I have laying around (if its still good its fom like 6 years ago when I build my first pc) for putting between cpu chips and heatsinks on computer PCB's and actually using it between the ribbon cable and the ground. The paste does bond (although i believe the paste needs to get hot to bond...My idea was....blowdryer) together AND it helps conduct an even flow of electricty through two circuits! SO it should help the ground work better! Hell if you wanted to squeeze a bit of that between em' and then wrap some tap and just put it together im sure the heat of the system would eventually make the paste cure and bond together! SO I hope this explains things a little better! Goodluck with your adventures if you try this! Anyone needs to ask something just pm or post!

Wow. Thanks for the explanation! Well, I'll be trying this as soon as I get the chance... plus, I think I could use the same trick to fix my Sega Saturn that misteriously broke just recently. Actually I thing I'll screw it in the end, but I have to try.

Wow. Thanks for the explanation! Well, I'll be trying this as soon as I get the chance... plus, I think I could use the same trick to fix my Sega Saturn that misteriously broke just recently. Actually I thing I'll screw it in the end, but I have to try. Well the only peice of advice I can give is be very careful with the ribbon cables! Also when you pull the caps up that the cables sit in be careful cause if you like jerk when you pop em up you could pull the ribbons too! Make sure to see what side the leads are on when you pull them cause they will only workon that side....Secondly the small cap on the small ribbon for the cdplayer is rather strange...It has a hard piece of plastic in the middle of it which is actually used to put it in properly! Put it in all the way then when you push the cap down to lock it in place push on the plastic tab with one finger and then the middle of the edge of the cap with the other finger! This is the second cd drive this has happended to me on...When I was a kid my buddy had on of them and it just stopped working one day too....We couldn't figure out why and I bet it was this...Same symptoms! You may try and take one of my pics and print em off and then go to a mom and pop computer shop or something similar and ask what they would use to glue that down! The fewer times you have to screw with this the better! Oh and dont fear if you DO HAPPEN to mess somthing up....The Sony Discman D-34 laser is the exact model used in the NEC drive your gonna tear apart! You can find those guys on ebay for about $20! I bought one tonight to have a spare cost me $12! Also if you want to find just the laser you can find them searching for Sony KSS-162A..I have read that the KSS-220A (laser only) works too! Good luck to ya!!!!

Wow, you have what it takes to deal with these things. ' I can already foresee smoke coming out from my devices. I'll be extra careful with the ribbon cables, too. Thanks again.

I'm going to take a look at mine, because mine isn't spinning anymore either. Hopefully I will be able to fix it or I will be very sad.
*** Update ***
Took a look at my drive and sure enough, that cable was twisted up pretty bad and the ground ribbon was separated, hmm, I'm going to try electric tape *crosses fingers*. I need a duo

I now have power to the motor, the laser moves up and down (not left to right), but it looks like the laser isn't powering on

My unit has the KSS-220A laser, where can I buy a replacement laser online?
